What causes clicky knees?

Asking on behalf of DD13 since she went on an outward bound last summer (poss relevant?) her knees regularly click whilst walking which is uncomfortable, but can actually hurt if walking up stairs and she says anything like a squat in PE no chance! Before I try to get her a doc appointment for the Easter hols I told her I shall ask the oracle (what me and her call mumsnet and she knows you’ve answered our questions for donkeys years)

Any info gratefully received thank you

Can't answer your question in relation to your daughter but mine have been clicky since I had my first child 10 years ago. My mum and my brother also have clicky knees so in my case it might be inherited

Not sure about knees but my hip sometimes clicks a lot - it's a tight muscle (or tendon or something) that rubs. Physio sorted it with an exercise for me to do. Doctor had no idea but sent me for an x-Ray.

No idea but if love to know. My mums knees always did it & mine have as far back as I can remember. Always gets an "oooohhh" from people around me.
