Aqua gloves sound cool?! Are they to make it harder to swim and therefor strengthen and tone you up? My DD got flippers for Xmas and was practicing her butterfly kick which she quite enjoyed at the weekend. I was just hoping the lifeguard would allow them but they didn’t say anything I think as she was “swimming properly” not just playing about. They don’t let some stuff get used in public sessions.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 08/01/2018 21:36

That's exactly it Ski
As I run I don't really need to tone my legs up and in fact like to relax them in the pool, so working my upper body is really good for me.

Mind you the time I saved cos I was swimming more quickly was absorbed by the time it took me to keep taking them on and off.

flamingnoravera · 08/01/2018 23:01

Thanks Avocado I will read it when it's released. I know it's happening all over the place. Our problem is that our pool is not in a nice area that might attract a cafe or restaurant society (no space either), it needs a new boiler, it's built on asbestos, needs significant roof and other maintenance work, serves protected groups in the main (so no money) and has no parking either. But we love it because it's local, it's friendly, it's 80 years old and it's pure function over form or beauty.

I didn't swim today, my new job has cut me back from 4 x week to only 2 :( I will cut out the evening glass of wine on Monday in favour of a swim.

I just found out our pool has a club session one night a week for naturists. I didn't know that. I've only been swimming there for 20 years!

Flippetydip · 09/01/2018 10:04

I'm not sure I fancy swimming naked in the local pool flamingnora - are you going to go?!

I have my first swimming lesson tonight (group session) - stroke improvement. I'll let you know how it goes.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 09/01/2018 10:14

I am not at all ewwwww about naked body swimming with respect to bodily fluids etc, I mean a swim suit doesn't stop all that, does it, but I really, really don't want to be behind a naked person doing breaststroke if my head is under water, and I don't want to see anyone's willy bobbing about thanks!

Our pool does a coached session on a Wednesday evening. I can't go [pout]

SandLand · 09/01/2018 10:18

Happy New Year.

Too cold for swimming atm. Running instead.
Aiming to manage some front crawl and some 2km swims once it warms up, and before it becomes a bath tub (hopefully March-June swimming).
Will see how that goes before setting a Sept-Nov target.

SkiGirl007 · 09/01/2018 21:26

Just thinking ewwwe at the naked swimming Grin I’m with rights don’t mind the human body but don’t want the view when swimming Smile I can’t swim naked anyway it’s too uncomfortable with big boobs Grin they float too much!!

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 09/01/2018 21:59

In aqua glove news - my back has been aching like a bastard today!

ForalltheSaints · 10/01/2018 20:59

I have swum naked in pools at spas abroad- one of them has a pool that could be 40 yards long. It is pleasant, though of course you will not be bumping into your next door neighbour or boss.

SingingAvocado · 11/01/2018 10:30

The idea of swimming naked with any of my crowd of 'swim friends' that I've got to know at the pool sounds like the stuff of nightmares!

Fast Man has a name – he introduced himself today. I said I was pleased that he hadn’t been lapping me lately but he said he’d felt a bit sluggish in January. So I replied that therefore I wasn’t any faster, he was just going slower! Managed 2km in 39m6s today so he must have been making me go a bit quicker!

flamingnoravera · 11/01/2018 20:13

I'm not at all keen on the idea of naked swimming in a pool with strangers.

At night, In a warm sea with a partner is fine but that's as far as I'd go.

Flippetydip · 12/01/2018 08:47

Avocado your time is insanely quick by my very sedate standards.

I had my first swimming lesson on Tuesday night. It was very good although I am now so obsessed with trying to get my number of strokes-to-do-a-length down that it took me forever to do 50 lengths last night and I'm still using way too many strokes!

SandLand · 12/01/2018 10:06

rights do you run and swim for similar times? Trying to work out how far I should be running- struggling with 5km atm, but part of that is a mental battle - third time past my front door is my "give it up and go in" point.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 12/01/2018 10:19

Nope Sand, my running sessions are longer, sometimes much longer.

I run 4 times a week: roughly 5 miles, club intervals/speed, 6 or 7 miles and then a long one at the weekend.

The 5 mile is the quickest and takes around 40 mins. Long run will be anything from about 1hr 15 to 2hrs depending.

I swim 1K twice a week and that takes about 25 mins.

Do you have a 5K loop which doesn't involve going past your door repeatedly? Or go out and back for 2.5K

SingingAvocado · 12/01/2018 10:29

It has taken me 18 months to get there Flippity! I started in the slow lane and have worked my way up. My neighbour, who I give a lift to the pool, is obsessed by number of strokes per length too. We have a 33m pool and he says he does about 25 and wants to get it down to 23. I'm too busy counting what length I'm on to count strokes too!

Impressed with your running, Rights. My ankle still niggles (the reason I started swimming in the first place) so I haven't gone back to it but the best I used to do was 5km in about 35 mins.

SandLand · 12/01/2018 11:12

Unfortunately, because of where I live, I can only go 2m(eters) south, 250m east or west, and 500m north before I need to turn...... and there is school in that lot that is easier just to avoid at the best time for me to run. It was much more motivating running in the UK where I could go for several km before turning round!

However, you are in a different league to me on the running! My UK target was occasional 10km in less than 65 mins...... i think i just need to overcome the mental block, and get some more kms under my belt. Thankyou for the info.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 12/01/2018 11:20

Running is my thing.

How about mixing it up a bit, so that you do steady for one lap, push it for the second, steady for the third etc. or even mix it up during one lap, so push East, turn, steady until the next turn.

It makes it varied and will be pretty effective in getting you more fit.

Yes, to improve you really just have to go out and do it! But the good thing with running (and swimming) is that you pretty quickly see an improvement if you are consistent.

Good luck!

You both (avo and sand) run reasonable times, nothing to be scoffed at. Be proud!

CorrigansDoorKnob · 14/01/2018 02:17

Hello swimmers! I was out of the pool over winter as I could only manage once a week, and that wasn’t enough to maintain good swim fitness. Now it’s summer and i’m back and loving it. I’ve got my mojo back and my times are improving nicely. I’ve managed 11.5k this week.

Who wanted advice about a 10k Swim? I swam a 5k lake swim last year after having my first swimming lesson since primary school approx 12 months prior. I may have a few bits of information which might be useful?

flamingnoravera · 14/01/2018 09:16

I've been laid up with the awful flu this last week. I'm not going to be able to swim till at least Friday which will be nearly two weeks since my last swim. I'm feeling miserable and a bit anxious about how much of my fitness I've lost.

SandLand · 14/01/2018 10:39

flaming you will pick it up again quite quickly. For temperature reasons, I swim March to November, and run October to April. The first few session of anything are really tough, and then it's like the muscle memory comes back. Being ill is different, but I'm sure similar will apply.

SkiGirl007 · 14/01/2018 14:02

Hope you feel better soon nora my folks were floored by the flu virus for 3wks, it’s horrid. I’ve been in bed last couple days with heavy cold missing my exercise fix too Sad I’d had a flying start this year to swim & run training so hoping 7-10d out won’t put me back too much, as my first event is mid Feb.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 15/01/2018 08:51

I am back on track for my 2 swims a week. I've used the aqua gloves twice now but will skip them today as I can really feel how much effort they are taking which for me isn't my priority for swimming, rather it's a way to relax my muscles from the battering they get from all the road running.

Glad to be in the pool today rather than running in this pissing weather!

SingingAvocado · 15/01/2018 09:19

I lost count this morning and did 60 lengths instead of 62. A bit annoying!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 15/01/2018 09:24

Hello all,
Have been doing my 1k 4 x a week.

Any tips from the speedy among you?

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 15/01/2018 09:29
