I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

Was she checked for concussion bruffin

lljkk · 06/02/2017 22:10

The latest purchase is Aquasphere Kayenne. They feel great on my face in the house, the adjustment mechanism is So Clever, but I couldn't stop 'em leaking.

Zoggs Athena: DD's (many yrs old model) did work ok but started leaking... a newer pair just hurt after 10 lengths, got lost, anyway.

Elite fastskin: too small for my eye sockets! My eyelashes rubbed on the inside. Never even got to the pool with those ones.

Zoggs (?) Predator Flex: doing ok, best ones I have, but seems like I need 'em uncomfortably tight to not leak.

My latest theory is that goggles only work when they are dry put on, if I take them off in pull for any reason they'll leak bad thereafter. Also my fat hair makes the hat slip, so isn't helping, but I'm not sure what to do about that, I don't want to get hair cut until April.

bruffin · 06/02/2017 22:11

Will keep an eye on her Hissy. She has film of it and it wasnt obvious what happened.

TeenyfTroon · 06/02/2017 23:03

Laughing at Hissy and the offer to pay someone to swim the first 600m. I was swimming tonight wondering if Olympic swimmers have the same problem. I would only win the last race of the day, assuming I'd swum in every race up to it. And assuming I could swim fast.
My goggles don't leak if I put them on dry. Hopeless if I have to take them off in the water.
Bruffin's DD - sending sympathy.

Hissy · 06/02/2017 23:41

I think the better we get, the shorter the Hell Zone is.

They'd warm up, possibly a bit in the endless pool I'd imagine

Hissy · 06/02/2017 23:46

Our teacher last weds asked if we'd want to do timed laps... we (women) all said yes, because we're all warmed up etc and in the zone... blokey who'd switched in to see if he was ready for our group looked a bit doubtful... I did ask if he was good enough to swim like a girl... 😂

BestIsWest · 07/02/2017 17:38

Hope she's ok today Bruffin.

Do you get faster when you're in the zone then?

880m today in 35 minutes. All crawl and only stopped once to adjust my goggles. I am getting there but seriously need longer now. I could happily have gone further.

bruffin · 07/02/2017 18:51

her face is numb , she has been to miu and they said go to a&e if not better in 48 hours

SingingAvocado · 08/02/2017 11:33

How is your daughter today, Bruffin? It was my daughter's birthday yesterday so she requested I didn't go swimming so that she could open her pressies in our bed in the morning! Back tomorrow.

bruffin · 08/02/2017 16:51

Not very good, she has a nasty cold on top of it now Sad

My class today was all strokes which meant 2 of each legs only, 2 of each arms only and 2 of each full stroke. I really havent got the energy for the 2 lengths butterfly and my shoulder doesnt like butterfly very much either. Class was 48 lengths and then i did another 32 afterwards to do 2k.

Hissy · 08/02/2017 21:56

Poor thing! Keep an eye on her and take her back if no improvement tomorrow

Jeez swimming is tough at the moment, this cold/bug I've been carrying has knocked me for six.

I struggled to get to 1000m today, then it all kicked in and I slowed down and swam until they closed. 2k.

Lesson tomorrow, so that will be another 1250 or thereabouts

rightsofwomen · 09/02/2017 10:42

How is your DD bruff ?

I have had the lurgy so didn't exercise for THREE WHOLE DAYS [twitch twitch].

But I went for a swim today and strangely, as I was feeling a bit pathetic I thought I'd just take it easy. Well, it seems that's the way to do it. I think I did actually get in THE ZONE and my time was pretty fast for me (1K in 27 mins). Pool pretty clear so up and down rather than round and round.

I've been doing 100m w/o pull buoy and 100m with so I can practice my bilateral breathing.

bruffin · 09/02/2017 11:11

She is getting the feeling back, so is getting better although still stuffed with cold. but this lurgy is reall not nice, so sympathy rights and hissy.I couldnt be bothered to get up today for a swim, nor could friend so we didnt go, it is too cold and dark at the moment. I cant wait for when its light in the mornings to go to work and go for an early swim.
I keep meaning to try evening sessions, but again dont feel like going out after work at the moment.

rightsofwomen · 09/02/2017 11:16

Does she have a black eye?

I have to drop DS1 at the bus stop in the morning so staying in bed not an option. Get up, pop my cossie on, throw my stuff in a bag (including knickers, don't forget the knickers!), and off we go. God, that makes it sound all skippy and joyful - it's not, I am NOT a morning person but the logistics work well. The pool is opposite the bus stop.

As a night owl the late swims suit me. Even though I'm not back home till 10.20pm or so I've still got some down time before I go to bed.

bruffin · 09/02/2017 11:31

Yes black eye, although thankfully not too obvious.

Swimming pool is 10 minutes walk from where i live, but you have to go through park to get to it, I dont drive, but it would still be quicker to walk rather than drive.

KanyesVest · 09/02/2017 17:13

God, your poor dd, bruffin, hope she's on the mend.

I had a horrible viral thing last week, with added gastric unpleasantness so I didn't risk the pool. Back in it today, 44lengths which were reasonably comfortable.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/02/2017 17:41

More black eye sympathy from me. I'm out of action as well as have the cold lurgy. It's annoying as I was away for a week as well and I feel back to square one (again). I think I just need to accept that things get bitty between December and February.
Have been to the gym twice though; can manage lifting weights with a cold but can't face the pool!

KanyesVest · 10/02/2017 17:06

I was a bit delayed at work today so only got to the pool for half an hour and 30ish lengths. Probably a blessing in disguise, between swimming and the rowing machine I was using earlier in the week my poor arms don't know what's hit them!

Happy weekend everyone!

BestIsWest · 10/02/2017 21:10

900m today, furthest yet in just under 35 minutes.

I'm trying to improve my breathing. I can do bilateral every 3 strokes easily now and managed a couple of lengths breathing every 5 strokes. The difference in speed was amazing.

Hissy · 11/02/2017 10:05

By all means practice doing 7 - 5 and 3 breaths, it does help lung capacity at the outset, but ultimately you need to make it easier for yourself, not harder.

If you're slower on 3 breaths could it be that you're lifting your head to breathe (facing forward) rather than turning to the side (eyeline no higher than the lane rope)?

Lifting your head makes the legs drop, they then are in deeper water which is harder to kick through.

The time is good for 900. Did you stop at all? If you can cut any rest down to a few breaths only (10-12) you will get into anaerobic zone somewhere about 700m or so and then everything is just amazing.

I'd suggest slowing your stroke down a little, working on the head position and get comfortable with the 3 breaths bilateral. It becomes second nature and you don't need to worry about it, which then leaves you space to work on individual parts of your stroke and seeing massive improvements bit by bit.

Hissy · 11/02/2017 10:07

The other thing you can do is slot in any stroke to just keep moving, gets you into the zone faster then you can really get some distance

BestIsWest · 11/02/2017 10:25

I did stop once or twice but just to adjust goggles really and did two lengths of backstroke. I get what you say about lifting the head. I'm trying to rotate my shoulders more. I think there is some lifting going on though.

Can't imagine doing 7 strokes per breath!

I'm really limited to 35 minutes maximum if I go lunchtime but I live too far away from the gym I've joined to go any other time. I'll have to fork out and go to a local pool in the evenings/weekends and see how long I can go for.

KanyesVest · 11/02/2017 10:31

Is bilateral breathing just down to practice (and technique)? I can't get the hang of breathing on my left at all, my comfortable pattern has always been right side every 4 strokes. Now that I am taking fewer, shorter breathers at lap ends, I feel like I can't breathe out enough, if that makes sense. I don't feel short of breath, more that I've too much too exhale. I've tried breathing out while my face is under but then I get a mouthful of water when I turn to inhale.

bruffin · 11/02/2017 10:39

i always dis bilateral breathing but my teacher said the asa have been looking at breathing on 4 again.

BestIsWest · 11/02/2017 10:45

Kanye, I breath out very slowly under water, making the outbreath last for the whole of the time my face is under then a sharp intake when I turn my head. Sometimes my mouth is half full of water but I think that's considered ok.
