C25K really works

I finished week 7 day 1 today, and surprised myself by running for 25 minutes without stopping. I could have gone longer, too!

I'm not fast.

I haven't gone further than 3.6 km.

But my endurance has increased so much, even when I'm only managing to get out 1-2 times a week.

So for those of you just starting, or feeling like you've got that wall in week 5, keep going. You can do it!

I'm looking forward to managing a full 5 km one day, and I know I can do it because I've improved so much already.

Nice one parttime! Especially hard when juggling kids!

happytobemrsg · 04/05/2018 16:33

@BrassicaBabe I've just checked and our model
is Notdictrack c500 in case that helps! It's big but folds up

BrassicaBabe · 04/05/2018 17:10

Thank you happy. It all helps my research

Anyway today the sun shone and I managed 7k!! I might have even caught the sun a bit!

Hope everyone is enjoying their lovely sunny bank holiday runs. :) Stay hydrated. I went out at 8am and was roasting already.

Rowed 8k yesterday. Slowly. Rest day today. Rowing tomorrow. Planning on running this week on Wednesday and Friday. The treadmill at the army surplus auction ends tomorrow too.....

Can I ask, has anyone tried doing this when they are really very overweight? I’m a size 24-26, have done gyms in the past but couldn’t afford to keep the membership up. However, my DH and I are currently ttc so I really want to be healthier and fitter all round. Any advice?

TimeIhadaNameChange · 07/05/2018 17:17

Ilove - no actual advice other than maybe go and speak to your doctor about it? Or visit your local running shop and speak to them. 'They' do say one should consult a doctor before starting a new exercise regime, and, I suspect in your case it would be wise to ask about the stress you'd put on your joints etc. I mention a running shop to see if you could get your gait analysed, and buy shoes which match.

Other than that I don't see why you could start. You don't have to run quickly, in fact, for the running sections you should run at your slowest pace, then slow it down further, at least to begin with. It's far better that you manage to complete all the runs, however slowly, than have to resort to walking. (Obviously, it's not the end of the world if you can't, but that's what you're aiming for.)

Ilovewheelychairs · 07/05/2018 17:46

I think I'm going to start by getting out and walking a few times a week first. Then maybe start C25k when I'm a bit fitter to start with.

dragonwarrior · 07/05/2018 19:41

I love .... I was bigger, probably a size 22 when I started and done ok but I had already done 8 weeks of diet and walking 10k steps a day before I started couch 2 5k

athingthateveryoneneeds · 07/05/2018 20:22

I would definitely recommend walking to start, if your fitness level is low. But I'm not a doctor!

You might be surprised at how quickly you improve.

There is an app for 10 mins faster walking pace. I can't remember the name but that's good for anyone worried about being overweight to begin with.

I went out at 7.30 pm last night and it was lovely. I repeated week 5 run 1 as I was snotty from a cold and couldn't face the 8 min run.
I'm hoping to do run 2 tomorrow!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 08/05/2018 15:04

Just wanted to recommend some cross training for those of you running regularly. I've been noticing some stiffness in my legs and hips, so I found a yoga for runners video on Amazon prime video, www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B073RQX8H6/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?pi=PI_PJPrime-Sash-Extra-Large-2017&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1525788185&sr=1-11,TopLeft,0,0_AC_SX118_SY170&keywords=yoga+for+runners

I've only just looked at it today, but the stretches are ace. I had to go out before finishing it but I'll get to it later tonight.

Just finished week 2 run 2, and feeling good Smile

Ilove, I'm also very unfit and run very very slowly but it's been okish so far. I'm overweight too, I had increased my walking before starting this and found it helped. Starting with walks a few times a week will start to get you in the routine.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 09/05/2018 09:57

athing - funny you should mention that as I came across this the other day. I should probably give it a go, but I was put off yoga many years ago and have never got into it since.

I did do some cross training myself, of sorts - was out on the bike both Sunday and Monday. Didn't go far, about 4 miles in total, but Sunday's trip saw me go up a hill I never thought I would manage, so I was pleased with that. It does mean that my legs haven't had a rest since last Friday, though, and won't til this coming Friday (as I'm now running home from work Mon-Thurs) so I expect them to drop off sometime soon!

dragonwarrior · 09/05/2018 20:57

Completed run 3 of week 7 tonight so have now done 4 lots of 25 minute runs and feel like I can say "I went for a run" now. Ok it's a jog because I am only covering 3.5k in that time but for someone classed as "obese" I don't think it's too shabby that I have actually managed to get this far in 7 weeks. I've struggled this week as it has been so hot so my pace has slowed a bit in comparison to next week but I believe now that in just two more weeks I will be able to run for half hour and one day maybe manage a parkrun!

TimeIhadaNameChange · 10/05/2018 09:17

That's brilliant, dragonwarrior! I think your 'one day' parkrun is a lot closer than you imagine!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 10/05/2018 21:23

Definitely. I was obese when I started. Fitness isn't just for the slim. :)

8k today folks! Didn't stop. Didn't go fast but didn't stop 🤣. Took 58 mins. I think I enjoyed about 80% of it. Think that's a win!

TimeIhadaNameChange · 11/05/2018 16:39

That's brilliant, Brassica! Well done!

I'm not sure if I can go for a run tomorrow. I only ran home twice the week but on Wednesday's run the zombies came after me at the top of a hill so, naturally, I flew down it! Except I didn't literally fly and, instead, landed heavily on my left foot which jolted the hip, and it's still sore. It was nagging before then anyway, but it's been worse since. I fear running 5 miles on it tomorrow would not be wise. Sad

athingthateveryoneneeds · 11/05/2018 18:53

Definitely rest. Resting and healing from injury is important!

And congrats on the 8k!! Make sure you rest tomorrow. :)

dragonwarrior · 11/05/2018 20:21

Well done Brassica!

PartTimeProcrastinator · 13/05/2018 11:26

8k sounds fab Brassica, how long has it taken to work your way up to 8k?

Started week 3 today was nervous that I wouldn't manage the 3minutes but it was fine. Looking at the jumps in length of each run over the next few weeks it looks a little scary though!
