Couch to 5K - Run 1 done...

I did my first 'run' today. Think I'm going to need help to go all the way to week 9 but determined to do it before I hit the big 50. Anyone else started this week? Fancy a support thread? Couldn't see an active recent one.

Yes, I have to log everything too @resipsa. Basically, if I’m not wearing my Fitbit and I haven’t ticked it off the c25k app, it hasn’t happened. Blush

ChanklyBore · 29/04/2020 15:19

That’s brilliant @resipsa !

That my first goal. Run for 30 mins. Then it’s run 5k. Then run 5k in 30 mins!

Well done you. Brilliant achievement.

I ended up not going for a run yesterday which I’m glad about as my lower legs started twinging a bit late evening, so think I’d been over doing it a little bit, to be fair I’d done 38km of walking or running over the previous few days. Feeling good about heading out later today for w4r2 but it is very wet today.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 29/04/2020 15:22

And yes, congratulations @resipsa!

resipsa · 29/04/2020 15:22

Thanks @ChanklyBore Smile. The husband can't always be relied on to say the right thing but he said 'oh, only 800 metres, that's nothing at all to make up' which made me think 'yeah, not far at all'!

You’d have reached the 5km at about 35.7 minutes at that pace. That’s really good. I don’t think c25k changes based on sex or age, does it? For example, a 30 minute 5km is a much easier goal for a man than a woman, generally speaking, their averages will be a lot faster.

I found this www.healthline.com/health/exercise-fitness/average-5k-time#by-age-and-sex

Says average 5k for my sex and age is 37.21!

JonHammIsMyJamm · 29/04/2020 15:47

Men are generally faster than us because they have bigger lungs and a greater muscle mass (higher muscle to body fat ratio in general too). Plus being taller, on average, they also have longer strides so have to take fewer steps to travel the same distance as us. Younger adults are generally quicker.

C25k is a standardised programme. If you are hitting a 30min 5k at the end of it then you are doing brilliantly!

MintToBee · 29/04/2020 15:54

W3 D1 complete in the rain. It was a tiny bit easier than I thought although the last 3 minute run I gave up at 30 seconds before the end. Didn't need my knee brace either.
And new runners ordered today. Can't wait to get them.

BookShop · 29/04/2020 17:25

W8D1 done. Weird run today. The first 15 minutes felt wobbly and out of sync. The music wasn’t quite right and I was slipping lots. Then it all just clicked into place. I finished but had quite a bit in my reserves so I carried on running. I actually ran for just under 50mins and managed 6.8km in all I was out for an hour with the warm up and cool down but even then I think I could have gone on.

My breathing seems to be OK but it’s my muscles I’ve got to work on. The dog loved his run today. Lots more activity than usual.

Ive ordered an Apple Watch because DH reckons it’ll help with the music playing/alerts rather than my phone in an armband.

Keep at it everyone. It’s worth it.

Baseline2815 · 29/04/2020 17:34

Congrats @respisa!! That's brilliant.

chanklybore I reckon that website is being v generous with the average 5k times! Maybe the average includes some of us still being on the Couch part of couch to 5k. Smile

Did W7R2, tried to vary the route so that I had 2 uphills (one steep) and more flat or slightly down. Was waaaay easier. Grin

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 29/04/2020 17:48

Well done @resipa and @BookShop

Musicalmistress · 29/04/2020 18:02

Fantastic reading all your achievements! I did W2R2 today in new trainers & what a difference.
I'm a big girl (20 stone) so my focus is on keeping moving rather than speed or distance. I am wondering about repeating weeks as I suspect some of the jumps in length of time running might be too much for my legs to cope with!

ChanklyBore · 29/04/2020 18:25

If it’s generous I’m going with it - I like generous Grin

Just back from w4r2 which ended up being 7.31km and taking 1 hr 3 mins because of a road closure. I’d planned out a really good route and was looking forward to it and when I found this massive building site in my way it totally threw me off and I had to take a serious detour through a not great area and on some massively boggy paths. My trainers are caked in mud. Never mind. Tried to keep a reasonably fast walking pace on the extra bits and not overdo it.

Welcome musicalmistress.

quertyuiop100 · 29/04/2020 18:33

I did W2R3 this morning but couldn't compete all 6 runs in full so I will repeat the run again on Friday. I quite enjoyed running in the rain this morning - it certainly cooled me down so I was less beetroot like!

I need new shoes though. I have some real cheapies from a couple of years ago but they are not very well cushioned and my shins ache quite a lot. Ideally I know it would be best to get my gait analysed but that's a bit difficult at the moment. From what I've been reading, I think I need a neutral shoe, so if anyone has some recommendations for some reasonably priced shoes then I'd love to know.

BlahBlahLand · 29/04/2020 18:57

I'm on week 7 and finally beginning to feel like a proper runner, I can actually run and think about something else other than how long I've got left. My new leggings arrived, I'm torn whether to wear them running or as a comfy treat afterwards.

BekindStayhome · 29/04/2020 18:59

Congrats everyone! Just did W3R2 and I was distracted so thought I still had a run to go at the end and still had energy for one. Which makes me. Think I should probably be pushing myself a bit more but I don't want to push too much and fail to finish. I guess you leant how to pace with time?
Querty I got some new trainers when I finished W2 (asics tartherzeal) and they feel comfortable but my shins feel a bit sore today too so not sure I'd recommend.

IGottaGetOuttaThisPlace · 29/04/2020 19:08

Hello, I've been lurking and have been following the programme but repeating weeks etc. So today I did my first 30 minute run but I only did 3.6km.

I feel so slow and ploddy, is it even worth repeating? I think I'd be quicker walking Blush

CeibaTree · 29/04/2020 22:06

I got a pair of Nike Air Zoom Structure 22 trainers when I stared the programme and they are super comfy :)

GuyFawkesDay · 30/04/2020 08:16

M&MDirect often have last season's styles of shoes cheap.

I need stability shoes as pregnancy knackered my arches and I over pronate now. Definitely need some new shoes, mine are 5 years old (seriously, I've started c25k so many times and not made it past week2) and they feel a bit wooden. It's payday so I'm treating myself.

W3R1 done. Stuck in an extra 90 seconds at the end too. Felt great and was not screaming to stop at the end of the longer runs, I felt like I'd got a bit of a groove on. Haven't felt good running for about 15yrs so this is big progress for me.

resipsa · 30/04/2020 09:35

@IGottaGetOuttaThisPlace
Fantastic work! Running for 30 mins is the primary aim so forget the distance and keep at it (like me Smile).

GuyFawkesDay · 30/04/2020 09:51

I can't imagine running 30 minutes yet, you're doing great.

I bought new shoes. I'm eyeing up leggings too

RonBurgundyspanpipe · 30/04/2020 13:28

W5r2 done, I'm getting slower each run but felt great the whole way round. My theory is less speed means I can run for longer. Once I've built the stamina then work on the pace. I'm a complete non-runner though so hope that's logical.

W5r3 looks scary though!!!

HappyLemonSadLemon · 30/04/2020 14:12

Well done @resipsa and @BookShop!!

@IGottaGetOuttaThisPlace - keep going. You will speed up as your body gets fitter and stronger.

So this week, after my mum died I have been so exhausted and wiped out that I haven't been out at all since last Thursday. Back on it again today and I will repeat the whole of week 4 just to get back into the swing of it again.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 30/04/2020 15:30

W3 over. They’re flying by! It felt good this time.

I bought a new sports bra as my old one was suffering the effects of over washing. I’ve gone from a shock absorber run to a Panache and I have to say, it’s much better. More supportive and a better shape, the SA gave me a squashed monoboob but the Panache gives good support without giving me one squashed rectangle of pain. I’m a 32F/FF depending on the bra/manufacturer and I recommend it for small back/big cups if you’re in the market for a new one.

resipsa · 30/04/2020 15:46

@JonHammIsMyJamm
Glad it's working for you. At 32B, the bra is the least exciting bit of my kit!

JonHammIsMyJamm · 30/04/2020 16:01

Grin I wouldn’t call it exciting but it’s definitely more comfortable!
