Exercise at home (not DVDs!)

I really need to up my exercise levels but have limited opportunity for getting outside & really don't like traditional exercise DVDs (davina et al)

Considering a turbo trainer for my bike - do I just lug my normal possibly muddy road bike into my living room, get on & cycle? I can see me sticking a DVD on & just coasting along which is obviously better than being sat on the sofa but not a hard workout - any tips?

What other indoor options are there for cardio/strength training that don't require big expensive pieces of equipment?

I use a tabata timer and do tabata circuits when I'm away from home without DVDs. You can get them online or there are many choices of apps. Push-ups, burpees, high-knee jogging, jumping lunges, squat jumps, etc, all work well in tabata format. As does stationary cycling, actually.
