You are all inspiring me to go back to the pool. I was a club swimmer as a teen and managed a regular swim til DC came along. And since then have done nothing! DD is now a club swimmer and Im spending hours in the pool watching her and feeling sad I can't go for a swim too.

So have resolved to join a local masters lessons group, I have fair technique still but terrible stamina so need a lesson type environment. I am very bad at making myself keep going!

lljkk · 23/03/2017 21:36

One of the rocket swimmers today advised I should stretch my arms out more. I'll give it a try. I thought I was supposed to aim for 4 o'clock and my stroke was too long! I can't do this technical stuff.

omg, Thursday night carnage. about 35 people in the lanes tonite, too many. I hope I can switch to more lunch swims, instead.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 23/03/2017 21:54

I've managed 1250m in 45 mins tonight! Mostly alternating front crawl and breaststroke but occasionally doing two consecutive crawl lengths with only a second or twos rest in between - very slowly I am getting better!! Yay!! I've missed my lesson the last couple of weeks because of poorly kids and husband away. I was really looking forward to 'impressing' my teacher with my two consecutive lengths next week when DH tells me he's not going to be here waaahhhh! So no lesson next week either. Just hope I'm not picking up too many bad habits in the meantime.

BestIsWest · 23/03/2017 21:56

Do it. Lane to myself at lunchtime today. Oh bliss. I get arsy if there are more than five people In the pool

allegretto · 24/03/2017 06:30

Thanks for the welcome. Lesson went well although I spent the whole of the morning thinking "I don't want to go". When I actually go, I like it! Not sure why it is so hard to get into the pool Confused. We have two pools about 10 minutes walk from the house (right next to each other!) and they both only do lane swimming so if I can actually get into a routine of going it is really convenient. Bruffin - what is this sorcery of listening to music in the pool? I didn't even know that was possible. Grin Well done Username on getting back in!

bruffin · 24/03/2017 08:00

Allegretto
it gets easier when the weather is nicer and you dont have to take so many clothes off. I like to swim early in the morning but couldnt do it in the winter because of the dark mornings and just didnt want to get it out of bed. Yesterday was the first time i was up with the birds and was at the swimming pool at 7am.

as for the little magic gadget for music I have this type, but mine is only 4gb but cost me £15 The only thing i dont like about it is you cant shuffle the music, although you can go one song backwards or forwards.
Word of warning dont try and singalong unless you are doing backstroke as you drown Grin

Unfortunately I don't have that as an excuse - it was 20 degrees here yesterday!

bruffin · 24/03/2017 08:13

well thats my excuse and im sticking to it Grin

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 24/03/2017 22:39

Hi, haven't been here in a while! My 'big swim' is in the morning and feeling screwed at the moment!

I was ill Mon & Tues and couldn't train - so then did a gentle-ish 45 mins on Weds evening, didn't feel 100% but managed ok. Then I went to the gym Thursday for a gentle, mostly rehab/stretching session - and then a gig last night where i was standing for 3 hours ... as a result I'm DYING with a tight back and serious DOMS in legs and glutes. That gentle session obv wasn't as gentle as I thought :(

So to conclude, I'm tired, sore, achy, and have a sore throat. Not feeling all that positive about the morning!!! Argh!! I hope an early night and a couple of double espressos will sort me out Hmm

Am off to Stanford (California) for a conference. There is a pool. Me and my colleagues did some wanky google earth stuff and we think it's 12.5m long.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 25/03/2017 13:52

I did it! Beat my goal of 40 mins with 37m 3s ....delighted! Though still would have liked to shave off those 3 seconds :D

It was a great event, definitely signing up for next year.

Hissy · 25/03/2017 22:38

If you're off to Stanford rights they have professional swim team facilities, im sure!

Hissy · 25/03/2017 22:39

Face!! Well done! Fabulous time!!!

rightsofwomen · 26/03/2017 13:41

Ah yes hissy, that must be the case, I was meaning the one at the apartment we're staying at. I'll only have time in the morning or evening for a swim ie not when I'm on the Stanford campus.

Hissy · 26/03/2017 16:18

Oh, why not see if you couldn't wangle a session? Lay the good old British accent on a bit thick... 😂

In other news, my TI instructor emailed me yesterday to see if I was up for the Bournemouth Pier to Pier...

But it's the week after the Henley Mile and tbh I'm nervous enough about that!!

SingingAvocado · 26/03/2017 19:26

WELL DONE Face

Bon voyage Rights

MyUsernameIsInvalid · 27/03/2017 00:16

What event is that Face?

How far did you manage in 37:03?

rightsofwomen · 27/03/2017 01:03

hissy how far is it between the piers?
It must be proper hard to swim along the coast. I can't even cope with the "tide" caused by the flume outlet!

I'd have to bunk off "interesting scientific talks" to use the uni pool. I would never do such a thing Grin

indignatio · 27/03/2017 02:39

Please may I join. I have been back swimming for the last three weeks and i am loving it.

I have read both threads, had a sneaky middle of the night purchase of a waterproof mp3 player, and love the fact that I am not the only one objecting to other people"in the way" . Sometimes I think I am expending way more mental energy on wishing them out of the way than physical energy in ploughing up and down the pool.

Does anyone else have a fitbit? I bought one because I kept losing count of lengths, unfortunately it only counts my breaststroke lengths, it does not like the crawl lengths.

rightsofwomen · 27/03/2017 05:55

welcome idnig - the more the merrier (as long as you DON'T GET IN ANYONE'S WAY!).

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 27/03/2017 07:15

Welcome indig

Myusername, its the Swim for a mile event, on all over Ireland every year around March/April time. It was my first year doing it so delighted to get to a stage where I could do 64 lengths almost non stop, 10 weeks ago, I could only do a couple!

Now, what's next! Do those who do open water swims just 'get in and swim'? I like the controled environment of a pool tbh, having to deal with, waves, tides, salt, sea creatures and the cold seems like a huge leap from where I am now!!

Hissy · 27/03/2017 11:38

Rights bournemouth.co.uk/event/bournemouth-pier-to-pier-swim-2017/

it's 1.4 miles, so 'doable' but I have not even ventured outdoors yet.

BestIsWest · 27/03/2017 19:13

I've got a sore shoulder. I went today and did 600m but had to give up because it was hurting too much. Don't think I've done anything to hurt it. Very annoying.

Hissy · 27/03/2017 19:25

Rest it Best, take it easy for a day or so.

Let it heal.

Or .... go to the pool but just do kicking exercises

BestIsWest · 27/03/2017 20:11

I was thinking I might do kicking. Boring though. There was no one else in the pool today either. A few people in the jacuzzi. I had a whole lane to myself. It was lovely.
