After Couch5k - let’s keep running...

timetomoveon · 11/03/2019 09:59

There’s a group of us just finished the couch25k (New Years resolutions and all that...) so I thought I’d start a thread for us to keep up with our running progress as I know it was so helpful having the devious thread.

So I did my first post-couch25k run this morning. I was going to do 4.8 but I felt pretty good so decided to do the whole 5k. Managed it in 35 minutes which I was really pleased about. I’m still utterly amazed that I can run longer than 2 minutes without stopping.
So now I think I’m going to keep with the Monday, Wednesday, Friday pattern and keep doing 5k.

Haha @Coldandfrosty - that sounds... delightful! Should of popped a load of conditioner on your hair first - would have been a super intensive treatment!

Quick little run this morning - trying to get out of feeling like anything less than 5k is a failure. Beautiful day and really enjoyed it.

Haffdonga · 12/05/2019 13:32

Hello. You are my people! Can I join you? I finished C25k 2 weeks ago and I've been trying to keep up the same routine of week 9 3 times a week. Getting a bit samey.

I have an absolute terror of running in a group and having to try and chat while running at somebody else's speed in a gasping sweaty mess, or being publicly timed against beautiful young fit people so Parkrun sounds like my personal hell. I tried the Couch 2 5K Stepping Stone app but I couldn't run in time to the beat at all. Blush

How do I keep motivated?

BlindTipsy · 12/05/2019 14:00

Hi @Haffdonga Smile and well done on finishing C25k!

It is hard to starr motivating yourself after the structure of c25k I think. Don'tbe put off parkrun for the reasons you've said - really not full of super fit youngsters at all (or at least ours isn't). If you are curious pop along one week just for a look and you'll get a good feel for the atmosphere. That said I don't actually go very often myself mainly because I like just getting running and the extra time getting there and back puts me off!

Have you come across the nike run club app? Some good guided runs on there if you want to work on speed or need a bit of motivation.

Haffdonga · 12/05/2019 14:25

Thanks BlindTipsy I'll have a look at the Nike app. I also thought I might try the Parkrun route on my own just to see if I even could do it. I've never even run on grass before so guess it would be a bit slower/ harder work than my usual pavements.

timetomoveon · 13/05/2019 00:15

Welcome @haffdonga - congrats on finishing!
I’ve definitely struggled to stay as motivated since finishing - I never once missed a day during the 9 weeks (Mon, Wed, Fri every week) but I’ve usually only run twice a week since then....although this will be the week of 3 times :)
I’ve changed my route and changed my running playlist to try and keep it fresh Grin

Ran a full 5k this morning. I could hear it raining when I went to bed so I knew it would be cooler when I woke up. Was 27 with a heat index of 31...so much better Grin so decided once I’d started to run the full 5k. I hesitate to say it but I think I actually enjoyed it and I managed 34.24 which isn’t quite my best time but it’s pretty close. All that struggling through the horrid sweaty 3-4K runs must have built some kind of stamina.

This week, I’m going to run 3 times.

@blindtipsy don’t feel that less than 5k is no good. The most important thing is getting out there. I think as long as we keep getting out there we’re going to be able to at least maintain some kind of fitness and then when we can 5k, we will :)

Me again - posting to keep myself honest. Almost didn’t go out this morning but remembered that I’d said I was definitely doing 3 runs this week so I went......and did a full 5k and ran under 34 mins for the first time GrinGrinGrin very pleased with myself 33min 55.

Congratulations @timetomoveon - that's such a good time! Enjoy the warm glow of achievement Smile

Tried a new running club last night as the one me and Ds did c25k with isn't offering any training at the moment. It was very different as a really large group and on a training pitch but it was fun and very welcoming.

WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 15/05/2019 20:36

That's fab...can't get under 42 minutes and am struggling to run continually
Going to start couch to 5k again Sunday as I feel I need to go back to basics

timetomoveon · 17/05/2019 00:23

Running club sounds fun @blindtipsy!
@withallintenseandpurposes I would do it again too - or maybe start halfway through. When I was struggling I did shorter runs - 2.5 or 3 or 4km and that definitely helped me.

Did my 3rd run this week - woohoo!! That’s the first time since the beginning of April that I’ve done 3 in a week. Felt much better his morning so I decided to do 5k although I’d originally planned to try and go a little faster and just do 4. But I went a little faster and still did 5. Was really tired at the end but another pb.....33.05. Now I really feel amazing!!!!

I didn’t go this morning :( I didn’t sleep very well and so I turned the alarm off and dozed for another hour. And then I felt guilty for not going Confused
Wednesday. I’m not missing another day this week.

I did race for life yest 5k 32 min. Delighted. Fastest yet.

Well done time

timetomoveon · 21/05/2019 15:26

Wow @coldandfrosty - that’s brilliant! Congratulations!

I was talking to a colleague this week who does Ironman - he’s been very encouraging about my running although I’m sure he’s wondering how it’s possible to run this slowly Grin. He told me that I can run faster if I want - I just need to be willing to make it happen because it’s going to hurt more. Usually I get (a little bit) faster each km but this morning I tried running a bit faster from the start. He was right. It did hurt more. I nearly gave up at 4km but decided to do the last km. It definitely was harder doing that....but I got a pb :) 32.27. Totally thrilled with that :)
Hope everyone is running well.

That's fantastic @timetomoveon - well done!

I need a kick up the bum please! Over the last 2 weeks I have barely been out at all and now I am starting to lose my confidence. It's just been a combination of lack of opportunity and pure laziness 😞. I have been to the run club on Tuesday but nothing since.

Realistically I won't go today as have a long walk planned with friends this morning and need to get the house visitor ready as well but I am definitely going tomorrow!

Coldandfrosty · 24/05/2019 20:54

Oooh well done time are you going to start doing iron woman now Grin

blind dont worry about having a few days rest and time.off...you'll slot back into it fine.

I hadn't run since Sunday 5k. So I decided to go out and run 6 today. I ran 10. T E N. Wtf?! I just kept going. Similar pace so did 1hr 7. (Which is double time of my average 5k time)

timetomoveon · 25/05/2019 10:38

Wowowowowowow!! @coldandfrosty I’m sooooo impressed! That’s amazing!

I tried to sign up for a 5k race next month. It was already full though :( there was space on the 10k race but I didn’t think I was up to that in a month. And then look at you, frosty - a 10k!!! That’s really impressive.

And no Ironman/woman for me Grin

And @blindtipsy - don’t worry about having a few sessions off. I’ve been amazed that missing a few doesn’t seem to send me right back to the beginning again. I managed one run this week but three the week before. Will try for 3 this week but it might be 2......or 1 Wink

Just been in Edinburgh cheering my man on running 10k there at the marathon festival. Was lots of very fast runners!

Oh that's a shame it was full @timetomoveon hopefully will be another one soon you can do

BlindTipsy · 29/05/2019 08:20

Hope another potential 5k race pops up soon @timetomoveon - wonder if you will catch the race bug! 😊

Have managed to get a couple of runs in so feeling a bit more on track. Had friends down this weekend and they live a very active, outdoorsy life. On Monday they wanted to hire bikes and cycle round the local nature reserve place. It was a real eye opener for me - first time I have tried a different kind of leisure exercise (ie. not a 'workout') since doing c25k. I have to admit 8 months ago I would have made every excuse not to go and would have been really stressed about not keeping up etc. But my improved fitness and, I guess, much stronger legs made it an absolute breeze. I really enjoyed it. And then we went swimming the same day too! Amazing the difference it's starting to make to my whole life 😊

Coldandfrosty · 03/06/2019 22:00

@blindtipsy so good the impact it has on everything else isn't it.

How are we all?

WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 04/06/2019 19:02

Arghhh my five k time seems to be getting worse! Can even contemplate doing more at the minute! Feel like a massive fail

Pardalis · 05/06/2019 21:33

Hi everyone

I 'graduated' at the weekend and went for my first post C25K run tonight. I downloaded the Nike Run Club app and selected the 5k run.
First glitch was when it started over again about 3 mins in but I didn't stop, just kept running. Then it just seemed to take forever to get to the 5k. Finally finished in a piss poor time of 52 minutes!

But when I looked at the Samsung Health app on my phone it recorded 4.51 miles! Which does tie in more with the time.
Anyone else had experience of this?
If I have just run 4.51 miles then I'm super proud!
Actually I should just be proud that I've gone from 30 mins of running to 55 in one go 😂

crumpet · 10/06/2019 07:55

Hi Pardalis, i’ve Just come over here from the C25k board too - not managed further than 5k yet but so far still managing to run every other day. I’ve downloaded the Nike app but not tried it yet. Part of the problem is that it works for me to get out first thing, before waking the dc for school and getting ready for work, so 30-40 mins is fine, but i’m Not sure how motivated I am to get up earlier to fit in longer runs!

Pardalis · 10/06/2019 11:43

Hi Crumpet!

I've done 2 more runs since and still getting a difference between my phone and the app. Decided to stick for the moment to minutes opposed to distance on the Nike one until I think of something else. Think it might be because I run in a small area and do circuits.

Anyway I'll keep going!

crumpet · 11/06/2019 13:19

Have you tried the Strava app? I’ve used it in conjunction with the C25k app, and it has tracked well
