Shin splints! Nooo!

Just started couch to 5k, I'm doing okay, I've lost about a stone since April but just this week my shin splints are so horrendous!

I've got new shoes after a gait analysis but I've not done any running since the shin splints are so bad I can hardly walk downstairs :(

I rested properly from Thursday to Saturday but on Saturday I was walking around in pretty badly fitting shoes and today they are so sore I'm sat with ice on my legs and compression socks on!

Hi no advice but maybe try the c25k thread within this topic?

Resting Thurs to Sat is nowhere near enough. Shin splints can take from a few weeks to a few months to heal. You need to rest properly, definitely no running and don't wear shoes that don't have decent support. You can't hurry the process but you can make it worse if you don't rest properly (as you seem to be finding out the hard way).

Ice your legs and take ibuprofen if you need to but that will just make you feel more comfortable rather than aid the healing.

The best advice is from the experts:

A foam roller will help, it's pretty painful at first and you think WTF am I doing?!! But if you keep it up daily and wince through the initial pain then it does get easier. You need to bare all your weight onto it and roll back and forth over the shin, it's like a deep tissue massage (google for guidance) I also advise compression socks when you feel ready to run again, they made a big difference to mine. Good luck! (have you discovered run mummy run on FB? great group for all running related chat)

I've got compression socks and I'm resting and stretching. I think it might be a few weeks before I run again :(
