A decent running trainer will really help.

You need to buy one size bigger than your shoe size (you need extra toe clearance)

You can get good running shoes at a discount online if you get previous season's colours.

Will you be running mainly on pavement/tarmac/firm, flattish, even, non-muddy grass/beaten track?

At a guess, you'll probably want a road shoe (tarmac etc), and as a beginner you may as well start with a neutral sole. When you've been running a bit longer, it wouid be worth visiting a running shop which does free no-purchase-required gait analysis (such as Runners Need) to see if you shoud try more supportive sole.

I think the Nike Vomero (dreadful puke worthy name, but good all-round shoe) is a good entry level one. And it's been around for yonks so you can usually find the old colours.

You need running shoes that are comfortable and fit you well. For your first pair go to a specialist running shop - you'll get good advice and be able to try on a few to see what feels right. It will cost you a little more to start with but it will be worth it. Once you kow what works for you then you can buy your next pair cheaper online.

Specialist running shop every time, especially for your first pair. They will be more expensive than online / outlets etc but you need to know what works for you and your feet. Then you buy the next ones online cheaper ;)
