Mens mountain bike recommendations

Thinking of a bike for DH Christmas.
Any recommendations? He does not currently bike but he's interested in getting a mountain bike.
Don't want to spend ££££ incase it never comes out of the garage, don't want to get something too cheap either!

Cheap bikes are unpleasant to ride so definitely wouldn't come out of garage.
To get a good fit, best to choose own.
I think there are better Xmas presents, tbh.

Where do you live?

Because we found buying secondhand the best way to get a good brand (Giant, dawes, Trek etc) at affordable price. Unicycles in Loughborough for example have a huge selection and you can try them out. If you are in the Midlands. Otherwise a local hire place may sell some off at the end of the season.
