Hiking and upper leg/hip pain?

I walk a fair bit and have done for several years now - generally 4-7 miles with occasional 12-14 miles when I have time off; always with a hill included (live at the bottom of one).

On Saturday I did 17 miles - reasonably fast and with an extra wee hill towards the end. The very tops of my legs are still twinging A LOT. Anyone know what the issue is/have any idea how to fix? Was fine with it the first couple of days but part of the reason I upped the distance was that I'm contemplating a walking holiday next year so had planned to do quite a bit more walking locally to build up my endurance - considering how I'm feeling it doesn't seem sensible to do another big walk until it's settled a bit.
