Would anyone like to join me in training for a half marathon?

It was a thread on this board that basically got me through the C25K programme a couple of years ago. Lots of lovely supportive women pushing each other on.

Now, I've just started training for a half marathon that's at the end of May. I was a fairly confident runner before Christmas as I was doing 12k on my long run, even though I wasn't training with the HM in mind, but then took three weeks out over Christmas and seemed to lose all my fitness and go back to square one almost overnight Angry. Still not back at the level I was before then but at least I'm feeling enthusiastic again, running 4 times a week (8.5k the longest run so far, though) and I need a goal so I've started a 12-week HM programme and today is the end of my first week.

Is anyone doing anything similar who might like to form a virtual support group and get a bit obsessed together?

Amazing Blue!! Cracking time, I'm so pleased for you Smile

I'm not running a half yet, but my 10 mile off roader is in a fortnight - I'm just waiting for my buddy to come over. We're going to run 10 miles this evening, then I'm sort-of-tapering.

emummy · 07/06/2015 16:29

Brilliant blue well done!

BlueChampagne · 07/06/2015 17:47

Off road 10 miler sounds great Thursday and probably my preferred distance if truth be told. Hope you have a good run.

holmessweetholmes · 07/06/2015 19:29

Didn't do my HM today. I've had my cold for over a week and think it might have developed into bronchitis. Managed a lovely long walk up Wansfell(though was a bit wheezy after), but wouldn't have managed a 5k run, never mind a 21k one. Good luck everyone else - hope it's going well.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 07/06/2015 20:30

Well done Blue, great time! That's brilliant Grin

I managed to do ten miles this evening - a bit slow and stop/start: I took a drink with me because it was hot and sunny and stopped at the three mile point and instead of sipping a couple of mouthfuls as I'd planned to do I glugged half of it down, which not surprisingly meant I ended up with a tummy ache for most of the rest of my run.

But I'm glad I did the distance, and for every bad run there's a good one waiting to make up for it Smile

holmes I'm really sorry that you had to miss your HM. Wishing you a speedy recovery, and hope to hear you are running again soon Flowers

ThursdayLast · 07/06/2015 20:55

holmes Thanks I hope you feel better soon.

My bud and I did our 10 miles. It wasn't the worst, but it wasn't a good one either. I wore a vest style top and from about mile 5 it rubbed against my rib cage and my inner arm Sad.
I also felt like I needed a rather urgent poo for about half the run Blush.
Oh, and one eye wouldn't stop streaming where I got suncream in it.

But y'know - it's on the garmin so it counts!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 07/06/2015 21:57

Thursday and I am deffo stealing "it's on the garmin so it counts" Grin

emummy · 08/06/2015 09:10

Sorry you were too unwell to do the hm holmes, very unfair after all your hard work. Glad you had a nice walk instead.

Well done on those 10 mile runs ladies, keep up the good work! Am trying to plan out what I'll do each week now, next hm not till September. Vaguely looking around for another race to do over summer.

BlueChampagne · 08/06/2015 13:03

I think you were very sensible holmes. If you can find another one to do in the next few months, then your training won't be wasted.

ThursdayLast · 13/06/2015 19:27

Hello!
Everyone ok?
I did a v slow and steady parkrun this morning - really looking forward to my race next weekend now Smile

emummy · 14/06/2015 07:14

Glad your ok Thursday, good luck with that race! Am heading out to do about 7 miles this morning, doing part of the route for September's half. Will start proper training for it at the end of this month.

holmessweetholmes · 14/06/2015 09:35

I'm not sure, BlueChampagne - am beginning to think that a HM isn't meant to be. That's three times I've failed to make it to the starting line now...

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 14/06/2015 21:26

Hello everyone Smile

Surely the next HM you register for will be the right one for you holmes!

A week to go for me. Training/tapering completely up the spout, I managed 4 miles on Tuesday, then didn't have any spare time to run again until today. Completely miscalculated and what was supposed to be about 8 miles became 10.25 on the garmin plus about another half-mile walk home. I was really slow - we were away for the weekend so I ate and drank far too much (cooked breakfasts, three course dinners, wine with lunch and dinner when I am normally very abstemious...).

I will try to get a short run in during the week, then it's the 5 on Friday, 8.1 on Saturday and the big one on Sunday Grin

thereisnofinway · 17/06/2015 15:55

Sorry I've not posted for a while. Well done to all the HMers and sorry to hear you weren?t well for yours Holmes, better luck next time. Ohone that sounds a challenge!

I've done my two 12m training runs now, the first I went out too fast and the last 1.5 miles were mostly walking. The second I managed to run all the way round as I went out much steadier ? so even though I ran the whole thing the overall time was actually slower. I've got a hilly 10k race on Sunday and then my half the Sunday after that. I just went out for a run at lunchtime and on the way back I realised only 4 more runs till my half now, yikes.

ThursdayLast · 17/06/2015 19:12

Good luck for your 10k thereis Grin

And you too ohone you total crazy lady!

I just did my only run this week - I'm calling it tapering Grin 5k round the woods with the dog. Pilates tomorrow, volunteer at parkrun on sat, 10 miles that I'm slightly dreading on Sunday.
I've had to start wearing my knee support since upping my mileage Sad

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 17/06/2015 19:59

I am feeling a bit wobbly about this weekend, to be honest. I've been super-busy, and haven't managed to run at all since Sunday. I'm calling it tapering Grin

ThursdayLast · 17/06/2015 21:28

Tapering Grin I'm all for tapering!
I forgot to add my fun photo from tonight's run

Would anyone like to join me in training for a half marathon?
holmessweetholmes · 18/06/2015 08:38

Right. That's it. I now seem to have a stress fracture in my right foot. Must have caused a weakness by over training, which then went when I was walking the dog (have only run once in the last 3 weeks). This is the third time I've had a stress fracture while training for a longer race. Good luck with all your HMs, everyone! 10k max for me from now on.

emummy · 18/06/2015 11:27

Oh holmes, that's just not fair! Sorry about your foot, I hope it settles down soon and you can still enjoy your running.

ThursdayLast · 18/06/2015 13:49

Oh holmes I'm sorry.

holmessweetholmes · 18/06/2015 14:45

Thanks for the sympathy! It's not agony unless I'm barefoot but walking my energetic dog isn't easy!

GeekLove · 18/06/2015 15:16

Hello! Can I join you?
I seemed to have signed up for the Tough Guy in October which is a half-marathon obstacle course - previously I've only done 10K Wolf Run before!

Finding time to do long runs is tricky - I've done 11K in 1h 11min and most of the time run twice weekly - a 5.6 and 7.8K long run.

What I am doing is focusing on speeding up and hill sprints (ha ha!).
got myself to 9'47" per mile now.

Will plan longer runs with DH on boy-free weekends.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 18/06/2015 21:15

Oh pooh holmes that's terrible Sad

Love the picture Thursday Smile

GEEK!!!! lovely to see you fellow wolef Grin

Not long now thereis!

Theonlyoneiknow · 19/06/2015 10:13

Hi, I've just stumbled across this thread and would like to join the race chat!

I've got my first HM next Sunday 28th June. I haven't been following any kind of training programme but run 3 times a week (10-12 miles on a Saturday, 8km on a Tuesday and 5km on a Thursday). I entered it on a whim!

I haven't a scooby about tapering or what I need to take with me on the race. Normally during my long weekend run I just take a little handheld running bottle of water and one energy gel. Maybe a sports drink would be better than water but worried it might make me feel sick. Am also concerned about 'toilet' issues as these sometimes affect me on my longer runs.

Any tips? Should I still do a long run tomorrow if the event isn't until next weekend but maybe just do one shorter run next week?

The course profile is either up or down - no flat! But my runs include hills so hopefully i'll be okay on that side of things.

I've ran two 10k races recently but really pushed myself and got a PB of 49:49 (so happy to scrape in sub 50!).

Thanks in advance for any advice
TOOIK :)

ThursdayLast · 19/06/2015 10:42

Hi theonly! I wouldn't personally do a long run this weekend with a HM next weekend. Maybe a nice 5k to keep your legs warm, but I find I really benefit from the rest.

As for water etc, I would stick with what you know. If water and a gel works for you now, then that's what will work for you on race day Grin resist temptation to try something new now!

That's a cracking 10k time btw.

Hello geek too!

I don't think my running bud us gonna make our 10 miler at the weekend Sad
