We've filled up the first Swimming for fitness thread, so here is the new one.

Everyone welcome.

Or could have been my kick was too splashy, I've got a pretty splashy kick.
There was a very slow lady practising a very slow & gentle front crawl who joined lane after I left, but she wasn't thumping so presumably not objectionable.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 29/07/2017 16:19

We did a little bit on turns at the end of last weeks tri session. Very basic mind, think she'll build us up slowly to tumble turns. She looked exasperated at our untutored turns so had to do something about it!

Can I ask what goggles everyone has? Tried my friends Cressi ones the other day that were great but looking for other recommendations. I have the small goggle style (zoggs) but the cressi had much wider vision.

FatGirlWithChocolate · 29/07/2017 17:45

I have a pair of Nabaji ones from Decathlon. They are incredibly comfortable.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 29/07/2017 21:32

What style are they fatgirl?

FatGirlWithChocolate · 29/07/2017 21:56

They are these ones.

Love 'frog star pencil' so much.

My 12 yr old DD gave me some tumble turn and f crawl training today. She has to do some swimming at school but is all about running and ball sports really and says she finds swimming lessons soooo boring. Turns out she had some great tips though!

CorrigansDoorKnob · 30/07/2017 15:02

I still can't do turns. I psych myself up then chicken out at the last minute. I can't seem to get my hands to stay by my side either.

FannyBurney · 30/07/2017 21:42

I can't tumble either, especially not when I'm in the middle of swimming some lengths. I know what you mean about psyching up- I need to tread water and have a little think first...

TheMShip · 31/07/2017 13:34

hissy and anyone else with wrecked hair, I learned an amazing tip from the no-shampoo crew. Soak your hair thoroughly in the shower, then put on your swimming hat (silicone are best for not pulling). I only wash my shoulder length hair weekly and I swim 3-4x a week, my hair is in surprising good shape and doesn't smell like chlorine at all.

Corrigans I was thinking about your post while I was swimming just now, and I paid attention to what my hands were doing in the turns so I could report back. My hands don't actually stay at my sides, they go in like a dive over my head into the turn, then push out to the sides, then come back together over my head as my feet hit the wall on the push to glide out. I'm sorry if that doesn't make sense, but thought you'd like to know the hands are actually fairly dynamic in a turn.

I have these: Aqua Sphere Kaiman Lady Swimming Goggle which were recommended here. I love them. No misting.

My little boy has the junior ones and loves his, too.

I am going to body balance AND THEN swimming this evening.
DS2 with ex for 3 weeks so I have lots of flexibility.

My hair is in such bad shape these days..dyeing to cover the grey combined with swimming..it like straw!

Hissy · 31/07/2017 14:32

FatGirl I'm not even going to ask. In every respect, from your username onwards, you ARE me Grin

I am getting a new silicone hat and yes, TheMShip, I have heard about the soaking hair first. Tried it last week and it might be a habit I get more used to.

I also have SwimSpray which I have not been using. Will start again.

It has to be said though that my hair did recover when I was in the lake more, as I have to have a bright neon colour rubber hat and no chlorine.

I've been caning the pools recently getting a lot of techniques stuff done - so far shaved 20s off my 50m on a good day, so going well :)

Hissy · 31/07/2017 14:33

Our coach says to use the hands to effect the tumble turn, they are the things that provide propulsion and stability.

I do need to practice them...

rightsofwomen · 31/07/2017 14:33

My hair is OK. It must get washed daily or sometimes twice (if I've run and swum [swam?]). I mostly use the Run, Gym, Swim shampoo from Boots and a bucket of conditioner. Mostly let it dry naturally and then straighten if I'm not just putting it back up again to do more sport!

Oh I am going grey but am growing it in along with hi-lights.

On my 45th birthday I decided to go to the cinema. OH was working, so I thought I would take myself off to see Macbeth (great film). Got to the till to buy my ticket, and the annoyingly perky 18 year old on the till looked me up and down and gave me a senior citizen ticket. Didn't ask, just thought I was 60 plus. The devastation was immense. That, combined with Hairdresser telling me that if I dyed my hair I would "look more my age" led me to make the fatal mistake of actually doing it. Black, of all colours. It lasts about 2 weeks before the roots come through. Worst thing I ever did. So growing it out now, and look even worse. This getting old lark is not for the faint of heart! ;)

Hissy · 31/07/2017 16:03

I've gone blonder... hides the greys better...
highlights are a good idea actually rights

FatGirlWithChocolate · 31/07/2017 16:07

Yes, blonde better. I was very dark brown unfortunately, so it just never crossed my mind.

rightsofwomen · 31/07/2017 16:28

Yes, I've gone blonde.
My stylist (ha! That sounds more fancy than it is!), pretty much said I couldn't keep covering the grey with an all over dark at home - I was looking washed out, unnatural and it would go red.

I've been having highlights for 2 years now and I'm really happy. I get so many compliments and I won't have to go through the pain of having to go from dark to grey dramatically. My sis says I'll crack and get the Garnier out, but we'll see......5 years from now she'll wish she'd done what I had.

FatGirlWithChocolate · 31/07/2017 19:46

So you went from dark to blond, rights? Was it easy?

rightsofwomen · 31/07/2017 22:33

Yeah it was. Full head high-lights once a year and then top ups 2 or 3 times. Gradually getting more blonde.

ANYWAY - I balanced my body and then swam 1K. Nice.

DS1 is back from festival. Mud-tastic!

Anyone see Usain Bolt doc last night? He did a bit of swimming.

God he's crap... we could all challenge him to a race.... and THRASH him in the pool Grin

SingingAvocado · 01/08/2017 13:47

It would be quite satisfying to beat Usain Bolt Hissy. All good here, 2km done this morning … I'm booting my husband out the house for a run as soon as I get home from my morning swim. He needs to get back to it and easier if there is a set time!

I've just ordered another two bottle of SwimSpray. Hissy mentioned it upthread. I'm a big fan. You can't order more than two at a time because it is an aerosol so added in a bargain cap and some goggles, both from clearance, to qualify for free postage (and so I've got spares). Giving these a go: www.proswimwear.co.uk/maru-aero-antifog-goggles-smoke-smoke.html

rightsofwomen · 01/08/2017 15:22

I can empathise with Bolt - swimming is hard if you're a natural runner.
Not that I'm quite as natural a runner as him! Oh I saw him in the 200m Olympics in London 2012. Bloody amazing.
