CYcling for weight loss?

I want to buy a bike. No idea where to start. I know I CAN ride a bike but I’ve never owned one..

Will cycling help me lose weight? I’m really quite fat 😞

Any advice appreciated!

Do you want to cycle for pleasure, commute or both?

Go and look at the lightest bike and most comfortable bike, don’t spend to much at first on a bike. Get the saddle put at the correct height so you ride correctly.

Cycling alone will not reduce weight, but with a decent diet and a few miles each week you’ll notice a big difference to your body and fitness quickly

I have mates who have used diet and cycling and list 5stone

If you don't eat your calories back, then you can shift a lot of calories cycling and its good, low impact on joints exercise and can be very social. Have a look for Breeze rides close to you for women only rides which are very friendly to new riders

Thanks! I’ll want to cycle to work but that’s only ten mins down the road so I’d like to go out on bike rides tooo. I just need something to feel better about myself and I’ve tried tried many other things! I think I’d enjoy a bike ride, i a bike at centerparcs years ago and loved it

I’d obviously start by getting a bike and possibly taking it to the park and trying out for a few session, build up the Cycling. Work may only be ten minutes by bike but that probably 2 miles so 4 miles per day x 5 is 20 miles each week.

Then go out at the weekend Saturday & Sunday for short rides to start 5 miles and build up by a miles or two each weekend.

If you do this through the winter months by next April you’ll be able to use the light evenings to cycle & before you know it you’ll be covering 50-60 miles per week and more

Oh, glad I’ve found this thread. I need to lose a stone but also need a bit of a lifestyle change. Have been feeling lethargic and sendentary and not eating well. There’s a bike in the shed so I’m going to get it out and adjust it and take it for a spin...
Littlepond have you been yet? How did you get on?

"You have a lovely slim figure!" exclaimed a smart business woman on the train today (I didn't know her from Eve). "It must be all the cycling you do!"

I get to well preen & her karma got double boosters today.
I dunno about weight loss, but I imagine cycling can help deter weight gain which is a good thing for most of us.

I've considered biking to work too but it's a good 30 mins just one way and I figured I don't fancy turning up to work all sweaty or drenched from rain if it's pissing it down. Took up spinning classes though and it's bloody hard work! Still makes me feel much better! I don't think I lost any weight in the month and a bit I've been going but psychological effect is great! I see a different person in the mirror now. Go for it, it won't do any harm =)
