Everyone welcome.

Welcome Tree
You must have natural swimming skills if you can hop in and swim so far after such a long break. Good stuff.

Yup...we share our ragey stories here!

I use Boots Sun, Swim and Gym shampoo. It works for me. I use lots of conditioner as well. Hairdresser said my hair was in good condition.

I would def use a pool with Swimtag, but we don't have one near me.

Hissy you rock! You are beating your demons.

Oh I'll tell you what raged me yesterday. A couple of the women in the fast lane were a little faster than I was.

A few times, they'd pass me right near the end but then rather than kicking off and setting straight off again, they'd stop. This meant that I couldn't easily kick off as they were in the way. If they were planning on resting at the end then maybe they didn't need to try so hard to pass me within 3 strokes of the end. I may have glared.

Welcome Mirabelle. 1600m is a great start.

I use this stuff before using my usual shampoo, conditioner and shower gel and it works very well: www.proswimwear.co.uk/swim-spray.html
I've recently added a swimming cap too which I think helps my hair's condition.

I also use Swimtag. I've been 'challenged' by the leisure centre via Swimtag to swim the distance between the three local leisure centres over the course of 8 weeks. It is 15 miles so I should get it done in 5 weeks of going three times a week and swimming a mile each time. It is the first time I've accepted any of the challenges because it is so local and quite achievable! I've been twice within the challenge and am 13% there apparently!

Hissy · 04/04/2017 12:49

Rights I dunno how you didnt say something, why ffing pass if you are just going to stop. to me it means that they were trying to pass you to make a point then literally didn't have the oomph to keep going.

the other people who piss me off are those who ARE slower than you, but don't like to admit it, they can't possibly tuck in behind you or pace themselves, they can't keep going continuously though so when you have gone off in front of them, they end their lap early and go off in front of you again. Often blokes, go off thrashing down the lane and then have to stop.
I was the first one in and the last one out. Im back tonight as I need to keep up momentum.

No idea of distance as yet, just need to drag myself into the zone and see where we get to. took me until about 1300m last night before it felt nice...

I hear swimspray is merely Vitamin C so you can actually make it yourself. I need a hair barrier that's for sure, my hat is only textile and I hate the rubber ones

Have paid for my TI catch course today, 90mins working on catch and other bits and bobs. Have to pay for the open water session too which is the day before the catch session.

Hissy · 04/04/2017 12:50

Love your challenge Singing perhaps if I get myself on one with the swimtag it will motivate me to keep going there, to the pool i have developed a fear of... i am such a twat

Hissy · 04/04/2017 12:53

rights of course you do know that the answer is tumble turns.... theyd soon clear out if you did that --oh yeah whatever, ftfo- flip and then pushed off whether they were there or not....

too aggressive? my bad Grin

MirabelleTree · 04/04/2017 13:01

Thank you all very much - I'll get shopping. Thank you for the heads up on the breaststroke legs Hissy , I'm going to have to relearn that. I've identified another pool possibility, no Swimtag but possibly quieter during times I can get there. I think trying them makes sense, though one you have to join first. I'm on a major weight loss kick in perpetration for gallbladder surgery next month plus generally to get the huge amount of excess weight I have off once and for all and this time keep it off. I think it's the extra weight that makes me buoyant and able to get back in and do it!

Sunday I got in and started in the slow lane as I hadn't been for ages. Became apparent it was too slow so moved to medium lane. Two women were there holding everyone up repeatedly. I heard one say to the other she hadn't been for for a year and the other saying she hadn't been for ages. Took all my self control not to suggest that it might then be a good idea to move into the very quiet lane next to us.

Hissy · 04/04/2017 13:15

Mirabelle - you absolutely can suggest to them that they might be happier in a lane more suited to their speed.. or tell the life guard and get them to encourage them. Or i can lend my lovely boyf and his rifle?

If i were you, I'd go to the place that makes it easiest to swim, most cost effective and establish your routine. I m sure you will be able to ask for a trial at the member place?

BestIsWest · 04/04/2017 13:38

Went and did 30 mins.Shoulder still very sore. Going to have to see a physio I think. I had a frozen shoulder some years back on the other side ad I don't want a repeat of that. Pool was very quiet thankfully.

SkiBike007 · 04/04/2017 18:30

Finally made it back in the pool last night after a break for a month did 35L in half hour mostly breast stroke and back with some float kicking. I did get the rage when a guy similar age got in, watched me swim half a lenght towards him then decided to push off when I touched the end grrr he was a lot slower than me grrrrr I decided to kick past him with just a float & he sped up but by the 2nd lenght I had half a lenght on him Grin then I gained a lenght by the 3rd so i felt vindicated it feeling pissed off he had interrupted my flow (there was no one else in the lane!!) My DD bless her was in also training with her club and she ended up doing 56L in an hr - she's only 9yrs old, and had only done max of 20L in a session before but they were doing a speed session. She's such an inspiration to me Smile

Hissy · 04/04/2017 18:34

The guy that popped into my lane did that, pushed off far too late... and clearly couldn't do 100m front crawl

One set saw him off...

Mean but, pick a lane where you are sure you'll fit....

Hissy · 04/04/2017 18:34

Good for you tho Ski and your dd! That's amazing!!

SkiBike007 · 04/04/2017 20:13

Thanks hissy I just get the rage esp when guys do it, as I would never do it.
I've found all your swim tales really inspiring on this thread and our local outdoor pool opens next week so ill be able to get in 1-2more sessions a week then as I love that pool, especially when it's raining as no one else is in it Grin

Hissy · 04/04/2017 23:01

Oh how lovely! Where's the pool?

Have booked my open water intro, but I'd love an outdoor pool session, and I'd love the rain too!

Another REALLY hard session today, but i did it. It was packed, 4 people in my lane, then a gaggle of girls chatting. I had no rescue remedy either, it was all on determination alone.

I actually asked them they could find somewhere else to chat as it was a bit cramped... they moved

Another 800m, not even into the zone, but 3200 looks a rounder number on the watch 🏊‍♀️😂

SkiBike007 · 05/04/2017 06:22

Well done hissy you are doing amazingly. The outdoor pool is in Devon and is mostly community volunteer ran.

Hissy · 05/04/2017 06:42

There's a community run pool in Eastleigh, the TI team are looking to run an outdoor open water session there later in the year

rightsofwomen · 05/04/2017 06:57

My nearest outdoor pool is jesus green in Cambridge. I hear it is cold. Maybe that will be my challenge this year!

I had that problem last week, 5 people hogging the wall and nowhere to touch to turn, really annoying. Actually found that worse at the olympic pool, they do one length then hang around watching the diving and nowhere to turn.

Saturday is D day for the swimathon, so went this morning and swam until I got kicked out which was just over 2 hours, which was 150 lengths (3.75k) was a bit stiff this afternoon, but

Hissy · 05/04/2017 20:30

Nice bruffin very nice!

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 06/04/2017 07:58

Did 1800m at my session last night, found it really tough. Definitely have lost some fitness over the last couple of weeks - I need to stay consistent and keep at it!

I think I really am going to invest in a swim watch ... found a site for the Garmin Swim for 118 euro which I think is not too bad? Does anyone have one?

Does anyone here do sea swimming? I've been tempted by the challenge but the Irish sea is currently 9 degrees and I don't have a wetsuit Hmm

SingingAvocado · 06/04/2017 10:46

Beautiful swim this morning. The sun was shining in at the little slit of window at the pool at just the right angle to make the water dappled and the drops look golden. Almost felt like being outside! And nobody getting in anyone else's way either. I am 18% done on my challenge too. Good all round.

Amazing duration Bruffin. Good luck with the Swimathon. Our pool is closed on Good Friday for it.

I've never properly swum in the sea, Face and am a little bit frightened of it. This book is supposed to be really inspiring and talks about swimming in the sea (in Brighton I think): www.amazon.co.uk/Leap-Woman-Some-Waves-Will/dp/0091959594?tag=mumsnetforum-21

Hissy · 06/04/2017 11:15

Face I have the GARMIN swim, it's good, it's definitely the best swim watch for pools.

I'm doing open water intro in May, am swimming in the Thames in July, and will look to join my coaches in the Bournemouth Pier to Pier next year I'm sure. I'm getting a wetsuit soon... payday today, so no excuse...

Alpkit is cheap and good apparently, this is where I'm going to start. As good swimmers need neutral buoyancy.

Once you go outdoors its a revelation apparently...

bruffin · 06/04/2017 11:50

Singingavocado
Thank you
I also love the golden light coming through the window at sunrise, when i swim. I had a nice swim this morning. Not too busy and did 2k in 1 hour and 3 or 4 minutes . Once saturday is over going to stick to hour swims

Hissy · 06/04/2017 16:51

I'm going to see if I can schedule an early morning swim next week, ds is off so I won't need to worry so much about him getting to school etc

I just want to see if I can function at that time in the morning Smile

rightsofwomen · 07/04/2017 20:16

Course you can!

I have JUST finished editing a book chapter so am off to swim my brains out at 9pm.

Home alone as DS2 is with his git of a wanker Dad and DS1 has gone to friends for the night.
