Would anyone like to join me in training for a half marathon?

It was a thread on this board that basically got me through the C25K programme a couple of years ago. Lots of lovely supportive women pushing each other on.

Now, I've just started training for a half marathon that's at the end of May. I was a fairly confident runner before Christmas as I was doing 12k on my long run, even though I wasn't training with the HM in mind, but then took three weeks out over Christmas and seemed to lose all my fitness and go back to square one almost overnight Angry. Still not back at the level I was before then but at least I'm feeling enthusiastic again, running 4 times a week (8.5k the longest run so far, though) and I need a goal so I've started a 12-week HM programme and today is the end of my first week.

Is anyone doing anything similar who might like to form a virtual support group and get a bit obsessed together?

Along the lines of 'bad dress rehearsal, good performance'!

BlueChampagne · 22/05/2015 21:50

A good run, I think, but marred by technology fail! Mapmyrun satellite lost me between miles 9 and 10, and thought I did 24.58 miles in1:57:31. I can assure you, that ain't the case! Howevere, having had OS maps out, I'll take 13 in that time, and may be a little more, because mapping tends to err on the conservative side. In which case, I'm very happy, and hope I don't suffer the inverse of lurking's theory.

Hello tapering!

What a nuisance Blue but sounds like a good run. That would make for a cracking half time!

I hate when technology goes wrong - I really have to talk myself into believing that it's good for me even if I can't upload it Grin

I have only run on Weds this week - my cold/sore throat combo turned into a temperature and total lethargy last night so I skived Pilates (then bumped into my teacher in the supermarket tiday obviously).

I'll try parkrun tomorrow, see if that gets me in the mood again.

BlueChampagne · 22/05/2015 22:04

Take it easy ThursdayLast and hope you feel better soon. I take it you're a Fforde fan!

holmessweetholmes · 23/05/2015 07:35

Parkrun for me this morning. Lovely morning for it too!

lurkingfromhome · 23/05/2015 09:34

I'm contemplating a very short run today and then a longer run tomorrow, although still probably just 10-12K. Mind you, I can contemplate all I like while sitting here in my pyjamas and that won't actually get the run done, will it, so putting on my running gear and stepping away from the computer would be a start Grin

Good lord - I tried running Parkrun on an empty stomach this morning for the first time. It was a nightmare - like putting your foot on the accelerator and nothing happening! Every step was a struggle and I almost stopped. It is as I suspected - I can do a really early morning run on no breakfast, but 9:00 is pushing it too far!

ThursdayLast · 23/05/2015 11:58

I got around but my lungs were screaming at me Grin
Yes Blue - some bugger got to ThursdayNext way before me, not that I've ever seen them!

emummy · 24/05/2015 18:34

Had nice easy run this morning, one week to go!

ThursdayLast · 25/05/2015 08:42

Well done emummy

How are you all feeling? I've just looked at the calendar and realised my notoriously difficult 10 mile off road race is 4 WEEKS away!
How did that happen?? So now I've got the heebie jeebies and will probably attempt a long run today

lurkingfromhome · 25/05/2015 08:44

I had a terrible run yesterday . Decided to do a nice easy 10K but chose a new route that was on an incline for the first half. It wasn't like scaling a vertical cliff face but it was enough to make it a struggle from the beginning and I ended up walking three times for about half a minute each time just to get up the last bit of hill. Oh aaargh. Came home feeling very disgruntled that that was supposed to be a nice easy tapering run and was just horrible. I really will have to go out again today and try to get my confidence back. Sad

Oh dear lurking, that doesn't sound fun. Don't worry, that's your bad run out of the way, it's all plain sailing from here! Take it easy today, we only have 6 days left!! Feeling quite relaxed, do has sorted transport to his satisfaction, the only thing left now is to figure out how to transport my breakfast as the hotel restaurant won't be open, and they probably wouldn't have anything gluten free anyway. Time to dig out the cool box and the ice packs I think!
Thursdaylast 4 weeks is loads of time, you will be fine! Though I think I would be a bit scared at the thought of a notorious race too! The weekend after Edinburgh I have a 5k - but it's the colour me rad so I don't think it will be too taxing! Messy, but not fast!

lurkingfromhome · 25/05/2015 14:58

Thanks emummy. I am just back from a gentle 7K that went much better. Still a bit aghast at the thought of running three times that in less than a week, mind you.

What time do you plan to get to Regent Rd on Sunday? I'm just going to get a taxi, I think. I had been planning to arrive around 7.30 but read some recommendation somewhere that you should get to a race at least 90 minutes before the start! Why???? To hang around and get cold/wet/nervous? Mind you, I am the champion of Cutting It A Bit Fine so probably not best placed to judge...

Was aiming for around 7:15 lurking so as to get to toilet, hand in baggage and allowing for transport disasters! Am getting the tram from Ingliston. I am the opposite to you, I am the queen of arriving far too early so will probably be there at 7 freezing!

phlebasconsidered · 26/05/2015 09:23

It's not the ten miler in Lincs is it, Thursday? I was going to enter it but bottled.
I am flatlining at 8.5 miles at the mo, just can't seem to get past it. I do have till October though!

ThursdayLast · 26/05/2015 11:06

No it's in Cornwall phleb at a place called Lanhydrock which is where I parkrun too. I bottled it last year Smile

holmessweetholmes · 28/05/2015 08:03

Urgh. This always bloody happens to me! 10 days before my race and I wake up with an absolute bastard of a sore throat. No doubt the cold will develop over the next few days and I'll have the hacking cough by race day Sad.

lurkingfromhome · 28/05/2015 14:54

Oh no holmes, that sounds rubbish. Any point in taking loads of First Defence to try to keep it at bay for the next 10 days? I have sometimes managed to postpone colds that way.

OP posts:
emummy · 29/05/2015 13:04

Dh unwell today, if he gives it to me 2 days before the hm thinks it may be grounds for divorce! Crossing fingers and toes!

holmessweetholmes · 29/05/2015 13:45

Oh no! Hope you avoid it emummy! Mine doesn't seem to be developing into much of a cold. Fingers crossed!

lurkingfromhome · 29/05/2015 17:53

First Defence, multivitamins and lots of anti-bac gel!! Stay well, emummy Smile

Right, we're off this morning. Dd2 has 2k race at 12:30, so want to get there for about 12. Good luck lurking!

lurkingfromhome · 30/05/2015 07:07

And to you too emummy - all the very best for a great race!
