Running. Some days does it just not work?

I run 30 minutes 3 times a week.
Today I just couldn't do it. I couldn't even make half way.
The big difference today was that rather than getting up and going before work I was sitting around in bed for a while first.

Do you get days when it just won't work for you?

Not much help but I've not hit that point yet; still plodding through C25K and managed 20 mins today. Have found some days harder than others, but not found any day when I couldn't do it at all. Hope your mojo returns soon Smile

Hell yes, no matter how experienced you are.

I've run half marathons (slowly, in the manner of a deranged zombie, but nevertheless)

Some days I can't run round the block. That'sRunning for you, 2 forward one back. Sometimes I have a shite run because I'm coming down with a bug, sometimes there's no reason , and other days you'll be flying with no reason either.

Welcome to,the club :)

Oh yes, everyone has bad run days.sometimes there's a reason, like tiredness, time of the month, stress, illness, sometimes it just happens. A bad run is better than no run!

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 07/05/2017 07:39

I've found that too, sometimes it's just not happening.

SnickersWasAHorse · 07/05/2017 09:40

Well I'm glad it's not just me.
I've run that time and frequency for about 8 years and it's normally not a problem unless I'm coming down with something or, strangely, ovulating!

But yesterday there was no reason for it. The only thing I can think of is that on a work day I wake up, get dressed, big drink of water and go. Yesterday I sat around and read stuff for about an hour.
I think I need to go before my body realisers what I'm doing to it.

Slow down. If you're not feeling usual strength you can still complete the distance by learning to run slow.

So glad you mentioned this, I run 3 times a week too and the other day I just couldn't do it. It was like running through treacle. And I felt so rubbish.
I guess some days our bodies just say "nope"

eurochick · 07/05/2017 11:00

Yep. Some days it just doesn't happen. I think that's even the case for elite sports people.

For me I've noticed that levels of hydration and digestion are key (I can't run when I've eaten recently).

I'm so glad I read this thread - I'm on week 8 C25K and so far I've found it all going very smoothly....until this weekend which nearly killed me! I have woken this morning with killer period pains so I guess that's the explanation. I really want yo run tonight but I guess I'll have to see how I feel Sad

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 08/05/2017 08:40

That always does it for me too, Pink, but normally I'm ok again a day or two in. Hope you feel better soon.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 08/05/2017 14:44

Happens here too.
The flip side is the occasional run where your body just flows and takes over and it's utterly exhilarating. Shame they're in the minority! Grin

It's interesting because I did a sport (NOT running) to quite a high level many years ago, and one thing was drummed into us..

The difference between amateur and elite athletes is the amateur aiming for competition trains to a point where having a good day will get them the results they are hoping for. the (aspiring) elite will train assuming they won't have a good day, so their 'having a bad day' performance is the one they use as a benchmark.

There's a big psychological difference, if I know I can run 10k in an hour no matter how crap my run is (as an example) then if I enter and have a good day then it's going to be better, and I'll feel ok, even if it isn't my best time. If I enter thinking I might get 50 minutes, even though I only did it once on a prefect day, I'm going to be very disillusioned if it doesn't happen.
