Map My Walk - accurate calorie burn??

sadmum2017 · 23/06/2017 02:19

I've been using the Map My Walk app but I'm not sure how accurate it is. New mum/enormous/c-section. My usual route is approx. 3.6 miles. I'm 108kg (bloody hell...) and 5'9". The app says I've burned 700 kcals doing this! When I googled the distance, 300-400 kcals were calculated. My route is very hilly countryside walk, could this account for extra calories or is this BS?

How long did it take you?

1hr 40mins, but stopped at a shop on the way home and didn't stop app.

It does sound a little bit high, 400 sounds more realistic.

Nonetheless, 400 calories is a lot!

Maybe try the My Fitness Pal app? It's quite accurate.

I don't suppose pushing 12lbs + load of shopping up and down hills would make it up to 700kcals?! Grin Bloody feels like it right now!

If you are carrying stuff, that definitely increases it, yes.

Don't worry too too much about the exact number of calories though. Just be glad that you did exercise that burned hundreds of calories and got you outside.

Keep doing that and you'll get the weight off.

Try this calculator, with HR = 110. Comes up with numbers similar to 400.

I'm not sure how accurate Fitbits are at measuring this sort of thing, but mine says I burn around 7 calories per minute when walking at my normal speed. I weigh 12 stone and that 7 calories includes my basal metabolic rate (think that's what it's called).

So 7 x 100 = 700, which is exactly the same as you. Allowing for the fact you weigh more than me (using more calories), but also that you walked at a slower speed (using fewer calories), then I'd say that sounds about right.

But then I'm no expert on fitness and my Fitbit might be completely wrong, so don't take my word for it. And as others have said, it's still a lot of calories to burn, whether it's 400 or 700.

When I use Map My Run it works out about 100cals a mile, so even allowing for carrying the weight it seems a bit high.

To be honest it's probably better it's not 700. I'm trying to lost it slow and strady and I've already added an extra 300 to myfitnesspal to account for breastfeeding. Not sure if I could eat 700kcals worth!
