I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

My usual pool is closed for 2 weeks

this is the pool that I have to pay every time I go (its usually empty/quiet, and i know everyone there, it's home Grin )

I have to go to the one where there were lane walkers, where I was bullied out of the lane... The one i have a £20/month membership and could swim as much as I'd like a week... But I feel sick. My agoraphobia is hitting me HARD

But I have to go. Have to. I am so sick of feeling like this, i need to sort it out, but no idea where to start... Well I do, but its going to cost money..

I have a (schoolmum) friend who does Cognitive Hynotherapy, I don't want to put her under pressure for giving me a cheap price etc, but do you think I ought to ask her ? See what it would entail and costs etc?

I'm ok when I actually set foot outside the door and get into the car, but up till that point i feel physically ill! Unless I'm going with someone.

Open water swim in in July, but there is an intro to Open water TI worksession in May in Eastleigh.

Boyf's team are negotiating sponsorship and entry, so I'll wait to see what's what for the short term.

Lakes around here open in April, so I will have to see what's what, buy the wetsuit and see if I can afford the workshops...

rightsofwomen · 14/03/2017 12:43

Oh hissy you poor thing (saying that not in a patronising way), that sounds quite debilitating.

I would definitely contact the school mum friend. Can you contact her online as if you were just a regular customer that didn't know her?
That then leaves the ball in her court as to whether she has any sort of mates rates. A general enquiry as to her rates is fine and it will be fine (if it's out of budget) to just be honest and tell her.

How easy is it to arrange to go with someone? For me, my sport fits in around the rest of my life so I tend not to make plans with people.

Hissy · 14/03/2017 12:49

Her phone is buggered so have to facebook, it's ok that she knows its me. Have sent the message...

I'll go with anyone, Grin, i do drag my son sometimes, he's my safety blanket :) but I know that I can't make my life rest on getting other people to go with. Swimming is such an isolating sport, come with me for a couple of hours, I will swim without even looking at you until I have done what I want to do...

Boyf is good, he comes with me, competes with me etc, and its fun, but he has a business to run and stuff, so I can only spend weekends with him really. Although he has said we can go to the pool near his house, just that the session times are a bit rubbish. he doesnt like lane walker pool, so hard for me to entice him over to go there. i am going to get him to come to the 50m pool in the next town though, so I will have a buddy then.

I'm going to text my fellow lesson buddy, see if she fancies going swimming one evening this week.

KathyBeale · 14/03/2017 12:53

Just sticking my head in to say hello. I love swimming but haven't been regularly for years. My son is a club swimmer and I have been inspired by him to get back into the water.

At the moment I go to a spin class on a Monday morning so I am going to try to swim after that, and also on Thursday mornings. I might add more as I get into it.

I have some really old prescription goggles that could do with an update, and I'd love a waterproof MP3 player. Any recommendations? Apologies if there are some further back - couldn't trawl through 40 pages of the thread!

SingingAvocado · 14/03/2017 14:31

Welcome Kathy. Some people have spoken about mp3 players, but I'm afraid I don't use them so can't recommend any.

Hissy hope the hypnotherapy can help you (and that the pool you like is fixed soon). A pity none of us here lives near enough to be a swim buddy!

I think we will need to start a new thread soon!

Hissy · 14/03/2017 16:18

It's expensive!

I'll check her out and have a conversation I think.

I also have my old therapist who helped me navigate the family/atrocious ex stuff.

The atrocious ex is a key ingredient of the agoraphobia, but it's years on now and I've had enough of it.

Hissy · 14/03/2017 16:31

I can't help on music player either, I'd be concerned it'd put me off my pace! I quite like the quiet time with myself actually.

Tbh, if it smart, the pool being out of action is forcing me to address this. So I have to go today. Son won't come with me.

Which is right too... I have to fix this.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 14/03/2017 16:45

hissy I'm sorry to hear you are struggling. Fair play to you for taking the steps to get help.

One step at a time. And I'm totally with you about the music (sorry I can't help there)....I think the sounds of bubbles and breathing and nothing except me and the rhythm of the strokes is very thereaputic.

Let us know how you get on.

lljkk · 14/03/2017 19:36

Hey @SingingAvocado, do you want to start the next thread? This has been a very nice thread so let's keep the encouragement going. Sorry, I am rubbish at thread titles!

Swimmity mcSwim Fitness mcFreaks? don't listen to me

SingingAvocado · 14/03/2017 20:00

Where's Hoppity Frogs who started this thread? I'm rubbish at titles too! Quite like iijkk's (topical!). My suggestion would be a more plodding 'Swim over to the Mumsnet Swimming Club'. Any other suggestions for an exciting new thread title?

BestIsWest · 14/03/2017 21:11

Yes please start a new thread. No idea for a title but this one will go pop in 12 posts time!

Hissy sorry to hear of your problems. Let us know how it went today.

I have got a bit of an ear infection I think, keep getting a sharp pain deep in my ear so I've not been this week and Friday will be my next chance.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 14/03/2017 21:35

Swimmy McSwimface! sorry I'm no better than lljkk

Sorry to hear you're struggling hissy, I wish I had some helpful advice to offer.

I swam on Sunday morning and last night, feeling more confident with front crawl. Tried to concentrate on really breathing out under water and letting the breathing in take care of itself. I'd read that it should help me feel less knackered! Seemed to make a bit of a difference but I'm yet to follow up one length with another straight away. Although I did manage much shorter rests in between lengths last night although it might be cheating alternating front crawl with breaststroke

rightsofwomen · 14/03/2017 21:41

My 2p worth - I quite like Swimming for fitness as a thread title as it says exactly what it is. I feel that a more funky title might put people off popping in, thinking it's a well established group.

I like how we've got more people on board ha ha ha

Igottastartthinkingbee · 14/03/2017 22:20

You're right rights! It always puts me off a thread if I haven't a clue what the title means (wasn't there a 'thread that no one responds to' x 100? I had absolutely no idea what was going on there!).

bruffin · 15/03/2017 00:10

It was me who mentioned MP3 . You can get cheap one on ebay or amazon for £15. It works perfectly well, just doesnt have a shuffle facility.

bruffin · 15/03/2017 00:15

like this one

Hissy · 15/03/2017 04:31

Got there 30 mins into the session, figuring that the splash and dash crew would have gone, or be going, so it'd thin out a bit. Good call.

I'd told myself half an hour and go. 1000m and go.

In the end I came away with 1650m. Mostly TI and in comfy chunks of 200m and 100s, plus a couple more for luck.

I'm happy with that, it went well. Going back on Thursday, maybe later with my son for him to work on his stroke etc.

BestIsWest · 15/03/2017 08:28

Well done Hissy. Now someone start that new thread.

rightsofwomen · 15/03/2017 08:54

1K done. Knackered after tough run last night. Pool quite empty though so got in the zone.

Now need to get in the work zone but it's such a beautiful day.

rightsofwomen · 15/03/2017 09:06

New thread!

Swimming is one of the best ways to get fit! It doesn't put too much pressure on your joints and it is a full body workout. Plus, you don't get sweaty so you don't realise how hard you're working until you're out! I've got an awesome post on my blog with tips about swimming in open water if anyone is interested! www.sundried.com/blogs/training/tips-for-swimming-in-open-water
