Hi, is anyone open water swimming? I did my second open swim of the year this morning. Much much warmer than last week (even though it was only 1.5 degrees warmer it made a huge difference), I could at least feel my face whe I got out today! Did 900m last week, managed 1300m today. Wetsuit rubbing my neck is my only complaint!!

CorrigansDoorKnob · 06/05/2018 06:13

Great to hear all the swimming going on. I had a great time at the Masters Australia Nationals. The racing was actually really good fun. Managed to tumble turn the whole 400m free without totally wiping out, which was an achievement in itself.

I’m hoping to swim through the winter this year and would like to aim for a 10k lake swim in November. Just need to get DH on board...

SingingAvocado · 10/05/2018 11:41

Sounds very impressive, Corrigans. Bee well done on open water swimming. I'm still not brave about that.

2km done this morning.

ScaredPAD · 10/05/2018 15:38

Well done everyone!! I've done 33 and 44 (!!) Lengths this week. I'm still anxious in lanes when it's not just me but I'm on such a high from the actual swimmi mg!

At some point I'll have to focus on technique or something but not sure where to start with that. They have a box of "things" you can use. For now I'm just enjoying the sensation of lengths tbough:)

tizwozliz · 10/05/2018 16:18

I very nearly bought myself a flex2 fitbit for swim tracking earlier in the week but after reading mixed reviews decided against it.

14km swum since I started counting 10 days ago

Tangarine · 10/05/2018 21:00

Hello swimmers, I hope you won't mind me using your thread to ask if any of you swim with music, and if so whether you could recommend an MP3 player? I've looked on Amazon and there is a bewildering choice with huge price variations.

I was at the gym tonight with my music on and it occurred to me that I might enjoy swimming more if I could listen to music while doing lengths.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

lljkk · 11/05/2018 04:42

I couldn't get on with FINIS Duo player... the sound was tinny & I don't have right service for downloads; plus-side: very easy to use. Other people like it fine, my son thought it was tres cool. I think my face is odd shape b/c of the goggle problems I have, too.

I finally figured out what I need from goggles in order to have a good fit (!). Only took 27 years. My trusty grey goggles are finally failing but at least I have a recipe how to replace this time. I only have about... 5 ? excess pairs at moment (oops).

Quiet 1.8k yesterday.

SkiGirl007 · 11/05/2018 19:26

Missed my usual Monday swim due to the bank hol but got a swim coaching session in last night. Hoping to go Sat morn if it’s not too busy in the lanes, it’s abit hit n miss sometimes it’s quiet other times 6-8 in the lane which I struggle with.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 14/05/2018 11:47

I am on the last day of my enforced week of rest.
Feels like it's gone on for ever!
I have noticed that 1) I have more time for other stuff 2) I have to actually plan to wash my hair 3) my laundry has gone right down and 4) it didn't actually kill me.

All being well, back on it tomorrow!

SkiGirl007 · 14/05/2018 13:17

Hope your body has responded well to rest week rights. My DD has a suspected broken toe and so trying to do enforced rest and is hating it. She’s grumpy & snappy not helped by SATs week when she could really do with a good swim session to relax.
Plan to get to the pool tonight.

andalittlebitofpixiedust · 14/05/2018 16:17

Hello all, I was here earlier but dropped off. I managed 1.5k in the Swimathon, absolutely delighted with myself about that! And have managed for two weeks in a row to swim on a Friday while my daughter has her swimming lesson, so delighted with myself about that too.

Finally got around to using shampoo to prevent fog on my goggles and OH MY GOODNESS what a revelation! I could see clearly the entire 25 min, no fogging at all, and I'm sure I swam faster as a result Grin I just popped a blob of shampoo into each lens, wiped it around, let it dry overnight and then buffed it off the next day. Miracle.

Am trying to do more exercise generally during a somewhat unsettled time, so can't attend the pool more regularly... but I did little bike ride yesterday and an exercise video this morning so hurrah for me!

ButterfliesandMoths · 14/05/2018 16:31

Hi everyone. I haven't been swimming for 30 years but bought myself a swimsuit and went, I couldn't swim continuously, I'd swim a couple of widths then rest. I was totally exhausted after. But feel like I really achieved something. I'm going again this week. Hopefully over time my stamina will improved.

SkiGirl007 · 14/05/2018 21:10

Ohh I may try the shampoo trick in my Google’s pixie well done on your Swimathon.

Welcome butterflies keeping trying and it will build up.

I had a lovely lane to myself tonight it was fab, did 1.1k before being kicked out as I got in a bit late. Tried a variation on my FC pull hinging more on the elbow under water but it seemed to make my shoulder hurt more instead of using the bigger lat muscles hmmm I know the underwater pull is the next key to me getting faster as the coach said my leg kick, head/breathing& arm recovery above the water look ok..I was googling you-tube last night for tips Grin I will try again Thursday.

ScaredPAD · 15/05/2018 03:14

Ooh I will try the shampoo truck although not in time for tonight's swim.

I'm finding myself looking forwards to being able to get out for a swim. My house is turning into chaos (I'm not great at housewokr) and it's so good to escape it!

SingingAvocado · 15/05/2018 09:16

Hi SkiGirl – my DD is writing SATs too. Welcome butterflies (sounds like you are doing great) and welcome back Pixie. Did an amazing (for me!) time today. 62 lengths / 2046m in 38m02s, about a minute faster than usual. I realised that I've finally managed to shave some time off backstroke. I alternate backstroke with crawl and usually the backstroke length takes about 3s longer than crawl but today it was taking about 1s longer. Not sure what has changed or whether I will ever be able to repeat this feat!

tizwozliz · 15/05/2018 09:46

I bought a new swimsuit, felt fine trying ob in the shop but as soon as I got horizontal in the pool found a seam rubbed in an awkward place. Luckily it was relatively cheap but back to looking for a replacement. 2.1km this morning

SingingAvocado · 15/05/2018 10:03

tizwoz I've put Vaseline on bits that rub and that seems to have sorted that out. I got a new swimsuit this week too but it is identical to my old one so nobody but me knows! The elastic had started to go on the old one but it had done me nearly 2 years of swimming 3 times a week.

SkiGirl007 · 15/05/2018 11:00

That’s an impressive swimsuit avocado! Mine only seem to last 3-4mths. Super fast swim too with the backstroke. Swimming seems to be such small incremental changes in speed...I know I’m getting faster but it doesn’t feel like it when I see folk power past me with their smooth F.C..Hmm yet at the beginners coaching sess I’m going past alot of others so I know it’s getting there abit slowly. I should be kinda to my o/w body Grin i am going longer though in the pool so stamina has massively upped.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 17/05/2018 15:41

My creatine kinase levels are FINE after a week off exercise. Bring It On!

Hoorah. I might be swimming in a lake tomorrow evening and I might be signing up for a swim along the River Cam (hopefully WITH the current!) in July.

SkiGirl007 · 17/05/2018 22:09

That’s good rights hope the lake swimming goes well. I’d like to try that.

Had a good swim with my DD 11yr tonight she was giving me a couple of good F.C. coaching tips on lifting my head up abit and I need to sort out my lazy left arm. She spotted more things in 10mins than the coaching sessions I’ve been trying out the last few weeks!

andalittlebitofpixiedust · 20/05/2018 09:52

Managed a short swim on Fri night. Didn't count lengths as I decided to just swim consistently for as long as I had available, just over 20 min in the end. Felt good. :) :) Love swimming.

BalloonFlowers · 21/05/2018 07:12

Glad you're back excerising, rights. Must feel good?

1.5km this morning done. BUT my swim buddy is leaving. What are people's thoughts on solo swimming? The pool is deep both ends - so no putting feet down, and no life guard. There is a cleaner/ maintenance person there most of the time, and it is on the path to the back door of the gym, so people about, but they can't necessarily swim. It's an open air pool. Thoughts about swimming on my own?

ScaredPAD · 21/05/2018 07:55

I really wouldn't swim solo but im v risk adverse. It's highly unlikely you had a random fit/ got bad cramp/migraine /something mid swim but if it ever happened you wouldn't want to be on your own.

ScaredPAD · 21/05/2018 07:57

Wow skigirl your daughter sounds amazing!

I'd love some coaching sessions when I've list a bit of weight/ speed up a bit myself. There is a coached adult swim at my leisure centre but I think currently they're likely to all be faster than me!!
