Finding time for exercise

How do you find time to exercise if you work full time and have young children?

It's difficult. Has become easier as my DC have got older. But also, my DH never compromised his time,so I started doing what he did - I started exercising at set times and he had to be in.

Currently, tend to do a class Tuesday evenings (1 DC is at an activity at same time), DH needs to be home to looks after DC 2. Another class Thursday evening, we actually leave the kids home alone for approx 30 mins as DH does his sport that evening too. I have Fridays off so do something then, and at the weekends.

But much of my exercise is at home - I'll go on the treadmill or do some kind of circuits in my bedroom. So actually I can workout when the kids are home too. But as they've got older, they don't need me so much. When younger, I belonged to a gym with a crèche, or we just had to take evenings in turn.

Part of my commute, so I cycle or walk part of the journey.
At very least, park car further away so longer walk to office.

Early morning, so I get up before anyone else and go for a run. I'm back by 6am. I regularly do this 3 mornings before work. I'm lucky to have DH home to do this, his previous job involved a lot of travel and so any exercise outside the house was a challenge

I really struggled to find the time but a few months ago decided to start running again and manage to fit it in by doing it straight after dropping the DC in breakfast club on the couple of mornings a week that I work from home and then once at the weekend. I need to fit in a bit of pilates now somehow. It's really hard when the kids still need putting to bed and can't ne left alone in the house yet. I also can't do much if i need to be in the office as i leave the house at 7 and not back til I pick up the kids.

In winter how do you motivate yourself to go out a run at 4 or 5am Sleepymouse?
Hats off to you for that dedication.

David Lloyd gyms have kids club 2 hour free upto age 14 so that a huge help to be able to do a Spin class or circuits.

Clever by the gym as for many if no kids club then little points parents joining their gym.

Gym at 9pm once DH is home, and we've eaten, done bedtime etc. I'm not going to lie, finding motivation to go out at that time is bloody hard - but once I'm there, it's fine - and it's then or never.

Also the odd weekend slot - DS is going to a party tomorrow so I'll go then. Again, not easy, but I have to take advantage of any child free time!

Unless you have a supportive partner you won't have time. End of.

I am single parent, and work full time. My son is older so I can exercise when he's at school and then work when he's here (usually very early morning).

It's hard.

I’m trying to find the time for this too; I used to go straight after work but even if DH was home early enough that cuts into the very limited time I have with DD. My new plan is to go a couple of times a week once she’s in bed; I know once I get into the habit of it I’ll keep up with it, just starting is the problem.
My other plan on nights when DH works late is to do some home work outs once DD is in bed.

there was a recent thread on exercising in the morning, that might help you see what's possible:

I cycle to work and run at lunchtime. Then run at the weekend too.
