We are a bit cut off in the designated forum so here's a shiny new thread to populate.

Hello to anyone that hasn't ventured over to The Weights Room but is lifting/resistance training.

I was going to ask if any of you lifting ladies were cardio dodgers like me, but I don't want to derail this thread, so I am going to start another thread.

Tomorrowisanewday · 08/09/2017 15:37

Me!!! I'm currently being bribed by my PT - "do at least 20 minutes cardio on days you're here yourself, and give me evidence, and we'll focus on all weights the day you're here with me"

Oogle · 08/09/2017 15:43

I'm very, very new to this and I'm only just getting into weights with my PT and I love it. I can't wait to progress further as at the moment we're sticking with 15kg bar on deadlifts, bent over row, lunges, shoulder press, 18kg dumbbell for squats and 30kg on bench press as I keep trapping a nerve in my neck so we're taking it slowly but I'm hooked. I managed 70kg on leg press yesterday, before that I hadn't got above 60! I have never loved going to the gym before but now I hate having rest days Grin

I also dodge cardio. I'll do 500m sprint rows with the PT to finish a set and I always use the x-trainer to warm up/cool down but otherwise I'm a complete avoider.

FindoGask · 08/09/2017 15:46

I used to be a cardio dodger, as I didn't want to derail the gain train basically. I only lift every other day so I wanted to use my rest days to actually rest (apart from walking and cycling and stuff).

But I missed the lung-bursting sweat that I can only get from cardio, plus I needed to shift a bit of weight, so now I do 2 more cardio-focused days in amongst my lifting days.

You're lifting more on bench than on deadlift? Are you sure it's 30kg?

The opposite. I started lifting to support my cardio (netball, marathons.....)

I used to just do 20 mins HITT x3 per week.
I used to do intervals on the stepper (30 secs full blast, 40 secs almost stopped) it was pretty mental and actually quite fun!

NC4now · 08/09/2017 17:10

In theory I do two spin classes a week. In practice....Confused

FindoGask · 08/09/2017 19:04

Urgle I forgot to say - that's an awesome squat you've got going on! I dream of 100kg but it sounds like it was well within your grasp. You'll get there again in no time I'm sure.

Urglewurgle · 08/09/2017 21:49

Aw thanks @FindoGask! I think if I'd tried at the beginning of the session I might have made it, as it was I went down and had no up at all! Just carried on going down, thank God for the safety bars! I was trying to out-squat DP! Grin

After that I was mostly in a calorie deficit so not in a position to really try again. Hopefully will get a trainer when I'm back in the gym.

JustGettingStarted · 08/09/2017 22:21

Does anyone struggle because they prefer equipment that's a bit rare?

I like to use the Roman chair (lower back extension) for booty gainz, but few gyms have them.

And even rarer is a safety squat bar, which is helpful if your shoulders don't like the barbell for back squats.

The independent gym near me has both. I think I'm going to have to do my leg days there, even though I love my main gym for everything else.

Oogle · 09/09/2017 07:33

Maid, yes I'm sure. My PT refers to it as deadlift (I think, there's every chance I haven't been listening properly 😂) but I don't lower the bar back to the floor after a single lift, I do 10 reps then straight on to bent over row and my hamstrings scream by the end of it Smile

I'm really very, very new to this. As in a few weeks. I have no idea if I'm using the right terminology or anything.

FindoGask · 09/09/2017 07:47

Could be that your PT is making sure you've got your form nailed before putting any weight on the bar, Oogle. Reassuring if so, I see a lot of dodgy deadlifts at the gym even under PT supervision.

Never heard of a Roman chair, Just! I do weighted hyperextensions on a back extension bench - luckily Pure has one of those. I balance a Swiss ball on top of a normal bench to do reverse hypers.

Oogle · 09/09/2017 08:07

Possibly Findo, plus I'm very unfit 😂 My arms look amazing already though so I'm really pleased, it's just the rest of me we've got to sort out!

FindoGask · 09/09/2017 11:22

That's great! It's so motivating when you start to see progress. My arms are strong but not especially defined looking - except in the starkest of overhead lighting.

Bodypump and Kettlebell doubler this morning (cf earlier comments about adding in cardio).

NC4now · 09/09/2017 11:39

Oogle, I only started deadlifting a few weeks ago and have to take any new movement slowly, so I'm only on 30kg.
Leg press I've been doing a few months and I'm doing 200kg, so I'm hoping to build up my deadlifts. Those are my two favourites 😃

Tomorrowisanewday · 09/09/2017 13:55

NC4now - legpress is my current favourite - I've just gone up to 170kg, still cant believe I'm managing that!

Strongbeatsskinny · 09/09/2017 22:38

Cardio never dodged I'm on a comp prep at the moment and it's very much on the agenda. Hate it with passion but it has its place in fat loss I suppose.

JustGettingStarted · 10/09/2017 07:49

What sort of competition are you prepping for?

Strongbeatsskinny · 10/09/2017 08:32

Wbff

FindoGask · 10/09/2017 08:40

What's that - bodybuilding? Exciting! What class are you in?

FindoGask · 10/09/2017 08:42

I've started following a 55 year old bodybuilder on facebook after stumbling across her blog (her page is Lifting My Spirits I think)- she only started a couple of years ago having been overweight and struggling with health issues for years. She's pretty cool.

JustGettingStarted · 10/09/2017 11:39

Oh she sounds awesome!

JustGettingStarted · 10/09/2017 11:42

I found her Facebook and here's her blog:
