I've started swimming to get fit, does anybody else swim for fit? Can we encourage each other?

Went to lesson yesterday and we did butterfly, which was fun, but i only managed a full length with fins on. Didnt want to try to hard because of shoulder. Then did 38 lengths afterwards.

Went this morning and did 112 lengths in 6 minutes less than i did 110 last week then went to see osteopath who massaged my shoulder and said she went deeper this time. I have had much more movement in my shoulder this week, even just putting on a coat is so much easier
She said knitting would also cause this sort of repetative strain injury.

Hissy · 02/02/2017 11:40

Tummy was dodgy yesterday, so had to skip.

Have lesson today so that will be a hard session.. back in the pool again on Saturday with lovely boyf.

My cough and wheeze appear to be gone too!

BestIsWest · 02/02/2017 17:49

Back in the pool after 9 days off with a cold.
I managed 800m in 30 minutes which is a big improvement for me so I'm well pleased. Almost all front crawl except for 6 lengths with a kick board.
Going again tomorrow.
I used the noseclip on a strap an Vaseline so I hope that will do the trick.

Biking007 · 02/02/2017 21:06

After a couple of weeks out of the pool with a cold I did 1k tonight in 35mins all breast stroke, back stroke and float kicking so I was pleased with that. I did have to be brave and get in a lane with two young speed bucks and a large splashy fella but I held my ground and they were polite Grin

flamingnoravera · 02/02/2017 22:39

I did 1250m today, all crawl with no rests. I have never, ever managed a swim like that before. I've come from 100m crawl to this in in 6 months. I hit the zone at 600m too. Feeling proud.

SingingAvocado · 03/02/2017 07:22

Great news Flaming!

rightsofwomen · 04/02/2017 14:28

Let's just say I'm better at swimming than baking (got puff instead of shortcrust!)

That looks really tasty, love the rustic lookGrin Ive now got conjuntavitis, hoping it will be better for my wednesday swimming class

BestIsWest · 04/02/2017 15:02

Did another 600 yesterday in just under 25 minutes so I AM getting faster.

I'm going to aim to get to 1000 in 30 minutes then maybe book mysel some lessons.

What length pool do you all swim in?
I'm swimming in a 20 metre pool so I have a theory that that is slowing me down - more stops, you see Smile.

We have a 50 metre pool locally but it's a few years since I've swum in that and I'd have to be a bit fitter. I can still remember the sheer panic of getting halfway down and realising there was still another 25 metres to go the first time.

BestIsWest · 04/02/2017 15:03

Looks Yummy to me. I'd eat it.

rightsofwomen · 04/02/2017 17:07

best my pool is 25m
I don't think I've ever swim in a 50m one. Must seem long!

1.1k in 31 mins today.

bruffin · 04/02/2017 17:16

I sometimes go to the Olympic pool at Stratford which is 50m. It does seem long to start with, but i love it. Its a just a touch too far to travel to regularly. My dd 19 goes on a Monday to diving classes there, I did go with her once and it wasnt too busy, but it costs me nearly a £10 to go after work so an expensive swim.
Our pool is 25m

BestIsWest · 04/02/2017 17:45

I do remember loving it too Bruffin. I need to build up my confidence and stamina first. I'm also swimming in a very quiet pool, there's never been more than 4 of us in there at the same time yet so I've forgotten all the lane etiquette.

flamingnoravera · 04/02/2017 19:28

There is a rumour that my local pool is to close, this seems to happen every five or so years. I would be so sad if this happens because it is warm and close by. If I had to get into a cold pool and drive 3miles to get to it I will lose my will to swim.

Yesterday I watched swimmers in an outdoor pool in Bristol whilst I ate a lovely lunch. It looked bloody freezing and at £20 a swim (including sauna and steam room and hot tub) I was bloody glad I had already done my 1250m in my local warm pool and could now eat my weight in lunch instead of shivering with the hardy ones.

There is local opposition mounting to the possible closure- I shall have to join in (I am not a joiner inner) to fight for it to stay open. It is losing £65k a year apparently, it is LA owned and privately run. Any ideas?

OrangeSunset · 05/02/2017 20:22

flaming I think I know the pool you mean in Bristol. It IS freezing when you get in, but keep moving and it's ok. And the water is just so wonderfully clear and non-chlorine-y.

Our local pool is supposed to be marked for closure (it's not warm so can't be the same one you're referring to) as they want to rebuild a nearby leisure centre and add a pool there. To be honest anything new would be a huge improvement. BUT I should image ours is loosing similar amounts of money, and that's because it's a shambles. The changing rooms are constantly FILTHY (I went one evening last week and complained - apparently they hadn't been cleaned since morning as no female staff available). So that puts people off paying to go. Also, the times when people can swim are hugely restricted as they have so many schools visiting, and club use in the evening. I can swim there at 8pm on a Monday or Weds (closed for clubs between 6pm and 8pm) and from 9pm on a Tues and Thurs. No-one can be bothered to set off swimming at 9pm. Weekends and day-times are equally ridiculous i.e. you can't swim before 9am on a Saturday morning. I want to have been and gone by then to get on with the day. So no doubt they are missing a huge market due to those 2 factors.

I am really encouraged by those who are saying how much they have improved in 6 months. I was able to do 400m as part of a Tri last year, then have lapsed over the winter. Got in and did 200m the other day and nearly passed out. Would love to be able to do 1k, and maybe that is achievable after all..

rightsofwomen · 06/02/2017 10:12

orange I often swim at 9.30pm. Monday's is Ladies night which seems to have its own set of rules, but the other nights are fine - you only get the people who really want to swim.

It suits me. DS2 (7) is in bed, DS1 (17) is happy to mind him. I like that I don't need to worry about looking presentable afterwards, just come home and flop about. I couldn't get there for 8pm.

Trust me, if I (a hardened disliker of swimming) can get up to 1K AND enjoy it, anyone can!

OrangeSunset · 06/02/2017 12:08

Ha yes the enjoyment is key! Just going to keep at it

TeenyfTroon · 06/02/2017 19:14

I swim on Mondays at 9pm and Fridays at 8pm. I really like it - used to go at 7am and evenings are less crowded. I don't ask myself if I want to go, as the answer would definitely be no, I just go. I'm always glad afterwards.
I've been following this thread and was really relieved to hear that others don't get 'in the zone' straight away. I kept thinking it was really weird that the first 20 or so lengths were so hard. My breathing doesn't seem to sort itself out for ages!

rightsofwomen · 06/02/2017 19:20

I don't think I've ever been in the zone! It does usually take me a few lengths to warm up but there's no zoning out!
Not like I do with running. Interestingly I was taking to a friend who is opposite to me; natural swimmer, not so natural runner, and we both find the zone in our more comfortable sport.
This is why I feel it's so important for people to find an exercise they enjoy.

TeenyfTroon · 06/02/2017 19:28

I so wish I could run myself into the zone. Would love to know if it's more to do with technique or physique.
I am very conscious of symmetry and streamlined-ness (what word am I searching for?!) when I'm swimming, but when I'm running I'm just struggling to keep going!

bruffin · 06/02/2017 21:35

Dd has just come home from diving with a black eye. They were trying back dives off the 3m for the first time and she managed to knee herself in the face.

lljkk · 06/02/2017 21:46

Ouch!

My eyes look funny 2nite b/c seems like the only way to avoid leaks is to have goggles on very tight -- so tight I can only stand them for about 15-20 minutes. My quest for non-leak comfy goggles continues apace.

Hissy · 06/02/2017 21:48

Oh poor thing!!! Is she ok?

Re The Zoneâ„¢... if I could PAY someone to swim the first 600m of my sessions, I would!

I've had a little cold the past week or so, so I really struggled on Saturday, it was really hard! I couldn't breathe properly, so worked really hard on back stroke.

Arms still moaning..

bruffin · 06/02/2017 21:52

Says here face is numb, shes gone to bed, she is really tired and the trains were up the creek so not very happy. . I had conjuntivitis and a cold this weekend so didnt swim,.

bruffin · 06/02/2017 21:53
