There's a couple of beefy blokes who wear these face masks on the cross trainer. Obviously while working in out in heavy jersey tracksuits. Is it some kind of weight lifter fat burning thing? They look like 90's ravers Confused .

Just once or every time? Sounds like a test

A few times. First saw them over the summer.

Actually, I saw one of them wearing one while using weights too. I'd ask them but they're huge and scary looking.

Oxygen depletion. Like what they wear if planning to go mountain climbing to get used to atmospheric changes. A young lad was wearing one in my gym recently doing cardio and weights and got asked not to use it. They are bloody stupid.

That's it swoosh! A quick Google has led me to hypoxic training.

I saw a guy in the gym once wearing one of these and asked him. He was an MMA fighter, and said they simulate altitude training by reducing oxygen intake.

It's called, originally, a training mask
It makes it harder to breathe, which increases your lung capacity and oxygen efficiently

Oh bugger! X post x 3 with swoosh

Could they be doing a fitness test? He's not here to ask but I think my son said he had to wear an oxygen mask and run on a treadmill when he did his pre-fitness test for the marines. The test was at a local gym

RJnomaaaaaargh · 20/10/2015 20:58

Swoosh has it. A couple of fighters at my gym do this. The majority who want to look less erm - obvious - just put their mouth guards in which isn't quite as effective but still makes it harder to breathe.

If it was a VO2 max test, the mask would be plugged into a machine, which would be processing what he is exhaling.

The training mask makes it a bit like breathing through a thick scarf. Your lungs have to work harder to suck the air in, and your body has to get used to working with less oxygen.
This means when you aren't wearing the mask, it feels easier.
A bit like doing training runs with ankle weights on, so when you race without them, it is easier!

They look like the MMA type tbh.
