In a post night shift fit of silliness, I have just signed up for a fun sprint triathlon in 12 weeks...
I'm 33, 5'6 and 10st. Am currently fairly unfit but working on it, and am on week 3 of c25k. Swimming is my strong point, but will be aiming to finish it rather than get a decent time.
Am I going to die?!
Is anyone else doing one this year?

Well I think I wanted you to say it'll be too hard Grin I have another week or so to decide (at the past participants lower price). It's just the 1500m swim that worries me.

TriGirl007 · 27/09/2017 20:08

Gosh you all got the bug Grin yep I'd be worried about that swim too 1500m is 60L of 25m pool? Gosh I could just about do that but my legs would be wobbly when I get out the pool & would take me up to hour to do that! Good luck

Igottastartthinkingbee · 27/09/2017 21:29

Can't believe I'm considering it to be honest trigirl! Trying to work out how much time I need to get my swimming solid. I'm only going to be able to really work hard on swimming and some running during the winter. Just wondering if it'll be enough!

TriGirl007 · 02/10/2017 09:52

Missed my swimming the last two weeks due to bugs n headaches really hoping I can get in the pool tonight as fear I will lose my mojo. I've bought some becanase? nasal spray to try out after swim to see if it reduces that "cold/stuffie" feeling I get after every swim. Someone else said it worked.
Anyone signed up then for next year? The ladies I did my one with have, but I'm going to get the HM out the way in March before committing I think....Smile

Igottastartthinkingbee · 02/10/2017 19:51

Oh dear trigirl hope you're all better. Is it chlorine that makes you bunged up? Would a nose clip help? I've never suffered with that so I'm not much use I'm afraid.

I've been laid low by a mystery virus for the last few days. Basically feel like I've been beaten up with a bit of feverishness thrown in. It's ever since I seriously started considering doing a standard distance triathlon! My body is saying no! Grin Seriously though, I cannot wait to feel better cause this is pretty rubbish, everything aches Sad.

TriGirl007 · 02/10/2017 21:05

Hope you feel better soon bee it's that time of the year isn't it! I've had 2wks out of the pool but I got back in tonight and it felt ok. I was tired as I also went for run earlier (doh!) but it was good to swim. Let's see how the spray helps. I'd noticed that I always felt like I "had a cold" when I woke up the next day from swimming and our pool isn't cholorine based mostly salt water cleaned (or something like that.. I really struggle in chlorine heavy pools) on the swimming thread someone mentioned they tried the spray after swimming and it worked. It is an "allergy" spray so I'm giving it a try Smile

Igotta, it's definitely achieveble, you should sign up! I want to do the Cotswold Olympic distance next year. I think I'd manage the swim and bike, it's just the run that worries me. I struggle with 5k, let alone 10! But if I went with the mindset of just completing it...I should be able to.

I've done quite a bit of running recently but no swimming or cycling. Must at least get back to the pool soon - I think all my swimming fitness will have gone.

reallyneedmoresleep · 09/10/2017 10:10

Am definitely getting carried away with this triathlon thing. I bought a new hybrid bike from Halfords which is lovely and got me round my starter sprint ok but then I started thinking that actually I'd really like a nice light road bike. I would be sensible and I would perhaps buy a nice second hand one as I don't actually do much cycling yet. I would maybe spend £300.
Sodding hell, I just collected my new bike yesterday and I bought it on a very expensive whim. £650!!!! And I'll need to buy new pedals because there's no way I can do the clippy pedals. And it's a man's bike ( I'm pretty tall) so I'll probably need to buy a different saddle to protect my lady-parts.
Haven't told DH yet...

Lifeisabeach · 09/10/2017 10:42

Oooh exciting really - what make/model is it? I also have a men's bike and bought a Selle Italia saddle - much more comfy :)

Igottastartthinkingbee · 10/10/2017 21:23

really that post made me smile! Feeling a bit fed up at the moment and your frivolous purchase cheered me up! Hope you've been out lots on your shiny new bike. How's your DH taken the news Grin What did you get?

I've not been doing anything exercise wise. Still recovering from this random virus, bloods have shown some funny results so taking it easy until things settle down. Haven't signed up for next years big triathlon yet!

reallyneedmoresleep · 11/10/2017 08:09

My new bike is a carbon Giant Defy. It's very light and thin and sitting on it feels a bit like I imagine riding a racehorse would be after learning on a Shetland pony. I have found out where the gears are after watching a YouTube video. I have a gel Selle Italia saddle ( unisex as the women's looked ridiculously broad) and new pedals ( the guy in Halfords was very nice but did laugh at me).
Now I just need to get out a bit more. Off for a 25k pootle with a friend who's signed up for 3 Olympic tris next year Shock
Igotta so sorry to hear you're poorly and horrible it's dragging on so long. Have you had your thyroid checked?

reallyneedmoresleep · 11/10/2017 08:10

Also, still haven't told DH. Maybe it's my Christmas present.
And my birthday present

TriGirl007 · 11/10/2017 08:59

Made me smile too reallyneedsleep it’s nice when you can “treat” yourself Smile

Hope you feel better soon bee it’s horrid when exercise is such a part of your wellbeing and you feel crap. I hope the test results help.

I’ve not signed up for any thing except a HM in March so that’s my winter training focus. And I’ll keep the swimming going as a cross train to the running. I do struggle to get out cycling in the winter, my bike tends to just sit in the shed Nov-march!

TriGirl007 · 06/12/2017 17:22

Anyone signed up for another Tri? There’s a few being advertised and I’m slightly tempted for a May one but may still wait for the HMs to be done first Smile

reallyneedmoresleep · 18/12/2017 11:58

Hello triathletes! My DH has been remarkably mellow about my new bike - he says it’s a cheaper mid life crisis than a sports car...
I’ve signed up for a sprint triathlon at Leeds Castle, which involves a 750m swim in a moat. That’s more than 3 times the distance of my last triathlon swim. God.
I’ve been jogging a few times a week but can only just manage a sub30 minute Parkrun. I’m going to come last, I think.

TriGirl007 · 18/12/2017 15:33

I’m cross training this week on the slopes in Austria ⛷Grin but boy I’m having fun this is the fittest I’ve been for years swooshing down the slopes Smile
I was trying hard to get a sub 30min 5k in before we left but the closest I got was 30.24sec! Arrh...but I have got up to 10miles in my HM training so I’m growing distance not speed at the mo. I think I may well have another go at the June Tri near us.

pinkginanyone · 19/12/2017 08:02

Hi everyone, well done with all your races!! I’ve just started tri training about two months sho, hoping to complete my first race in April.

So far I can complete a 20km cycle & 1.5k run, so my brick work is coming on nicely. I’ve not done any swimming since everything’s in separate locations but am hoping to switch to a nice new leisure club in the new year where I can practice everything.

I’d it ok to do a sprint tri for my first attempt? Am afraid I won’t be quick enough.

TriGirl007 · 19/12/2017 18:55

I’d think you be alright pink but work on the running or cycling. I was nearly last out the pool on my Go-Tri but was quick in transition and went past most on the bike and few more on the run as I hadn’t killed my legs in the pool Grin I’d mostly done running getting comfy at 10k but not fast at all.

Lifeisabeach · 20/12/2017 20:59

I’m still pushing on with the winter training. OH and I signed up for zwift and we’ve put my bike on the turbo trainer, so I’ve been using that twice a week. It’s boring but I don’t think I’d be doing any outdoor cycling at the moment. I’ve picked up the swimming again, also 2x a week and my 400m time has improved slightly. Running had been going well; I did a 5 mile race at the start of November and was pleased with my time. But it’s gone tits up recently and I’ve really struggled with it, don’t know why.

Race-wise, I did an aquathlon (400m/5k) in November and have another 5 mile race booked in January. There are 4 more aquathlons I could do too, one a month in Jan-April. Plans for next year are the sprint Tri in my town in May, and maybe also the half marathon - also in May. And then the Cotswold Olympic distance at the start of September - maybe!!

pinkginanyone · 20/12/2017 22:54

That’s great Tri thanks. Very encouraging to hear that to. I know my strength is running so I’ll work harder on that.

Life, sounds like you do quite a bit of training/racing. Hope I can pick things up in the new year!

SkiGirl007 · 08/01/2018 21:22

I had a good swim session today and made me think again about giving a Tri another go. My swimming is a lot better than it was 6mths ago when I did the Go-Tri. I feel far more confident getting in the pool and doing frontcrawl straight off and with other people in the lane. I couldn’t do that at all last yearSmile I just need to get my bike confidence back again now. I’ll wait till the weather improves though before getting back out on two wheels. How’s everyone else’s training going through the winter?

Lifeisabeach · 09/01/2018 10:59

Still plodding on with training here. Been trying to focus on running as it’s my weakest, and I’m finally seeing some small improvements. But in the meantime I’m not doing enough swimming or cycling - it’s difficult to juggle the three disciplines!

I’m doing an aquathlon this Sunday, so hoping the weather is a bit milder than it’s been for the last few days, or I’ll freeze getting out of the pool! Have also entered some duathlons - just short ones, 2k run/15k bike/2k run. Having races planned keeps me motivated!

SkiGirl I’ll be nervous when I get back out on the road on my bike, don’t think I’ve ridden it outside since October.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 09/01/2018 20:51

Hello skigirl and life! I just came on to start a new triathlon thread as I thought this one must've disappeared into the ether!

Anyway, I've done pretty much nothing since October (when I had that virus) until just before Christmas. Back into the swing of things now, have been running most days in the last week and went for my first proper swim yesterday. Like you ski I got straight in a swam front crawl with others in the lane. I couldn't even swim front crawl this time last year so I'm happy with that! My fitness unsurprisingly was bloody awful though, I tired so quickly that my stroke was a mess by the end of each length. But I'm determined to keep going and nail it this year. So much so that I'm still thinking of entering the standard distance triathlon in Leeds in June Shock

And looking at the training plan I've no idea how I'm going to fit it all in either life. It seems that that bit of triathlon just doesn't get easier, there's so much to do!!

I too am waiting for better weather and lighter nights before getting on my shiny cause it's barely been used since I got it in September new bike. Lots of running and swimming in the meantime.

SkiGirl007 · 09/01/2018 21:18

It’s hard fitting it in isn’t it? I’m trying to run 3x a week and then get in 1-2swims but no cycling time.
I was pleased with my swimming as I was struggling to get any faster but this week I started doing one steady length and one faster length and I felt like I was actually improving Smile im mainly swimming to stretch out my running legs but I’m quite enjoying it.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 10/01/2018 09:23

One more thing to fit in, that I'm realising is pretty important, is core training. I have literally no core strength and my arms are preutty weak too. So I'm starting (today!) with a few core exercises and small weights. At least I can do that in the comfort of my own home so I don't look like a total muppet!. Means that I can do it in the evenings when DH is away and I'm not just sat doing nothing. I'm hoping it'll really help with my swimming. My swimming is so poor and I come out with backache which I'm convinced is because I'm all leg strength and nothing else.
