I think swimming is back on. Jumped in briefly with the kids earlier, and everyone managed 15 mins, so going to try and fit in a midday swim next week, and see if I can do 1km without turning blue!!!

SkiGirl007 · 05/03/2018 14:28

Got back in the pool this morning did half hour mix of drills and F.C., felt good after nearly 2wks out.

Hope the snow has melted with you too, our pool & schools were shut for 2days but being in the SW it all melted as fast as it came.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 05/03/2018 15:35

Phew....first swim for ages it seems!

I ran a half marathon yesterday so was really looking forward to
having a good old stretch and relax.

Shame the pool was full of muppets. Everyone had just spread out evenly in the lanes regardless of speed. It was busy. Lots of people didn't know the lane rules. I really wish the life guards would do a better job.

SingingAvocado · 06/03/2018 09:31

Things are almost back to normal here. Quite a lot of people we know have been without water and we've offered showers. Some schools shut too because of no water. But the leisure centre is running as normal and lots of people seem to be going there for showers!

I managed to hit someone this morning! She was resting at the end of the pool and I finished a length of backstroke, launched into front crawl and as I brought my arm round I hit her face. She shouted 'ow' and I stopped and apologised profusely, asked if she was ok, said I hadn't seen her (the truth) but she just waved me on …

SandLand · 08/03/2018 09:51

Yeah! First swim of 2018 done.
1km in just under 30 mins.
It was freezing ! Actually I'm sure it wasn't freezing, but it felt pretty cold! It's only going to get hotter from now on.

SingingAvocado · 08/03/2018 13:57

Well done SandLand. What sort of temperature is your Springtime? An outdoor pool does sound blissful …

SandLand · 08/03/2018 16:31

Hitting 30 this week. Got 20C more rises before it hits a peak. If your lucky, you have a chiller. Or you swim in a bath tub over the summer. Unfortunatly I get the bathtub --if not high tailed it to my Mums in the UK for some sensible weather)

tizwozliz · 12/03/2018 19:52

After a 3 year break I'm trying to improve the swimming again. A bit disheartening to see how much speed I've lost but I can see some improvements over the past month.

I'm trying to swim 3/4 times a week for 45 minutes to an hour. I've just been doing the same sort of routine so far but think I need to start mixing it up a bit.

SkiGirl007 · 12/03/2018 21:15

Yah first time I logged 60L in a few years, took me 45mins today but I was swimming comfortably. I was shattered an hour later after cycling home Smile though.

SingingAvocado · 15/03/2018 11:10

Welcome tizwoz. I do the same thing each session and it suits me, but I guess mixing it up makes it more interesting! Well done ski. And cycling home too is really impressive. I pushed myself to do 45 mins today instead of around 40 mins and managed an extra 10 lengths.

tizwozliz · 15/03/2018 11:20

Normally do something like

Warm up (600m)
Mix of breasttroke, crawl, crawl with pullbuoy and kicking

Main set (1000m)
10 x 100m

Warm down (400m)
Drills and backstroke, what exactly i do depends on business of the lane.

This fits nicely into a 40 minute session for me.

tizwozliz · 15/03/2018 19:37

I need to get a new swimsuit, the chlorine is killing mine. I used to swim in a UV filtered pooland it was noticeable how much better swimsuits lasted. They seem so expensive these days, I miss the speedo outlet that we used to have.

SkiGirl007 · 15/03/2018 20:25

Squeezed in (between work & post school trip pu) another 1500m today felt good got in the zone and only two of us in the lane.

SingingAvocado · 19/03/2018 12:21

Tizwoz I've got a good, and very cheap, costume from Proswimwear (online). It has lasted me a good 18 months so far.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 19/03/2018 20:26

Swam Today!
Had awful week last week and couldn't leave house.

SkiGirl007 · 19/03/2018 21:27

Had snow day and cabin fever so was good to get out and swim tonight just struggling with injury at the moment which is really frustrating.

Hope the swim helped rights

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 20/03/2018 09:08

What's the injury Ski?

It really did help. I have really slipped from my goal to swim twice a week and was almost leaning towards ditching it in favour of running, which is so much easier to fit it. But it felt good and it does me A LOT of good so I feel boosted by that. I ain't no quitter!

I just need to not give myself a hard time if I can't get to the pool. It's hard as a single parent working full time.

SkiGirl007 · 20/03/2018 17:28

I’ve had a weakness in hip flexor since emerg C-sec yrs ago scar tissue which has impacted my running, I’ve had a 4wk break from running but still getting issues. I’ve tried strengthening stuff over the years and normally swimming is ok but it was still aggravating it last night I’m just fed up with it and really miss the buzz from running 😬hopefully more rest off impact exercise will help just abit gutted as I’d got up to Half Marathon level and can feel my fitness slipping away again arrhhh!

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 21/03/2018 09:01

That sucks. Sounds like you had quite a traumatic birth experience.
The thing with running is that there's no leeway really, it's high impact and doesn't allow for much variation in how you move.

If you can resolve the swimming issue you WILL be able to keep your fitness up. Don't panic.

SkiGirl007 · 21/03/2018 09:20

Thanks rights I like swimming and have started to push myself further which is a nice achievement but running does give that lovely buzz Smile I did manage 5k rowing in the gym last week which didn’t aggravate it so I’ll try again on Sat I just begrudge paying extra £6.50 to go as it’s not included in my swim membership. Hoping to get back on the bike too now the snow is hopefully on it’s way out!

flamingnoravera · 23/03/2018 20:32

I swam today, first time in a fortnight. It was bliss. I tried out a pull buoy for my legs in crawl, omg! I loved it. I'm going to buy one, I had no idea of how effective they are at helping to improve technique.
I'm intending to return to 3-4 times a week now the snow is gone and holidays are here.

SkiGirl007 · 24/03/2018 11:33

I like the pullbuoy too nova it’s really helped me to improve my technique but I have to swap it out every 4L or my back starts getting bit sore.
Had a good low impact session in the gym rowing mostly then half hour swim. Felt good to start feeling human again after a cold/sore throat thing this week. Hoping the flipping snow doesn’t come back at Easter I just want some dry sunny days now as my bike really needs to go out Smile

lljkk · 24/03/2018 19:09

I didn't get on with a pullbuoy. I often imagine trying to get coaching & being thoroughly depressed by it, tbh.

Anyway, Do you guys think there's aerobic "memory" in swimming? What I mean is I went to pool with zero enthusiasm tonite, had to grit my teeth to get started in cold water, total plod mode for first 6-10 lengths. And then I just switched into it. Like my body took over, pushing my psyche aside, saying "No problem, I can do this." A lot of runners talk about the first 5 minutes being horrid but can really enjoy the run thereafter. That's how I was this evening (& some others).

Still got out at usual 50 minutes point, though. Didn't fancy any extra lengths!!

tizwozliz · 24/03/2018 19:18

Managed to get to the pool 4 times this week but it's been a bit of a mixed bag with busy sessions. Makes it difficult to do anything but plod along which doesn't do much for my fitness at all.

BalloonFlowers · 27/03/2018 12:05

tiz my zoggs "aqualast" fabric suit is lasting very well compared to previous costumes. I do tend to buy last year's patterns to reduce the cost.
