@emummy and @TriSkiRun99 thanks. I think I underestimate the need for strength and conditioning...i am very under developed in both! What do you do you work on that....a class or weights or at home routine?

TriSkiRun99 · 07/10/2019 16:17

I cross train by swimming 1-2x a week, the odd cycle, yoga weekly and when I can make myself I do some body weight exercises at home using a 3kg weight. Just squats, lunges, plank, arm curls nothing fancy but it builds glute strength. Have a google of strength training for runners on runners world website they have done several articles on it.

emummy · 08/10/2019 15:25

I do bootcamp once a week, then a core routine from Paula Radcliffe's book and a strength routine at home. I got that from a book called ROAR about women's physiology & exercise, but there are loads on sites like women's running. I have also recently started swimming once a week.

I’ve just ordered that book emummy hoping it can help me understand my nutritional needs better as I can’t tolerate low carb very well and really need a more balanced option with my hormones.

emummy · 08/10/2019 20:59

I hope it helps TriSki, it has helped me.

Struggled a bit this morning, my legs were really heavy and I felt like I was running on the spot at times. But actually was only 6 seconds/mile slower than Monday, and Monday was my quickest time for this route since I had my little boy, so all in all I think I'm improving!

Wow so much running since I last posted, massive well done to the Loch Ness marathoners and everyone else pushing themselves 💕 felt close to death at the start of the week (probably just the merest threat of a cold 😀) so skipped Monday’s run and just did 2 very muddy miles today, the first was a very sedate 11:30 and the last 07:58 so some interesting pace variations going on. I can’t remember ever doing a sub 08:00 mile off road, felt quite zoomy!

Re: sock chat, I love love love Balega enduro socks. There’s something magical about them.

Well done to everyone since I last posted! I lost the thread. It disappeared from my list.

Lots of runs since done but I'll just add today's on as too many to count.

Had to have some antibiotics for a chest infection after my cold, so 6 days of no running!

Anyway back now and half marathon training going well. Up to 9 miles at the pace I want to race it at now.

Got out for early 3m this morning but I’m still struggling a lot with pace after a virus wacked me out for 3wks in Sept. I know from the past I just need to keep at it and it will come back. If I do parkrun on Sat I will hit 25k this week which is back where I want to be as I’m also wanting to build back up to HM. distance ideally before Xmas was my plan.

Did my ‘long run’ today because the weather was perfect - five very enjoyable miles in the forest 😊😊😊

Hi. I’ve just joined the C25k thread as well. Am on week 5.

Current tally for this month is: 17km

I’d love some tips on trail and off road running, including trainers. Thank you

WaitingforToto · 11/10/2019 06:43

6 mile threshold/sprints/hills session with the club last night and I found it quite difficult, but I guess that's good as it's pushing me harder than I would go on my own. I'm going to try to get a 7/8 miler in at the weekend, start upping the mileage

Your running is going so well Waiting!
Welcome notnowdennis! Trail running is great. The main feature is that you have to slow down a bit and pay a lot more attention to where you put your feet! There are loads of different shoes, some of them are best for particular surfaces. So the shoes for doing very muddy runs will be a bit different for the ones for running on hard packed trails or rocky paths for instance. So have a think about what surfaces you are running on and also how far you will run. Trail shoes tend to be less cushioned and they don't usually do the neutral or over pronators thing that road shoes come in. There are some makes and models which are more cushioned though. If you can get to a shop which sells them you can have a look around. Otherwise sites like sportsshoes.com can have good prices. I have had Karrimor ones from Sports Direct which were good to start with, and I have had Salomons, which were brilliant but too narrow for me. I currently have Inno8 X claws and have also run in their roclites and both are really good. If you need more padding Hoka trail shoes get good reviews too.

notnowdennis · 11/10/2019 16:54

Thanks Emummy. I am mostly on chalk hills (lots of clay too) or hard packed forest paths.

I was looking at the salomans but have fat feet so may give them a miss! The hokas look great but a bit pricey. I’ll check the others out too.

Thanks again- I really like the trails as it often distracts me from how long i’ve Been running for and it’s interesting views everywhere.

Stingynettle · 11/10/2019 20:22

6 miles this morning to see how my legs were post - marathon. First 4 miles were great but I started to feel a wee bit sore after that so not quite over the marathon yet.

I've signed up for a trail 10k in November. Not done much in the way of trail running before so I'll need to get some practice in over the next few weeks. I've bought some Asics trail shoes in the sale online. I use Asics for road running so I am hoping their trail offering agrees with my feet!

Progressive running session Wednesday night and sore ankle Thursday morning. Decided to rest up until race on Sunday as it’s part of a series of races that I’ve entered over the year and I don’t want to miss it. This year I’ve focused on 5K to half marathon but has made me realise I prefer the longer runs and all the shorter races are getting in the way of my weekend long runs! One race series involved 6 consecutive Weeks of 10K races which was not something I’ll be repeating in a hurry next year.

Ran round the woods today so I can take the dog and wear him out too. Tried out my new Speedcross 5 trainers. Really loved them. Lots or grip down the hills!

Anyone watching the 1:59:59 marathon attempt this morning? I'm riveted, incredible to (hopefully) see history be made!

AbuelitaAyahuasca · 12/10/2019 09:35

Yes! Wasn’t that incredible? He’s so amazing, what an emotional experience that was!

Stingynettle · 12/10/2019 10:24

Kipchoge is astonishing. What an achievement.

Less impressively, I got in a quick 3 miles this morning while dd was at her ballet class.

I didn't see it live as I was at parkrun

What he did is the equivalent of a 14:13 parkrun, eight and a half times in a row. For context, of the 51,363,611 parkruns completed globally, only 5 have been faster than his marathon pace

emummy · 12/10/2019 12:57

It was amazing! We were all gathered round a few phones at the parkrun start watching. He's a wonderful character, very humble and hard working. We are big Kipchoge fans in this house!

I did the royal parks half today. Gutted as I didn't beat my time from last year. I was sick twice and I think my bug hadn't really gone.
I was slow and I do feel slower runners/walkers get a rough deal. A volunteer got lost when directing me and had to radio in. I lost at least five minutes until I saw a bunch of other volunteers and ran towards them. There was a lot of volunteers just chatting or looking at phones and I do get that they were bored but it does seem like the last runners don't get the same amount of attention.

There were some amazing people and the protesters at Trafalgar Square were a real cheering squad! Many volunteers were absolutely amazing but some did seem to want to be elsewhere and when you are struggling you need a bit of support and not have to wait for conversations to stop before you know which way to go.

I think my distance days are gone. I am going to focus on strengthening my core and doing park runs and short runs for health.

emummy · 13/10/2019 18:21

Well donestaying, big congrats for pushing through when you didn't feel great. Sorry you didn't have a great experience with some of the volunteers, that's a problem with a number of races sadly.

@stayingaliveisawayoflife well done for getting to the end after being sick.

My 5 mile race today was also slower than last year but I think it was due to the conditions as it was more like a cross country due to all the rain! One more race left this year.
