Help with running stamina after a break

I am running the Manchester 10k in May, I will never be a 'runner' more of a plodder really!

I have managed to run 8k in 55 minutes, which I was pleased with although it was walk/run!

Well a couple of weeks ago I started with a bad cold and it had me laid up for 2 days, where I didnt move off the sofa! I still seem to be struggling now, tired and headachy.

The thing is I have started jogging again and it has all gone to pot, can only manage 1k without being out of breath and having to stop.

Help in building myself is greatly appreciated.

Maybe you're not 100% yet? Wait until you're feeling better just doing your normal day to day stuff, and then start back running. I think it takes at least 2 weeks before you lose your fitness. (I read that somewhere, I think)
When you're ready to start back, do a couch to 5k type run/walk but go with how you feel. So, longer run sections if it feels ok.
NB. I am more plodder than runner.

Sorry, I meant to say that it doesn't take as long to get back to your normal fitness as it did to reach that point in the first place. Feels really hard work at first but after a few sessions, it feels noticeably easier. I've had a few breaks for babies or injuries over the last few years and it's been the same every time. Good luck!
