Can someone of my weight run?

I'm around 6 stone overweight. I'm trying to start running so have printed off a training plan which includes brisk walks and run/walk days at the moment. Running downhill feels ok, running on the flat feels horrific and running uphill feels like death. It's early days (week 3) but is it possible to run at 6 stone overweight? Im trying to lose weight but it's going to take a long time to lose 6 stone. I live in a hilly area so it's a tough place for training. I can manage nearly half a mile at the moment but I can barely get home afterwards and my legs feel like lead!

Please tell me this is possible! I'm going to start swimming too and maybe pilates to try and help.

Definitely. Plenty of people clearly much more overweight than me (3 stone overweight) have overtaken me at parkrun and 10k races...

Watch knees - make sure you have good trainers and replace them when they get tired, and do leg strengthening exercises. Also well fitting sports bra - or a boobuddy really helps with comfort without needing a million layers of compression tops and roasting alive...

You can but you need to be careful with how much stress you are putting on your joints. I would try power walking for a while first. If you are going to try running perhaps try on soft ground and have proper footwear as road running can be harsh on your joints.

Perhaps try hill running/walking. I do this in the park at the back of my house when I don't want to road run, running sort distances with a steep incline (steps/hills) at the end and then walking back down. I sometimes prefer it to running/ jogging long distances.

Curious 1981
I am beginning to feel like I am on trial. I can only say that i did no exercise ...became vegan and lost ten pounds.
I politely request this to be an end to it

Annie read your first post
You say that you gained 10 pounds

Curious1981 · 09/05/2019 13:20

Simply case that me and couple of other posters misinterpreted you

I love to go for run-walks. So I walk, but run for a section (the downhill bits!).
I wear trainers with warmer layers on top.

I'd second the suggestion for resistance training as this will do the most to protect your joints. Focus on exercises for your glutes, core and hamstrings in particular. It will all help your running too, even arm strengthening is good for improving your running. Good luck!

I'm doing a 16 week half marathon training plan. I completed week 2 today. I think I'll re do the week as I couldn't manage 1.5 miles today with 90s run/walk combinations. Just a little bit much but was nearly there. A little too much walking so doing it again next week probably sensible.
