C25K really works

I finished week 7 day 1 today, and surprised myself by running for 25 minutes without stopping. I could have gone longer, too!

I'm not fast.

I haven't gone further than 3.6 km.

But my endurance has increased so much, even when I'm only managing to get out 1-2 times a week.

So for those of you just starting, or feeling like you've got that wall in week 5, keep going. You can do it!

I'm looking forward to managing a full 5 km one day, and I know I can do it because I've improved so much already.

Time I might be ready for a half marathon in September....I will think about this one. :D

athing - please do! It would be good to have someone suffering with me!!!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 30/04/2018 14:58

I'm so much slower than you , though. I have a lot to work on.

I'm not that fast. And anyway, it would be nice knowing that someone I knew was doing it too, even if we didn't run it together, per se. Just met up at the beginning, and afterwards. I found it really helped doing my first parkrun knowing there were two other MN newbies joining me in spirit somewhere in the country.

No pressure, though!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 30/04/2018 15:52

I'm keen to try it, I just need to work out logistics. :)

I'm running 25 minutes solidly now so am pleased with that as it's only been 5 weeks since I started (although I have completed week 6 now as run every other day not three times a week) but I still run so slow! I am averaging about 8:20 /km on the runs.... covering 4.3km in the whole podcast with warm up and cool down walks.... it's going to be a while until I can run 5k....

athingthateveryoneneeds · 01/05/2018 18:31

I generally jog through the warmups/cooldowns.

OP posts:
dragonwarrior · 01/05/2018 19:20

My "run" is a jog anyway so maybe once I have completed it I can do that. The last time I done c2 5k I got injured quite a bit and I think it was because I skipped the warm ups

athingthateveryoneneeds · 01/05/2018 19:23

I tend to go slow during the warmups, so it's just a bit faster than a walk.

I've had enough with this weather! Sad I want a treadmill at home. Don't want a really cheap one. Don't want a really expensive one. Got any tips or suggestions?

TimeIhadaNameChange · 02/05/2018 14:18

Brassica - could you try FB, Gumtree or the like?

Paperdolly · 02/05/2018 20:03

Around £100 down south for a decent used motorised one.

BrassicaBabe · 02/05/2018 21:30

You are right. Heaps of treadmills on FB and eBay. Just don't know which brand to go for....

2 seconds off my 5k PB! 2 whole seconds folks! Grin But on the upside I managed that despite doing some walking. I pushed the first km then had to walk, so 2km was slow. 33.32 mins.

C25K really works
happytobemrsg · 03/05/2018 14:04

Is it too late to join? I just did my first run! Phew. I'm running on a treadmill at home so my walk was 5 & my run was 8. Not sure if that's too slow or not 😐 I had DS in June 16 & there is only so long I can blame my weight on me having "just had a baby". I've started doing 2x PT sessions a week & hoping to add this to my exercise plan. My aim is to lose about 10lb through PT but get fitter through C25k. I get out of breath so quickly.

happytobemrsg · 03/05/2018 14:04

@BrassicaBabe we have a Nordictrack treadmill & it's fab. Not sure what it cost

happytobemrsg · 03/05/2018 14:08

I can't believe you're really thinking about doing a half marathon @athingthateveryoneneeds. Is that all down to C25k? DH has always wanted to do the Great North Run with me but it seems a pipe dream

TimeIhadaNameChange · 03/05/2018 14:39

happytobemrsg - for me the half marathon is definitely all down to the C25K. I started it last November, finished in Feb, followed it with a similar, but harder, programme and have just kept going. Honestly, if you'd told me when I started that I'd have signed up to a half by now I would have said you were ga-ga!

And don't worry about being too slow, it's better to go slower than the slowest you thought was possible and keep running for all the sections, than going faster and having to stop. Speed and endurance will come, just trust the programme.

happytobemrsg · 03/05/2018 15:28

@TimeIhadaNameChange the thought of running 30 minutes seems impossible! But I'm hoping that if I keep at it I'll be where you are Grin

athingthateveryoneneeds · 03/05/2018 15:48

Definitely down to c25k as well. I've been doing 10k runs recently, and according to the training programme I've been reading I'm more than ready to prepare for a half marathon.

@TimeIhadaNameChange I haven't signed up yet but I think I'm going to do it. :) I must admit the idea of a shiny medal has swayed me haha.

OP posts:
TimeIhadaNameChange · 03/05/2018 16:00

athing - yay! The thought of a shiny medal is great, isn't it? Saying that, if you sign up to Race at your Pace you can get one a month! Not quite the same as a 'proper' race, but it'll do me for starters!

happy - you'll get there! From what I can tell people either go for distance or speed. I'm not, and never will be, a fast runner. Honestly, I could almost walk quicker than I run! But I don't care, I'm happy to continue jogging slowly and increase my endurance rather than get my time down.

happytobemrsg · 03/05/2018 17:26

@TimeIhadaNameChange I get out of breath running for a bus! So I think I'd be happy with distance over speed (that's lucky!).

It's good to hear how the C25k has spurred you all on to do more running. I really hope I start to enjoy running and not just the feeling afterwards

PartTimeProcrastinator · 03/05/2018 19:34

Just finished week 1 and really proud of myself. Logistically it's been interesting as I've had DS in tow for 2 of the runs. If im going to stick at it I'm going to have to rely on convincing him to ride his bike while I run each time.

5k seems a long way off but feeling quite motivated!

happytobemrsg · 03/05/2018 19:43

@PartTimeProcrastinator well done!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 03/05/2018 19:47

Excellent, Part! One foot in front of t'other. :)

Thanks @happytobemrsg. Nordictrack are the ones I've been looking at as I used John Lewis for my research. Although there is a commercial Life Fitness one up for auction at our local army surplus. Tempted!!
