Stitch while running

I am new to exercise, but I have been running since January, increasing my distance and running longer etc building up quite gradually. Recently I have had 3 runs where I have been literally in agony with a stitch in my side, and the last time it was so bad I sat on the pavement to wait before carrying on.

Any suggestions? I run before eating usually, but not always - but always at least a few hours after eating; I’m well hydrated. I eat a low carb diet and was recommended these sugar free isotonic drink tablets which I have been using before long runs. Interspersed with these awful debilitating stitches, I’ve been doing 10kms, beating my times, generally doing really well.

It’s really stumping me, and because my running opportunities are quite limited it’s very annoying when I get the chance to go out and either have to stop or have a miserable time because of it! Any tips for pre-run to prevent, or during run to make it go?

I think stitches originate in the diaphragm, so they're related to breathing, not digestion. Similar to hiccups, I find that they can be brought under control with deliberate slow, deep breathing.
