Good to see lots of great progress by everyone this week. I did W4R3 today so am looking ahead to W5 and a 20 minute run by the end of next week! Shock I’ve been running very slowly and it’s good to read that that’s OK!

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 03/11/2018 00:12

I was really sick after my big run last night. Assumed I had pushed myself too hard. Turns out it’s some kind of bug. So no running tonight...W5R3 tomorrow I guess 😕

whynot93 · 03/11/2018 09:00

I'm joining this if it's ok..
I just purchased my warmer outside running kit, wireless head phones (to keep my ears warm) and they arrive tomorrow so I'm good to go!

Never been a runner but I'm feeling so demotivated at the gym so thought I'd give this a go.. tips welcome 🙏

5SecondsFromWilding · 03/11/2018 14:37

Jellycatspyjamas, great work! In the earlier weeks, I used to drive to my running spot to make sure I had an entirely flat route. Would this be an option for you?

I've completed week 4 today Grin Thank you everyone for all the encouragement! It's strange to think that the beginning of this week was the only run I e ever cut short but that it helped teach me to pace myself and slow the F down rather than just give up. I'm almost certain I can walk faster than I ran today but I competed it and didn't once toy with the idea of stopping. I was debating repeating the week but I'm going to push on and see how I get on with the beast that is week 5.

CanIKondo · 03/11/2018 14:37

I did it! I managed to run for 30 minutes despite the rain, wind, treacherous leaves and dog jumping up at me. Wouldn't have believed I could have done this 3 months ago so thank you for the encouragement. Realised I need to do week 9 twice more, but does anyone have any suggestion for what next?

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 03/11/2018 19:13

I’m going out for W5R3 tonight if my children ever go to sleep. Then I’m going to come home and eat a curry and drink wine. At least I’ll be negating like 280 calories of it. But hey. It’s saturday night

CanIKondo · 03/11/2018 19:56

Wow that's impressive going out after the kids asleep. I have to go early on or I'd never manage it. Enjoy the curry!

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 03/11/2018 20:11

Urgh the run is not happening. DD is still awake and bouncing off the walls and if I go for a run now we won’t eat for another hour. So I’ll go tomorrow instead. I feel so guilty though it’s the first time I’ve missed a run since I started!

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 03/11/2018 20:11

I usually run once the kids are asleep I prefer the cover of drones!

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 03/11/2018 20:12

Darkness. Not drones.

DomesticAnarchist · 03/11/2018 21:19

I'm missing runs this week too. Couldn't do my usual Friday run as we went OUT straight from work. Meant to get up and run this morning but virusy-aches and sore legs from enthusiastic 'dancing' last night (far achier than from running).

I think I might skip W5R2 as the missed one. And do W5R3 tomorrow.

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 03/11/2018 21:28

That’s what I’m doing tomorrow too. I’ll be honest though I’m unsure as to what the benefit is of going back to alternative running and walking after it. I’m sure there is a reason for it though. Anyone enlighten me?

Jellycatspyjamas · 03/11/2018 23:11

It’s possible @5seconds I might just do that - though I’m sure the uphill bits are probably good for me in some weird, twisted way. It’s the joy of living on top of a hill in Scotland I suppose! I’ll see how it goes tomorrow and if I still can’t run all of week 1 I’ll drive to a flat route and try again.

DomesticAnarchist · 04/11/2018 07:18

I have been doing that @5SecondsFromWilding and @Jellycatspyjamas, and more frequently as the weeks have gone on. I figure I'll work on hills later!

DCs woke me up at 5:50 today, but I've still got an achey back/hips etc, which I think is still virus rather than muscular. Not sure if dosing up and running anyway is a good idea?

BigFatBloomers · 04/11/2018 09:15

Morning everyone
I am still running just not checked in for a while.

My running group has done w4 twice because lots of people were missing over half term. So w5 this week but I did w5r1 yesterday just to see how it was and it was ok.

I’m with you on the hills though jellycatspyjamas. I find them tough. The routes our group runs tend to have hills but I run my other runs on the flat. Our leader suggested, jokingly, that everyone wear a backpack loaded up to the heaviest person’s weight so they could see how much difference it makes and how much fitter you have to be to carry that extra weight around.

BigFatBloomers · 04/11/2018 09:17

I’m goong to need good music to power me through w5r3.
Can anyone recommend a good bit interesting Spotify playlist? The one I’ve been using is a bit bland.

DomesticAnarchist · 04/11/2018 14:29

I read an article not long ago about how much harder it is for people carrying a lot of weight to exercise.

I routinely carry my 13kg toddler around on my back, and walking is tough enough (especially stairs!), there's no way I could run with that extra weight (though apparently that would still be a healthy BMI?). So huge respect for anyone who doesn't have the physique of a marathoner!

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 04/11/2018 20:29

23 mins I ran tonight. Can’t bloody believe the progress. I could barely finish W1R1 I felt like it was the hardest thing in the world. Persuaded my husband to do it. He started week 2 today because he plays football a bit so he’s a bit fitter than me.

Only slight fly in the ointment is that my right knee is starting to get quite sore 😕

PhannyMcNee · 04/11/2018 20:34

Just checking in - finished w5 at the start of last week but haven’t been out since for various reasons.

Back on it tomorrow - not sure whether to repeat w5 or just carry on with w6? Any thoughts?

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 04/11/2018 20:48

I’d just repeat W5R3. If you can do that you’ll be fine surely

PhannyMcNee · 04/11/2018 21:00

Sounds like a plan - I’ll do that then I think.

FATEdestiny · 04/11/2018 21:26

I would move on to Week 6 @PhannyMcNee. R1 and R2 of week six are both split runs which would be easier than going straight back to the continuous run of W5R3.

does anyone have any suggestion for what next?

Massive well done @CanIKondo!! Have a look at the C25K Plus podcasts that the NHS offer. It follows exactly the same format and is for recent C25K graduates.

I’m unsure as to what the benefit is of going back to alternative running and walking after it. I’m sure there is a reason for it though. Anyone enlighten me?

@ThereGoesTheAlarm I think it is to do with the psychology of the new runner who doesn't think he/she can run. Faced with the first ever continuous run, it's easier to think of it as just one run, it one that you need to do. Them it'll be ok because you can go back to split runs. When you finish W6, it's more like you are psychologically ready to embrace running non-stop all the time because by then you know it wasn't a fluke.

PetraDelphiki · 04/11/2018 22:00

What I have discovered is that I really need to up my speed to help with aerobic fitness...went dancing and 2 consecutive jives nearly killed me :-(

Ho hum...

ThereGoesTheAlarm · 04/11/2018 22:04

Thanks Fate that makes sense.

Do what Fate says. She knows.

PhannyMcNee · 04/11/2018 22:11

Week 6 it is then @FateDestiny, thank you for your advice. You are an inspiration Flowers
