Cross trainer at home..

So I bought a cheap cross trainer...
Back story; I'm 34, do no exercise apart from walking (walking the dog, not speed walking or serious hill walking or anything like that).
I'm too self conscious to go to the gym, especially by myself. The last time I went to a gym, which was about 15 years ago, the cross trainer was the only thing I liked. Bikes and rowing machines tend to make my knees pop out..
So I bought a cheap cross trainer to try and do a wee bit of exercise in the house. Anything's better than nothing right?
Anyway, anyone got any tips or suggestions for me starting out? Don't too much to start with is my plan so far..
Also, I got the cross trainer delivered today and built it up. Either it's a weird shape, I'm a weird shape or I've not put it together right but when the arm bits go away from me, I can't reach them! To keep a hold on them the whole time, I need to bend forward which hurt my back for the 3 seconds I tried it...
Am I an idiot? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!
