First running injury! Swollen ankle what do I do?

Went over on my ankle but I carried on running. Then limped home. Now it’s swollen.

If you have had this how long did it take until you were back running and did you treat it in anyway? I’m limping around the house :-(

Rest, Ice, compression and elevation and don’t start running until its better, sorry!

Yokatsu · 20/06/2018 21:19

I can normally swim (or aquafit for a bad injury) a bit sooner than i can exercise (not a runner so can't advise on running specifically )

Brown Turkey beat me to it!

Sallymummy99 · 20/06/2018 21:25

Doesn’t sound serious but yes you must rest it before u go back out. When you do go back out and it twinges you must stop.

lljkk · 20/06/2018 21:26

sounds like ligaments & they are bears to get better. Mild activity that improves the circulation without adding to the strain is good.

Bigfathairyones · 20/06/2018 21:27

I always went for the ‘if it’s not better in 5 days, go to the GP’ rule. No exercise on it for 5 days at least too. 90% of them are fine on the 5th day.

FrostyCock · 20/06/2018 21:29

Sorry to say but it could be up to 4 weeks before it is healed. Absolutely not worth attempting to run until it is completely better as you will just put your recovery back even further.

Yokatsu · 20/06/2018 22:08

Again not a runner but for a minor I can revert to low impact fitness activities (including swimming or fitness blender low impact) with an ankle support straight off, then resume properly after about week and half.

For a major ankle injury 1 week rest, then aqua aerobics and pottering swimming a some point in week 2. Heavier swimming some point in week 3 or 4. Weight bearing with kinesiology tape (or ankle support if I'm feeling lazy and it's not too bad) some point from the end of week 3 onwards.

Keeping it moving in water/non weight bearing can help alot

Yokatsu · 20/06/2018 22:10

Unless you're worried it's broken (A&E) or you are repeat spraining it afterwards all the GP will say is rest, ice elevate ibuprofen

Boringusername444 · 20/06/2018 22:36

Oh its definetly not broken.
I can sort of walk on it with mild pain. If I were to stand on one leg with it it would hurt a lot.

I’ve had a bag of frozen peas on it all night and rested it.
I will need to walk a mile to work and then back again tomorrow. Other than that I will rest it.

I will be gutted if it takes a long time to heal, sob.

I got a swollen ankle and stupidly ran on it. Do not do this!!!

Ice and elevation, buy a compression bandage, rest until totally better. Mine took about 3 months but partly because I made it worse, I suspect I might have had a stress fracture.

bibblebobblebubble · 24/06/2018 23:09

Oh and I was advised by physio not to wear heels
