Weight/ strength exercise

Like many I am re invigorating my activity. I already run a tiny bit and do the odd bit of yoga so am going to try to up both plus a swim once a week.

Given I'm in my early 40s I'm aware I should do something strength related but have no idea what. I won't be joining the gym or anything and would prefer body weight exercises rather than having to buy equipment.

Primary motivation is health related here and ideally something short and sweet. I have a dodgy knee so always have to work around that.

Can anyone suggest anything/tell me I'm barking up the tree. I do have a kettlebell. Dd2 uses it as a teddy podium.

I would try YouTube. I like Fitness Blender - they do some videos using just bodyweight and some with equipment. Or search Kettle bell workout on YouTube. Yoga is quite good too for all over strength and balance.

I had similar aims last summer and I was looking at options, I joined a curves gym rather than a standard one and I love it as it is very unlike a gym socially, no men, no Posing, no mirrors etc!

I am 49 and do strength training 3 times a week at the gym with my fantastically fit female personal trainer who is 65 Grin

We use machone weights and also general exercise with 10lb medicine balls or own body weight such as The Plank.

If you want to do stuff at home maybe get some kettlebells?

PhyllisWig · 31/12/2017 16:01

Thanks for the replies. I may shove teddy off the kettlebell and take a fresh look at YouTube. I don't love fitness blender actually so if anyone has any suggestions for others I can try that would be great.

I might also take a look into the Curves thing. I've heard some positive stuff and I am looking for something to do outside the house. Maybe in the spring once the initial post Christmas rush has died down.

Have a look at Bodyfit by Amy on youtube - lots of different workouts - she is very good imo

My PT is uploading bodyweight workout videos to his instagram and youtube, he's really good and we quite often use just bodyweight during a session in the gym. PM me if you want his instagram/youtube name (I don't want to post here as it's too outing Grin)

Off the top of my head: Planks, push ups, squats, glute bridges, hamstring bridges and nordic hamstrings, lunges are all things you can do at home. You can incorporate the kettlebell into squats, glute bridges and lunges.
