For one pointless -excuse- reason after another I get so far and then stop .

This time I have signed myself up for a 5k in May so I have to do it now . I do enjoy it once I get into it and I really want to finish something for once .

If anyone has any hints tips or kicks up the arse spare I would appreciate it .

Well done chicken Smile
It isn’t easy but it does feel good when it’s over!

LadyWithLapdog · 27/10/2017 00:11

Welcome Sagely and Ch Ickes and well done Carrie and everyone else who's kept going.

MothQuandary · 27/10/2017 14:25

Well done for starting, chicken that’s the hardest part!

carrie, it sounds like you’ve pretty much finished if you can already run for 35 mins, regardless which week you’re on. How old are your kids? (I assume these are human kids and not dog kids but I’m not 100% sure)

I’m sorry you had a hard w4r1, feral. But you didn’t stop - well done! From one of the c25k forums I’ve looked at, it sounds like lots of people have to take several goes at a week before they can move on to the next. You are making progress, anyway, even if it may not feel like it. At least the 3 minute runs aren’t troubling you too much.

I did w4r2 this morning. It was freezing and foggy and I thought I wasn’t going to make it at the half way mark, but somehow I did. Definitely no “sprinting” this time, though!

Lady please spend money on shoes instead of physio; I think it will work out cheaper!

carrie74 · 27/10/2017 19:03

Well done everyone and welcome chicken!

Moth, children are 12 &10 so not tiny and perfectly capable. Plus I’m not coming as a complete beginner, but had definitely fallen by the wayside, and was struggling to run for longer than 10 mins, so it’s been good to be able to build it up again. I did run a 10k a few years ago, so I know I can do it Grin, but I’m slow and that’s never really improved. Running definitely doesn’t come naturally to me Smile.

I thin C25k is such a brilliant programme, know lots of people who have amazed themselves with their progress, it’s fab!

SagelyNodding · 27/10/2017 20:16

Everyone is doing really well! I feel very lazy as I haven't been able to run this week, but you have remotivated me to go tomorrow morning and have a stab at w6r2... I'm definitely going to struggle though! Still haven't invested in decent trainers either maybe after half term...

feral · 27/10/2017 21:32

I went out tonight for w4r2 and it was better. Only stopped running at 4 mins something into a fast walk which was probably faster than my run!

I wore a different bra tonight and think that helps as the other one is too tight! I’ve been in denial 😎

I feel good though. Finding this thread inspirational.

MothQuandary · 27/10/2017 23:24

Well done, feral! I think my “running” is probably slower than my walking too, most of the time, although I find it hard to keep it slow if I think someone is watching, as I start to feel self-conscious.

My sports bra is too loose (in the cups, not the back, sadly). I bought it years ago, at the same time I bought my cheapo trainers, and I’m a different shape now. But I wear it over the top of my ordinary bra, which gives me just enough support. Sexy!

My oldest DC is 9, carrie and I have been thinking I could bring her along on a run. She is built like a distance runner (tall and skinny) so might be good at it.

DP is away for the weekend, getting pissed up at his mate’s 40th. Three days / two nights. What a jammy git. I’m really jealous as I’m stuck at home with 3 kids on my own and can’t even go for a run. Still, I am now thinking that my reward should be new shoes and a new sports bra.

carrie74 · 28/10/2017 13:07

Yes definitely some nice new kit for you as a reward Moth!

Well all 4 of us took part in the Bath Parkrun this morning, DD12 finished in 33 mins, I did 35 and DH stayed with DS10 who finished in 38. Could maybe knock a couple of mins off max for v slow start and bottleneck at 1k, so am very happy. Felt very comfortable most of the way round, hit an energy low at 4K, but can’t have been that bad as my split times showed 4 & 5 k to be the fastest. DD now fired up to run sub 30, DS never wants to do it again despite the carrot of a McDonalds breakfast afterwards (which was absolutely delicious Grin).

carrie74 · 28/10/2017 13:09

Oh and lots of kids running this morning Moth, they tend not to be brilliant at pacing themselves though, and peg off and then need to stop. And because under 11s need to be with an adult, it means you need to do the same Shock. But lovely to get out in the fresh air and a nice way to start the weekend. Just wish we had one closer (but not enough to actually try and organise one Grin, I help organise a local 10k and that’s enough hard work!!).

SagelyNodding · 28/10/2017 18:05

Go carrie and family! I wish we had Parkruns over here.
Completed week 6 run 2 and it felt bad Sad My phone was playing up so I had nothing to listen to except my thoughts, got lost going down a different trail and had to double back, my butt jiggles, my ankle began hurting I could go on!

On a positive note I still did it, and felt a sense of achievement at the end Smile

carrie74 · 29/10/2017 20:08

Yay Sagely, yes you did it! That’s all that really matters. I’ve run one 10k race (the one I help organise), and the amount of self hatred I aimed at myself because I was so slow and just didn’t seem to improve on time ever. But I did it, I was faster than everyone sitting down. And I tell you what, 5ks became almost fun when I wasn’t trying to increase my distance and wasn’t having to keep going for 1hr+ (it took me about 72 mins I think). Keep going!

MothQuandary · 29/10/2017 21:34

Well done, Sagely. It’s (obviously) a much greater achievement to complete a run when it’s a struggle than to complete one you find easy. It’s by pushing yourself to keep going when it’s tough that you improve.

I’ve registered with my nearest Parkrun, carrie. I want to get through at least week 5 first before I have a go. Not long until that, now: it’s w4r3 tomorrow. Eek!

LosingItThisYear · 30/10/2017 11:00

Hello, I'm still here, but have dropped off my c25k recently. I completed week 7 about a month ago, then various things happened that meant I wasn't getting out regularly for a run. Anyway, want to get back into it and have managed a 23 min run - not sure where to slot back into the programme though.

Well done everyone on getting out as the cold weather sets in.

carrie74 · 30/10/2017 11:03

Well done Moth good luck!

Welcome back losing, at 23 mins I’d probably jump in at the 25 mins runs, was that week 7?

SagelyNodding · 30/10/2017 17:21

Hi all! Did an off-programme walk/run/drag a 6 year old up hills on his bike kinda thing today-it took 50 minutes to do 5k... On the plus side I have found my 5k loop although it is a bit hilly! Back on it properly from Wednesday I hope with the scary 22 minute run to finish week 6-i never thought I would get this far!

LadyWithLapdog · 30/10/2017 18:09

I DID IT! I can run for 30 minutes. I'm not doing 5K, I need to check the distance properly, but I finished. I started on 26 August from zero.

Thank you for the encouragement and general chat. It helped.

Keep going everyone! I'll hang around on this thread for a bit longer.

Serendipitystardust · 30/10/2017 19:45

Hi all, have been lurking for a little while but now that I'm due to do week 3 run 1 tomorrow I feel like I'm justified in seeking support.

I've done pretty much no exercise for the last 13 years so running is all a bit of a shock to the system. Have surprised myself though with how much I like being out - ideally first thing before it gets light - and just having a bit of head space before the school run/work chaos begins!

Am literally petrified at the idea of running 3 whole minutes (sounds ridiculous when some of you are running over 30 minutes) Really not sure I'm going to manage it (even with Jo Whily in my ear) but am desperate to keep with the program and to be doing 'proper' runs by Christmas. Any hints from more seasoned runners would be very much appreciated
Thank you.Flowers

SagelyNodding · 30/10/2017 20:30

Woohoo! Well done Lady and welcome Serendipity! I also was amazed I could run for 3 minutes without stopping! Even now at the end of week 6 I feel like giving up around 2.30... Can't really give many tips except have something to listen to, don't look at your watch too much and celebrate your successes!

MothQuandary · 30/10/2017 23:50

Welcome Serendipity. I remember being scared of 3 minutes (a whole fortnight ago!) but it wasn’t as bad as I’d thought and now I can run 5 minutes. Every week it’s been the same so far: amazement that I have completed a week and absolute terror when contemplating the next week. I like JW. She is so enthusiastic, bless her. I don’t mind being slightly patronised because I feel like a fat baby anyway.

Sounds like you are doing really well, Sagely. I couldn’t be doing any sort of run with a 6 year old!

Brilliant, Lady!!! One day that will be me! Do stick with us. We want to hear how you’re getting on. And this thread would be no good without some experienced voices to let us know what it’s like on the other side, while we’re still struggling with 5 minute runs.

Hello Losing. Wherever you are on the program, it’s certainly ahead of me!

I completed Week 4 today. It was OK - not terrible and not great, but I felt really pleased to have completed another week. And then I realized that I have to do a 20 minute run next week. Shock I don’t think I have ever run for 20 minutes, not even at school. Honestly, if I can run for 20 minutes by the end of next week, I will be absolutely amazed.

Woohoo - so did week 3 run 1 and survived! What's more I kind of actually enjoyed it. I kept the pace nice and slow, remembered to breathe and just listened to my music and the pound of my feet on the ground - beginning to feel like a real runner nowSmile Then foolishly looked ahead - 20 minutes in only another 5 runs - Ahhhh. Best make the most of those 3 min runs! Well done to everyone on this thread - some really motivating posts. Now if anyone could tell me when I'll start being less wobbly that would be great it would probably help if I ate lessBlush

MothQuandary · 31/10/2017 11:57

Serendipity I feel fatter and wobblier than I did at the start of wk1.
Obviously, I’ve never moved enough to notice the wobbliness before. The only thing that will get rid of the wobbles for me are planks and tricep dips and weights and whatnot but I cannot be arsed. One thing at a time!

Serendipitystardust · 31/10/2017 14:19

Moth I am starving after running so am eating more than ever - I figure I'll get used to the exercise first and then address eating habits. In my naivety before starting C25k, I thought I'd also do the 30 day shred DVD on my running days - ha ha - one day maybeSmile

TheWorldIsMyCakePop · 31/10/2017 20:21

Hi All, still here but my foot is still niggling, so not been out for a while. Will have a go Thursday or Friday and see how things go.

Well done to everyone!

MothQuandary · 31/10/2017 20:48

Oh, sorry your foot is still bothering you, CakePop. It’s a good reason to buy new shoes, anyway, in case it is plantar fasciitis. There doesn’t seem to be much else you can do, from what (little) I’ve read.
