Best exercises to help with running? Core and cardio

I was wondering if you had any advice on the best non-running exercises to help my running regime? Especially core exercises. And are there any other cardio exercises that act as good companions to running that you can substitute for a run?

I am unfit and overweight, and feeling really inspired right now to train for a 10km and get back on track, so any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks! Smile

Swimming if you want another form of cardio. It helps with core strength and works your upper body in a way that just doesn't happen when you are running.

Pilates is fantastic for core strength, yoga will make you flexible with some core improvements too, free weights will make you strong overall. It really depends on what you enjoy, but supplementing running with something that will give you a strong core and posterior chain is a very good idea.
