After Couch5k - let’s keep running...

timetomoveon · 11/03/2019 09:59

There’s a group of us just finished the couch25k (New Years resolutions and all that...) so I thought I’d start a thread for us to keep up with our running progress as I know it was so helpful having the devious thread.

So I did my first post-couch25k run this morning. I was going to do 4.8 but I felt pretty good so decided to do the whole 5k. Managed it in 35 minutes which I was really pleased about. I’m still utterly amazed that I can run longer than 2 minutes without stopping.
So now I think I’m going to keep with the Monday, Wednesday, Friday pattern and keep doing 5k.

Hill sprints sound scary, @blindtipsy!

Just back from a run. I woke up 1 minute before my run alarm goes off so I felt that was a sign from the universe that I should run Grin
Haven’t been out for about 10 days and my ankle was sore when I put my trainers on so planned to do 3-4km but felt good while I was running so carried on and did the full 5km...in my fastest time so far Shock
I was worried that it would feel like starting from scratch again and that I’d feel terrible but it was fine. All that fitness built up over the 9 weeks must still be there Grin
I was doing so well I even thought about 6km at one point but I quickly talked myself out of that!!
Hope everyone else is doing ok.

Hi :) in case anyone is still here....
Ran this morning - started way faster for my first km than normal and so suffered through the other 4. Was going to just do 4 but carried on for the full 5 so feel good about that. Was sooooo hot this morning though so that didn’t help either.
It’s my birthday tmrw and my target was always to be able to run 5km by my birthday. And I’ve done it 6 times so far ...on two different continents! I really can’t believe that it’s possible to go from nothing to this in 3 months but it really is :)

Hello. Sorry this fell off my active list and just came to search for it.

I've totally lapsed...well not TOTALLY but I haven't been doing as much and it shows!

I have been bitten by the parkrun bug and love it now. Am even going to start volunteering at junior one on Sunday.

Coldandfrosty · 19/04/2019 22:35

@timetomoveon well remembered about the date! Am still seeing him going well. Fingers crossed. He has a big 10k next week...so is full of running chat. Ha!

Have you settled into your new house?

Off to bed cos its park run in the morning. But I shall come back.

timetomoveon · 20/04/2019 01:40

Hi @coldandfrosty :) glad to hear the date is still going well.
Yes all settled in - we’ve been on holiday this week. Difficult to find anywhere to run so I did 4K on a treadmill in the hotel on Wednesday but that’s it. Going home today so hopefully will be back at it on Monday.
It’s great that you’re getting into the parkrun thing. I think it must be good to have that weekly motivation. There was a 5k race in June advertised in the local paper but by the time I worked myself up to registering for it, it was all sold out so I’m on the lookout for another.
Enjoy your weekend :)

Coldandfrosty · 20/04/2019 21:25

@timetomoveon hope you've had a lovely holiday!

I got a pb at parkrun today 35.57. Only just in the 35 bracket but delighted to have got it there

gnushoes · 20/04/2019 22:30

Can I join in? Have run roughly 5k in and off for a decade but many layoffs due to meno and was a very late starter. Did the c25 earlier this year and now running 5k at about 34/35 minutes and I've never been brave enough to Parkrun.

timetomoveon · 21/04/2019 01:29

Hi @gnushoes - welcome :) yes, all runners welcome here!
Well done on the pb @coldandfrosty :)

Holiday was great - didn’t do a lot but back to work tmrw and running as well. I usually run at around 35 mins as well. My pb is 34.20 but I think with the amount I’ve eaten and drink this week, I’ll be a long way off that tmrw Grin

OP posts:
Coldandfrosty · 21/04/2019 08:10

@gnushoes people do park run in 57 minutes! 35ish is a mid point time to finish. Parkrun is honestly lovely. So friendly and welcoming. Ask me anything about it if anything specific is worrying you. Unless your local event is tiny (eg you live on Shetland) then you 100% wont be last with that time and no one is ever last anyway because they have a volunteer whose job it is to be last every week.

BlindTipsy · 22/04/2019 16:54

Ooh well done @Coldandfrosty - thats my aim to get under 36 minutes. Bet you felt great.

Haven't run much this week as was in a car accident on Wednesday and was quite sore after. Was starting to stress me out a bit as I worry about losing my motivation and progress but managed a 3 1/2 km this morning and managed to get my fastest pace so far at least!

Took the opportunity of not running and volunteered at parkrun this week. Which was fun but quite stressful as was giving out the tokens at the end. Was terrified I was going to mux the order up but there were some experienced volunteers about to keep me on track! I agree that everyone I have come across at parkrun so far has been really friendly and welcoming. I tend to run with my niece and DS2 so we come in about 38-40 mins and are nowhere near the back.

timetomoveon · 24/04/2019 10:55

Hope you’re feeling ok @blindtipsy after the accident but we’ll done on your fastest 3.5km :)

I ran on Monday morning but only 3km. The weather is soooooo hot here. I went out at 4.45am and the heat index was already 39 degrees. I just could do more than 3km. My legs felt fine but the rest of my body didn’t Grin
I should have gone this morning but didn’t sleep well so gave it a miss. I have an exam on Saturday for a course for a masters that I’m doing so I’m spending so much time working on that at the moment. Will be back on it properly after the weekend.

BlindTipsy · 02/05/2019 17:37

Yay! A little boast if thats ok. Have been trying to get under 36 mins 5k for AGES (I know - I an sooo slow) and just couldn't seem to get any faster. Haven't managed a run since Sunday then just went out and managed....34 mins 44 secs! Woohoo!!!!

I think having to run past my stbxh in his car probably helped - I sprinted that bit

How's everyone else doing? How was your exam @timetomoveon ? I cannot imagine running in that heat!

timetomoveon · 03/05/2019 00:24

Yay @blindtipsy - great job on the pb :) and yay for sprinting past the stbx Grin

Exam went well thanks - no more study until August which is nice.
Heat here is nasty. I didn’t run Monday as I was out late Sunday night but then did 30 mins slowly (4.2k) on Wednesday as it wasn’t so hot but this morning was nasty. Heat index was 40 at 4.40am when I started and so I went super slow and did only 25 mins. I just couldn’t go any more.

My running hasn't been going well. I've been struggling mu h more. I was putting it down to pollen/having been unwell but other option is that I'm just not running as regularly since finishing c25k. I was really strict about at least 3x a week then, often more. Now I'm often only once a week, sometimes twice. So I think building it back up again is a plan.

So I'm going to also post more on here as I think that helped before on other thread.

Was with running club on thur night and was going to cut off after 4k but I said no no let's keep going and did the full 5. (Plus we did extra cos we jogged to the start of the route)

@BlindTipsy our run director says if you mess up on a volunteer role then whoevers results have been entered wrongly can claim a free run the next week Wink which always makes me feel good. Your accident sounds so scary, hope you're ok.

Coldandfrosty · 03/05/2019 23:05

Pressed post early as sometimes I lose a post after writing it for ages so thought better to start a new one.

@timetomoveon glad exam went well! Omg at those temps!!! No way could I have even walked about in that heat! Massive respect for attempting to RUN in that.

@BlindTipsy Star well done that's a fabby time

I am going to try a new parkrun an hour away tomo it's by the beach and looks lovely!

I've got my new bike here now and so going to also start cycling to junior parkrun on sundays (10k there and back cycling) and volunteering at it

timetomoveon · 04/05/2019 10:52

I’ve not run 3 times a week since I finished the couch25k - posting was definitely keeping me honest. I’m committing to 3 times a week this month and I’ll post here to try and keep myself on track.
Have fun at the new park run tmrw @coldandfrosty

This mornings run beautiful but freezing...deceptive Scottish sun!!

After Couch5k - let’s keep running...
WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 04/05/2019 21:31

Been doing 5k three times a week for the last week after my op
It's been hard and I haven't been able to run the whole 5k continuously but feeling like it's getting better

timetomoveon · 08/05/2019 09:20

Great job @Withallintenseandpurposes :) sounds like you’re bouncing back!

I missed Monday - couldn’t bring myself to get up on a public holiday. Went this morning - it was cooler today (heat index 33) but I still went slow. Did 30 minutes - I’ve started just listening to the last couch25k session - and I’m going to stick like that until it gets cooler and hope to just increase my distances slightly. Got to 4.3km in the 30 mins today which is fine and I was able to speed up for the last km.

I’ve found a 5km race in the center of the city next month. It’s quite a big race and I keep hovering over the enter button but I haven’t plucked up the courage to click yet.

OP posts:
WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 08/05/2019 13:34

Wow that's fab time!

timetomoveon · 09/05/2019 23:28

Thanks :)
Just back from my 30 min run this morning. Similar pace to last time but didn’t manage to speed up as much at the end. Got to 4.25km in my 30 mins.
My aim is to run 3 times next week ...for the first time in over a month Blush

WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 10/05/2019 08:13

You are doing fab...I'm finding it hard to keep up the motivation at the mo with being tired from work the awful weather and think I've got my first cold of the year coming but I will get back to regular three times a week

BlindTipsy · 10/05/2019 11:08

@Coldandfrosty Wow - your parkrun looks like it's in a beautiful setting!

Was going to try and park run tomorrow as haven't been out since a slow 5k on Monday but decided to just get on with it today instead and managed another 5k pb of 34mins 31 secs so feeling pretty good 😊

@timetomoveon you may be a good person to ask this with your experience of running in high temps. What can I get to keep the sweat out of my eyes when it gets warmer? Do those headband things do that? It's quite cool here at the moment but when we had the nice weather a few weeks ago my eye stung and my eyelid actually got quite sore for a few days,

timetomoveon · 11/05/2019 01:55

Wow @blindtipsy well done on your pb :) that’s fantastic.
I think a head band would work for keeping the sweat off. I don’t actually sweat very much so I usually just wipe my face on my T-shirt when I’ve finished running. That makes me sound pretty unpleasant I realize Blush

OP posts:
Coldandfrosty · 11/05/2019 20:05

Speaking of sweat...Today I ran with a shower cap on I ended up with such sweat inside it...delightful! I'm sure you all wanted to know that Grin was a parkrun birthday party so we were all dressed up as unicorns. I only had a unicorn shower cap so went for that.
