Half Marathon thread

Anyone up for a bit of half m support?

I'm registered to run my first half m in early September.

I'm struggling a bit with motivation tbh. I think I peaked too soon - could have done it 6 weeks ago. I've got time to get prepared though - it's 8 weeks away and I'm not starting from scratch. The most important thing for me is to keep up the strength work or my knees go kerboom.

Anyone else?

moggle and mines you can do this, picture running over that finish line feel the buzz you'll be grinning ear to ear and that medal will be in your grasp to look at forever when you feel the going is tough you'll have proof you did it !!

RMC123 · 24/08/2017 21:15

I bloody did it! Just over 9 miles and hilly. Felt much better than I thought. Have just sat down with my running buddy and looked at the course route . Have run much worse hills. I CAN DO THIS!!

shortaris1 · 24/08/2017 21:21

RMC hope you did it for me. My foots still too sore to run.

Moggle this is just half marathon nerves talking. You can bloody well do this! Can you run with someone? Park run or local club so you don't drop out? That's massively helped me.

Mines get a specialist physio referral! We don't HAVE to put up with this. I'm bloody sick of washing kit and all the dishes from meal prep but I'm a stone down from my heaviest and feel like a different person so its worth it.

minesapintofwine · 24/08/2017 21:21

RMC well done!

minesapintofwine · 24/08/2017 21:23

moogle I much prefer morning runs too. Struggling to do them in the school holidays (dh works nights) and I think it's messing me up!

RMC123 · 24/08/2017 21:32

Thanks everyone!! Moggle I so need tough love!!

RMC123 · 24/08/2017 21:34

Short sorry about your footConfused hope it heals soon

shortaris1 · 24/08/2017 22:21

Well done RMC you sneaked in there. And thanks!

mogglemoo · 25/08/2017 06:15

RMC: a very well done. Woke up this morning to this excellent news and actually makes me (almost) excited to go out running this morning. I hope this gives you confidence.

Shortaris: running with someone is a definite no. Even on races that I've run with my sister, we have a rule: 'Start together, have the celebratory beer together'. We ran a 10K together where our paces didnt match and she kept barking at me to keep moving, and keep moving faster. It was my least favourite run I've ever done. For me, it's not about PBS, more enjoying the day. I'm quite introverted, and like (and people like me better) when I do it on my own. 😜

I won't give up, I promise. I'm just really fed up compared to the elation when I was running 40k per week. It feels like I've peaked too early, but that's not the case. I'm disappointed that I have to drag my arse out when I feel that, because I've upped my distance, I should be bouncing out of bed and totally skooshing every run, but it's still haaaarrrrdddd (sounding like a whiny teenager).

Thank you for your support. I aim to go out today and do 8k.

Will let you know how I get on.

💐

Keep running everyone! A short run is better than no run.
I am don't for this week, new trainers arriving today so going to test them out on Monday morning on a long run. Aiming for 10 - 11 miles. I have written it on here so now I have to do it!
Really motivating reading about everyone else's runs and always nice to know that everyone else has the same doubts and worries, I genuinely thought it was just me.

mammymammyIRL · 25/08/2017 09:30

Well done RMC hoping to smash 8 miles myself this weekend.

moggle unless the person has very similar pace to you it doesn't work. I didn't bring my headphones on Sunday as my friend had told me she wasn't up to her usual speed, turns out she was. They're coming with me on all long runs from now on company or not.

Kalenji Hydration Pack these appear to be back in stock but they're not taking orders until Sept 1st as their ecommerce dept is on holidays I think. I'm also looking at a a hi viz running bib for darker evenings and pinless things to hold on my numbers instead of safety pins, run mummy run sell them.

The trainer tags are fabulous.

2012 the accountability of this thread is brilliant isn't it?

mogglemoo · 25/08/2017 10:53

8k-✅

And with a sprint finish of about 100m, so pretty pleased.

It was hard, but knowing I couldn't come back here and say I hadn't managed, when RMC did so well last night, allowed me to keep going. In fact, my last 500m were great- finally felt in my stride and legs didn't hurt; I need to remember that it takes that many k's to ease myself in.

Going to try for 20k on Sunday. 😳 Not sure how that'll go, but needs must.

Oh, and I've entered in the Glasgow 10K at the beginning of October. The HM has sold out (had told myself that if I enjoyed the GNR I would enter, but it wasn't meant to be), the 10K will mean that I need to keep some form of training going. Normally I train for a race, run it, then not run for several months. I want this to change and still be able to run a 10K at the weekend at Christmas.

RMC123 · 25/08/2017 10:59

Yeah! Well done Moggle. My plan now is 3 miles on Saturday, 7 miles on Monday, then away for a few days but final big run 11 miles on Friday. Will taper off with a couple of shorter runs before race day.
Now I have a plan I actually feel so much better and for the first time I am really looking forward to it where as up until now I have been dreading it.

Hoolit · 25/08/2017 14:22

Well done RMC

HRHPrincessMegan · 25/08/2017 15:24

Well done everyone for getting those runs in. I'm having a spectacularly poor week run wise. I did 5 miles yesterday and that's it! I am also eating total crap - fox's red velvet crunchy cream anyone? Help!

minesapintofwine · 26/08/2017 00:27

Well done moggle yay for getting your mojo back! 👑

I've been chatting to my sil tonight. She runs loads faster than me and I've trying to convince her that although we will definitely start the half together and go to the pub after she must go off and get the time she deserves and not let me slow her down. All along she's been saying we will stay together but now has said she will go off if she wants to go faster. It is absolutely the right thing and I'm pleased she's agreed to do it if needs to but it didn't half make me feel shit about my slow pace lol 😂. Not really though I'm still gunning for it!

Pikachuwithyourmouthclosed · 26/08/2017 06:36

Hello everyone. Some brilliant running going on. I'm v impressed with everyone.

Somehow in the course of training for this half m I have become slower, less fit, heavier, and less good at running.

My run is one week tomorrow. My knees are extremely painful. I've run three times so far in the whole of August. Ahh well. Feckit. I'll tape up my knees, knock back some Voltarin, and do my best.

Just ran 14k today with strapped knees and it was okay I think. Fairly good time considering the hills.

randomsabreuse · 26/08/2017 07:20

After a great start to the week I have a cold. Raging snots so not doing Parkrun today - Will try for a little toddle later and keep tomorrow's 8 miles under review.

Typical - I was actually enjoying running this week and had a bit of a breakthrough with a lot of it local Strava segment hills - actually 'ran' up them for the first time - moment of suspension maintained even though actual pace very slow!

Every one sounds like they're doing fab to me.

New shoes was great for me - I ended up with bright orange as they are cheaper (and men's size 6 bizarrely) - incipient heel pain in abeyance so pleased about that.

mammymammyIRL · 26/08/2017 07:29

I'd an enlightening walk yesterday while dd was at camogie training, ds who'll be 4 in Nov willingly went in a buggy Smile and says he will again, junior parkrun here we come dd running & me pushing ds in buggy, dh can have a lie in, he gets up at 3.30am mon to fri. Grin

Random great news about runners not so good about raging snot Hmm

Pik you've done 14k you'll do your half too, the hard work is done. Glucosamine is meant to be good for joints & omega oils have you considered any of those?

Pint fantastic news

Hrh & moogle great runs

RMC I'm going to plot my plan on a calendar I think

mogglemoo · 26/08/2017 09:12

Pika

Think back... you've done the long runs and your residual fitness will get you through. What are you looking forward to next week? What worries you?

I think, with nerves, we all forget just how far we've come. In February when I got my (totally unexpected) ballot place in the GNR I couldn't run 1k (though run in the past). How amazing are we all that we run homes, have children, work, study and still find the time to get our arses off the sofa, not once, but time and time again. When the runs are crap, disappointing and hard, we also need to remember all the great runs, the feeling of accomplishment when things go well.

I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on next week and the support you'll give us in the following weeks. God knows I'll need it!

RMC123 · 26/08/2017 09:48

Thanks Hoolit.
HRH - we all have those weeks!
Mines - Pleased you have reached an agreement with your SIL, it takes the pressure off you.
pika - Moggle and Mammy are right, you've got this. I have lots of 'niggles' at the moment. Sore shoulder and a random muscle twinge in my right bum cheek (!). Have started taking ibuprofen before I run!
Random - sorry about the snots, but pleased about the new shoes and improving heel.
Mammy - plotting has definitely helped me.
Great pep talk Moggle. You are so right we are all amazing! I love this thread!

Got out and did my 5k this morning. I actually managed it sub 30 mins (just!) which I haven't done in over a year.
Need to buy some new running leggings as my Alzheimer's Research running top for the GNR has come and it is bright blue and matches none of my running gear. Normally I couldn't care less but think I deserve a treat.

Pikachuwithyourmouthclosed · 26/08/2017 11:28

Ahh thanks guys.

You're right. The kilometers pounded must count for something.

I'll give it my best shot.

minesapintofwine · 26/08/2017 12:18

You're all doing amazing yes some of you (looking at you pikachu!) are mentally struggling but look how far we've come! It's in the bag...

I haven't been running sInce Thursdays disaster but hoping to do 10 miles tomorrow. I'm going to try my best especially as I want to come back to you and say I've done it Smile. If it doesn't happen again I'll probably hide under a rock

Hoolit · 26/08/2017 12:48

Well done pika you did amazing to get out there and run 14k good luck for next week.
Everyone is doing so well, MOg you put it well we are doing this Smile

I had to drag myself out this morning on my own as my running partner is away and managed 11 miles and i was comfortable apart from I got a blister again on my arch and I don't known what to do they are new had them a couple of months and now they decide to give me gip!
Do I stick with them and use plasters or buy new? I don't think I have time to run another long run as my race is two weeks away and next weekend I have a 22 mile hike to fit in Shock ah bollocks I'm an ejit Angry
