I thought it might be of interest to anybody living within striking distance of Hilly Fields that our local Parkrun group is starting up a Junior Parkrun to take place every Sunday at 9.30am - first one next Sunday (10th May).

Parkrun is free - you just need to register before going the first time so you have a barcode to get your race time logged.

The Race Director is a local PE teacher. The distance is 2km. All ages from 4 to 14 welcome.

Disclaimer: I'm not a runner (dodgy knees) but my husband is a stalwart of HF Parkrun. They're a great bunch and it seems like a fantastic way to build up fitness and get into the exercise habit. Hilly Fields is a lovely spot to run in too, with a nice playground for the little ones while older siblings are running, and a good cafe near the race start/finish.

If you don't live in SE4, there are Junior Parkruns starting up all over the place. Just check the Parkrun website for details.

My local one, Highbury Fields N1, just started doing one about 2 months ago. My two dds love it, my 10yr old runs with her friend and is always trying to beat her previous time, and is already saying she is getting into training for her first marathon when she is old enough (I've done 2). I run it also with my 5 yr old, so we are usually in the last few to finish but she still always gets a big cheer when she crosses the line.

I think they are a brilliant idea.

Just watched the first run starting off. Dozens of children! Such a lovely sight to see them all running (and in some cases toddling) round the park. Well done to the Parkrun team!

Great to hear. My two have started our local junior Parkrun recently and are hooked. There were over 150 children today and it was fantastic to see everyone enjoying themselves.
