Anyone fancy doing a triathlon training thread? Sprint or Olympic or GOTri or Ironman or whatever? Compare training, schedules, competitions and the mega kit fest that is triathlon.

There have been a couple of threads in the last year or two but they’ve dropped off the radar. Please join me! Smile

Life- how was the cycle route. I'm not going to be able to recce it, so any tips?

I'm practicing nutrition a lot on the bike, so plan is to eat every 20mins, 1st hour is banana and flap jack, 2nd hour- 3 Naked Bars, 3rd hour Tailwind/ more bars, 4th hr Tailwind.

I'm wearing a DHB trisuit and will pull on a pair of cycling shorts on top for the bike and take them off for the run.

I'm used to swimming in the mornings so always on an empty stomach, so not sure whether to eat or not on race day?

Lifeisabeach · 24/04/2019 16:18

Nate - I haven’t done the course yet, we’re planning to do it the May bank holiday weekend. I’ll let you know what it’s like!

I usually have porridge in the morning so will probably have that in the hotel room early, and then a gel/bar or something an hour-ish before the swim start.

Thatsnotmyotter · 24/04/2019 16:24

I’ve found my people 😍

Anyone doing OutlawX (70.3) in Sept? I’ve not really started training seriously yet, although I’ll definitely do a few sprints and an Olympic over the summer so should get on it ASAP. I am training, just no specific training plan yet and have been focusing on my running. I’ve only been outside on the bike twice this year and have yet to brave an OW swim! 😬

Lifeisabeach · 24/04/2019 16:25

Nate - how are you storing your food on the bike? One of those bags that goes on the top tube?

Nateismine · 24/04/2019 16:55

I've bought a bag from Wiggle but haven't decided yet to keep it.
At the moment I am taping bars all over the bike which is actually working really well. I think I can manage with that plus trisuit pockets.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 24/04/2019 21:17

Hello otter! I’ve not braved a 70.3 yet but I’m with you on sprints and an Olympic. I love reading about the build up to the Staffs 70.3, maybe I’ll take the plunge one year as my parents are local to that one.

First proper lake swim coming up this weekend Smile I’ve been doing some lake/waterfall pool dips over the winter and did a little river swim the other night but none of that involved front crawl! Can’t wait to get some proper lake stuff done. Easter holidays as usual has screwed with my training schedule.

Wow waterfall swims? They sound amazing!

I’m going to have to get in the sea this weekend. I’m not even sure my wetsuit still fits as I haven’t worn it since before I was pregnant with my (7 month old) son! It might be a very chilly non-wetsuit swim!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 25/04/2019 11:42

I highly recommend getting in cold water at the bottom of a beautiful Yorkshire dales waterfall! In a wetsuit to start with and then just in swimming costume and bobble hat. Not proper swimming but very good for the soul I find.

Good luck with the wetsuit!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 25/04/2019 11:43

Oh and if you dip in proper cold water then by the time OWS season gets going the water feels balmy!

OP posts:
Lifeisabeach · 25/04/2019 11:53

Oooh bee, a Yorkshire waterfall sounds chilly! Bet it's beautiful though.

I did my first OWS at the weekend and was surprised that it really wasn't cold at all. It was in a fairly shallow lake though and we'd had lovely warm weather. Even getting out and stripping off the wetsuit wasn't too bad!

Welcome Otter

Igottastartthinkingbee · 25/04/2019 12:02

Painfully cold but strangely enjoyable! I can’t explain it. It’s even better without a wetsuit.

What tri suits does everyone have? I’ve been using my first and only tri suit for 3 years now. It’s just a cheapy from Amazon and it’s been fine until now. The last time I used it 2 weeks ago I realised afterwards that it had rubbed my chest where it zips up at the front. I’ve now got two inch long marks which I think are going to scar Hmm So I’m after an upgrade, any recommendations? I’m 5ft, size 8/10, small boobs if that helps! My next tri is in 6 weeks so I need to get something sorted.

TriSkiRun99 · 26/04/2019 10:12

I got a cheap suit off Amazon last year but I’ve only used it once, I need to find see if it fits! I bought Zoot Tri shorts last year which are ok but bit too short kept riding up but they had better pad than the suit I’ve got.
Great ladies swim fit session last night got good 1.3k in and we were learning to dive which is a massive first for me. I was Grin from ear to ear afterwards. Cycled 18m to work this week and got a 10m run in Monday and quick 3m run in yesterday lunchtime. Feeling zonked today though so it will be Pilates & stretch day.

Thatsnotmyotter · 27/04/2019 14:49

I have a 2XU suit that I got reasonably cheap on eBay and works pretty well. My Castelli tri shorts were my absolute favourite but they’ve given up the ghost after three years (including wearing them up until I was 41 weeks pregnant!) of hammering. I would love a Castelli tri suit! Maternity pay means I’m holding out currently! I tend to go for the tri shorts and sports bra approach a lot of the time anyway. Or I did, until breastfeeding boobs happened...

Feeling a little bit smug today as I got a massive post-baby 5km PB for the second time this week.

Lifeisabeach · 27/04/2019 15:12

I’ve got a Zone3 trisuit that seems pretty good, but it’s the only one I’ve tried.

Well done on the PB Otter!

I ran 12 miles this morning! It was really tough as storm hannah was blowing me backwards, but I got it done. I’m absolutely knackered now though and can’t stop eating!

Thatsnotmyotter · 27/04/2019 15:29

That’s the great thing about running decent distances beach you can pretty much eat what you like!

Nateismine · 27/04/2019 15:43

This ^^. The first year ever not to feel guilty when eating the kids' Easter Eggs Blush

TriSkiRun99 · 29/04/2019 14:44

Got my 2nd brick session done this morning, with an hour on the turbo (I was to scared to take the road bike out on greasy raining roads ) and then a 6k run. Legs feeling ok, but yep eaten crap load of chocolate for lunch Blush.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 29/04/2019 16:59

Well done triski! I swam at lunchtime, similarly fuelled session to yours, custard slices this morning Blush Off out for a big bike ride tomorrow, might tempt my training partner into a small run as soon as we’re back. I’ve been very slack on brick training so far this year.

Igottastartthinkingbee do you mind me asking where you swim? I’m also in the Dales (Wensleydale). I’m not very good at swimming but I need to learn FC and get some OW practice as I’m signed up for Swim Serpentine in September. Way, way out of my comfort zone but I’m fixated on getting a London classics medal! I was thinking of swimming in Semerwater but maybe waterfall / river swimming is a gentler introduction! Any tips?

Igottastartthinkingbee · 02/05/2019 22:05

Sheepy I’m the other end of the dales to you, well not actually in the national park at all. Leeds/Harrogate way really. Did the wild swimming in Malham and Goredale. Proper lake swimming in Allerthorpe near York (man made sandy fairly shallow and therefore warm!) and Blue Lagoon near Pontefract (very friendly, no weeds, lovely big bouys for sighting). But they’re probably a bit far for you?

Personally I find waterfall dips just a source of adventure and relaxation. Rivers less of the relaxation and just adventure! Lakes, especially the organised ones are the best for useful swim practice and acclimatisation. They’re safer and therefore you can just get on with swimming. No worrying about what’s in the water or what if I get in trouble or how far can I swim? Get yourself to a proper open water session and leave some of the guess work out of it. Being able to relax in open water is a big plus!

Planning another cycle & run session for Monday and possibly a sea-swim late afternoon if weather plays ball. Swim training last night, and ran yesterday then did cycle commute to work n back today 28k. So trying to get more training in. Two weeks to my first sprint now. ParkRun tom then off to support hubbie who is running his first Marathon but think I’ll end up just as tired driving there 3hrs, looking after kids & trying to coordinate watching /supporting him & driving home again. But he’s super supportive of my events too so we are a team, hence I’m bagsing Monday to do my stuff Grin Anyone else got Bank Hols training planned?

Igottastartthinkingbee · 03/05/2019 22:14

Busy weekend triski! Which marathon is your husband doing?

I’m planning on getting at least some cycling and swimming in. Should’ve gone for a run tonight but I feel I bit under a cloud 🙁 not sure why but had no energy.

Tour de Yorkshire spectating also happening this weekend, hoping to spot Froome and Cav slogging up a hill!

Sounds like you are doing really well with your training TriSkiRun99

Bank holiday plans here - did a lake swim tonight and it was freezing, so different to the Easter weekend when I last went in there. Couldn’t feel my hands by the end so getting changed was a struggle! Parkrun tomorrow, hoping for an 8ish mile run Sunday and then we’re riding the Staffs bike course on Monday!

TriSkiRun99 · 04/05/2019 18:12

We are waiting to cheer DH on at Southampton Marathon tom. Hopefully he won’t sleep too badly as we are all same hotel room - 2kids & us looks like quite a few runners in the bar bit tonight so FingersXed no late slamming doors at the hotel Smile good luck with the Tri training. I did PR this morn and really thought I’d got a PB but missed it by 9secs on the official time.. Arrh.Smile will try again next week!
