Resistance training/body pump at home?

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 22/02/2019 14:19

I really want to take up some resistance/weight training alongside my regular running. I’ve done some kettlebell stuff at home but I’m bored of it. I can’t get to any classes for logistical reasons - are there any I could follow on YouTube people would recommend? Looking for a way to tone and strengthen than a lot of cardio necessarily (tho I know a decent resistance workout will be as intense as cardio)

Check out fitness blender, they have a wide range of home workouts.

I used them until my dumbbells didn’t really cut it anymore, but now just transfer them to the gum when I need to.

That looks great thanks! Do you know what size dumbbells would be a good start point?

You can get Body Pump (and all the other Les Mills classes) streamed into your home by paying a monthly subscription - it's a bargain at 9.99 a month. I bought some weights off eBay and do 2 or 3 classes a week to supplement my running. Usually do a Body balance and a combat. Also if you like dance based workouts try The fitness Marshall on YouTube. He's hilarious- fun dances for free

Ooh now that’s interesting. Do you stream via tv? We don’t have a smart tv but do have a fire stick. What size weights do you need to do it with?

I use a Roku stick, but I've got a friend who uses the amazon stick with no bother. The weights I bought were these: rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F332355507658. They are £45 as opposed to the "official" ones that cost £300+. And having used both I prefer mine!

If you can try a trx. Have a look on Instagram or YouTube. It’s fun (and hard work)

Djchickpea - just wanted to say a massive thanks fro the recommendation. I’ve signed up for a trial of les mills and love it! Haven’t committed to buying the weights yet so muddling through with a kettlebell and hand weights. But suspect I’ll be buying your suggested ones soon :)

Oh great, pleased to hear it!! I'm a bit of a Les Mills fangirl so good to hear you are converted! There's a good LMOD Facebook site which is good motivation too 😊

I do body pump classes from YouTube, have a smart TV though which makes things easier.

Got a set of barbells from Argos for next to nothing.

Honeylane- what set did you get? I’ve looked at barbells but can’t compare the weights as no idea what body pump ones are. I’m currently using an 8kg kettlebell and then two small 1 kg hand weights. Find kettlebell very awkward for some of the lifting ones hence me thinking dj ones suggested look good but open to other ideas if you’ve found better!
