Posted too soon... managed 8 miles this morning but it nearly killed me -very short of breath, not sure if it is the cold air or if I'm going down with something but it took me 70 minutes to run the last 9kms.

It was really frosty this morning when I went out.

Hoping to do a short run tomorrow-was thinking 5k ish. That should be OK shouldn't it?

FiftyNineOhEight · 01/12/2016 15:23

I have now seen the tee shirts for Sunday's run (which are only handed out to finishers). The thought of a jolly red top will get me round!

Theonlyoneiknow · 01/12/2016 16:03

Wahoooo 5908 I hope the weather is nice for you! The last couple of races I've done have had mugs/buffs instead of medals

bambino2014 · 02/12/2016 15:49

Hello everyone
I've just started running about 6 weeks ago and enjoying it, previously I cycled but it takes up too much time when you have a child. Anyway I am considering a half marathon in march I have been running 15-20 miles a week for the last couple of weeks on average 10 minute miles. Can I realisticly call you do a half marathon in 10 weeks? My friends think I'm mad and not very supportive so asking for advice? Also been looking at some new running clothes as been using my lovely gore cycling jerseys they have pockets for your phone- running tops just don't seem to have them big enough or am I missing something??
Thanks 👍

emummy · 02/12/2016 16:27

I think you should be able to do it. What length of run have you got up to? If you can just gradually increase your long run distance every week, up to at least 10 miles you'll be fine.
The only thing I have with a big enough pocket for my phone is my Gore gilet, otherwise I put my phone in the rear pocket of my running tights/capris, I only buy the ones with a big enough pocket for my phone, which at the moment are all Ronhill.
Good luck with your training, half marathons are my favourite distance.

bambino2014 · 02/12/2016 16:50

Thanks emummy....tge longest in one go is 6 miles- I guess if I increase it each week I'll be there. Feeling inspired by a friend who's lost lots of weight doing it then thinking am I crazy when I talk to other friends!???

londonmummy1966 · 02/12/2016 17:25

Good luck for the weekend fifty enjoy the red t shirt at the end...

HI bambino I bought a wallet that hooks over your waistband and is held in place with very strong magnets - means that I can run in anything with out worrying about pockets. I'll see if I can dig out a link - it was on Amazon - it wasn't cheap but with Christmas coming....

Why don't you try 8 miles next week and see how it goes? I've got a couple of training plans I could send you if you PM me that you could pick up from where you are and get you to a half in March.

It amazes me bambino how unsupportive people can be! I have a friend who does long bike races, I would hate that but I am never anything but encouraging when she talks about it. Come and talk to us, we'll give you plenty of support!

bambino2014 · 02/12/2016 21:39

Thanks Ladies I Will Try And Do 8 miles in the next few days. I'm not really crap but have mixed feelings. The sense of achievement is driving me to do it!! I find it really inspirational seeing what you can achieve. I think I might just stick to this thread rather than mentioning it to anyone...bit embarrassing really to get the reaction I did. Angry

stilllearnin · 03/12/2016 07:46

Morning bambino Your friends are jealous -seriously!

I gave myself the week off. I'm a bit annoyed with myself, but a month long period, earache and now a cold...I just wanted to be in bed! Pondering a run this morning though as next week is manic - or maybe just one more day off!

FiftyNineOhEight · 04/12/2016 16:17

I survived! I had a lovely chatty run at the back with a MNer I met a few years ago when a bunch of us teamed up to do a WOLF run. We didn't break any records, but we had fun (and even overtook a couple of people towards the end). The highlight was an additional drinks station outside a pub near the finish - the little glass of prosecco they handed out did the trick Smile

emummy · 04/12/2016 17:16

Well done Fiftynine! All races should hand out prosecco, sounds like the perfect sports drink!

londonmummy1966 · 04/12/2016 18:38

Brilliant fifty can't beat a morning with a half marathon and some fizz.....Wine

Was feeling really tired so skived parkrun yesterday but got out and did a 10 miler this afternoon - took me 2 hours though so slowing down a bit. Still the last proper long run of my forties so I guess I'm allowed to

OP posts:
madgingermunchkin · 04/12/2016 19:41

Well done fifty

bambino it is entirely possible. I did it on 5 weeks notice. I didn't break records, but considering it was a night run in the Cairngorms I was chuffed. The furthest I'd run before signing up was 5 miles. During that 5 weeks prep I managed one 10 mile run.

bambino2014 · 04/12/2016 20:17

Madginger that is so impressive!!!!
Blimey fiftynine 👍👍👍👍

FiftyNineOhEight · 04/12/2016 21:43

I don't recommend it, by the way. Unless you want to be slow and sore. I am off to re-acquaint myself with a foam roller Grin

Well done Fifty, hope the roller did the trick and you're not too sore today.

I've finally definitely decided against the half next weekend. This last month my running has gone to pot and I'm not sure why. The month before I was going great guns, PBs and feeling great. Then the last run of parkruns I've struggled, felt exhausted and yesterday I had to walk half a santa run with DD, we'd planned on doing the 10k and did 5 instead. I've been eating a lot better, but my sleeps not been great but it rarely is, so I just don't know.

That's definitely doable bambino. I have a flip belt which I quite like but don't love the look of, but you can stash a lot in it, it just looks a bit lumpy. I don't need extra lumpiness around my stomach, got that covered anyway Grin. I've a few winter tops with a pocket in the back but I don't find they tend to be very big, more for keys etc that bigger modern phones.

Theonlyoneiknow · 05/12/2016 09:45

chutney that's exactly how I felt earlier on this year. I ended up at the GP as I just felt tired all the time and turned out I'm low in iron - have felt much better since being on supplements. Might be worth a try?

Well done fifty !!!

SlipperyJack · 05/12/2016 09:51

I've just seen this thread in Active - seemed rude not to join....

Hello fifty! Thank you for keeping me company yesterday Smile I hope you had some more prosecco once you got home? Stairs are not my friends today - I will also be enjoying myself with a foam roller later.

londonmummy1966 · 05/12/2016 12:01

chutney another vote for seeing the doc - I had a year when I couldn't run more than 4k and it turned out that I too had iron deficiency - might be worth taking some Floradix in the meantime anyway? (you can get pills if you don't like the taste of the liquid - always reminds me of a compost heap....)

OP posts:
Theonlyoneiknow · 05/12/2016 12:38

I find this one doesn't errrrr bung me up like some iron supplements can

High five Slippery I didn't recognise you with that shiny new name! My hips are hurting today. And my knees. And my ankles.
