Showers at gym

I asked to be referred to the active lifestyle programme and had my induction today. Was unsure about shower facilities, but, pleased to discover they are individual. What is the etiquette? Is it acceptable to walk from shower to changing cubicle in my towel?

Of course it is, struggling to imagine what else you would do Confused

DairyisClosed · 11/04/2018 16:16

Yes.

wolfmom · 11/04/2018 16:30

I know it seems daft to ask, but, gyms are a whole new world for me

Yes it is. Ask away Smile

MayFayner · 11/04/2018 16:33

It's fine to ask questions OP. Enjoy the gym.

rainbowfudgee · 11/04/2018 16:34

Yes a towel is fine. In my gym lots of women parade around starkers!

lljkk · 11/04/2018 20:38

Towel+clothes hanging on back of door within a shower cubicle is more the norm where I have been.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 11/04/2018 20:40

Please be sure not to dry/dress in the communal area and dry your feet facing away from the door.
(wish they kept bleach spray at our gym for my poor eyes) Confused

wolfmom · 11/04/2018 22:21

I couldn't change in communal area, to be honest it would be a fast shuffle from shower to changing cubicle. I may have another look at showers to see how feasible dressing in there is.

Generally showers are in demand and taking the time to get dressed in there (if there even is room) would cause a queue for the showers at peak times - it’s not the norm anywhere I’ve been

lljkk · 12/04/2018 08:44

Ha! Showers I've seen are many & under-used. I don't pay attn to what others do. But there's no Q for the showers. Some deffo go home to shower there instead.

Teen DD who is obsessive about daily showers was affronted when I said she should shower after a run the other day. She thought good deordorant was fine to tide her over. It's what they rely on after school PE, after all.

DragonsAndCakes · 12/04/2018 08:46

It might be the done thing to dry off in the shower so you don’t drip into the changing room.

CrumbliestFlakiest · 12/04/2018 08:49

I tend to undress to sports bra and underwear and wrap the towel round me til i'm in the cubicle, taking fresh underwear with me to put on after my shower. I can cope with the communal changing after that.

Tbh, unless i'm going somewhere after the gym, i just prefer to come home and shower.

SinglePringle · 12/04/2018 08:50

You can only dry / dress in the commmunal area at my gym as there is only a communal area - no cubicles.

I get undressed in changing room, wrap towel around body and head to shower. Shower self. Dry self as best I can in a damp, wet space. Wrap towel around self once again. Head back to open communal area.

Finish drying, attempting to maintain some modesty by putting knickers on under towel but accepting I have to remove towel to actually put bra on. Indeed, I care not about the Free Breasts.

Finish drying / dressing / putting face on.

Leave.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/04/2018 08:53

Nobody dresses in the shower cubicle at my gym. Most people come out n their towel, pretty much dry and change in the communal area.

In fact I do exactly the same as Pringle

Enjoy the gym OP. You'll be an old hand in no time!

ShotsFired · 12/04/2018 08:56

@wolfmom I bought a very light dressing gown for holidays and places like gyms. It takes up less room than a towel and my body dries off underneath it while I do makeup and dry hair. Then just get changed. Also no risk of slippage!

(without the stupid wording on the back obvs)

I shower at home, sometimes with a trip to Tesco in between!

dementedpixie · 12/04/2018 08:59

Our gym has 1 cubicle I think and the showers are pretty crap so showering at home is what I prefer to do

RapunzelsRealMom · 12/04/2018 09:10

I do t advise getting dressed in the shower cubicle OP. That'll drive your fellow gym-goers mad if they're waiting for a shower!

Wrap your towel around you, grab your toiletries and find a spot to get dried and dressed

JustGettingStarted · 12/04/2018 22:03

I dry off in the shower so I don't drip then walk in my towel to the locker area.

I sometimes have to walk to the sink or something - I will occasionally just hold my towel in front of my body if I'm too lazy to actually wrap it. I am not particularly modest. I will drop my towel when I get to my locker. There's a curtained cubicle for those who want them but I don't use it.

I do refrain from bending over in front of people. I am also more modest during the hours when children are there to swim on weekends. A few parents seem to ignore the "no boys over 7" rule and a few let their kids run around playing chase. The lockers are set up in areas like bays and I try to avoid the children . I'd rather not give them an eyeful. But I won't go into the cubicle or try to dress under a towel.
