Happy New Year, everyone. If you've got a New Year resolution to do more exercise and think crazy Jillian may be the answer, come and sign in here for moral support, chat and a chance to moan.

Ripped in 30 L1 D2 done. Still hate cardio, but it felt like a good start to the year.

L1D9 done! I'm a bit nervous about L2!

Thanks all I might see if I can get some 3kg weights when I next get paid.

I need nice arms to wear a sleevelss wedding dress so that is my goal. But I do fear my arms may be aching for the next three months solid!

ElphabaTheGreen · 21/01/2015 18:39

Zowie. Military press with 2kg has me huffing, might get three or four reps in at 3kg, wouldn't even consider trying it with 5kg! Chwarae teg, blod!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 21/01/2015 20:28

Day off today to try to get my neck behaving. My baby is going through a good phase. He is 6 months and a cheerful little beastie. The ANST, on the other hand, is probably removing her nappy to wet the bed on purpose as I type. She makes up for Good Baby by being extra demonic. I dread Good Baby going bad - I reckon it will be like the bit at the end of The Incredibles when baby Jack Jack suddenly turns into a little fiery demon.

TorianaTollywobbles · 21/01/2015 20:59

Hi, have recently started the shred again after giving up after holiday last year. Up to L2 D3 but felt hard going today! Does anyone know approx how many calories a shred session burns off? Trying to work out food and calories. Thanks

ErrolTheDragon · 21/01/2015 21:34

Welcome, Toriana. TBH I reckon its probably best not to think about exercise in terms of calories burnt, as it's so easy to overestimate. Exercise is excellent of itself for building muscle, being fitter etc, the fact it burns some calories is a relatively small part of the reason why it's a good thing.

ShyGirlie · 21/01/2015 21:35

L2D2 done, still only on 1kg weights...

and doing a lot of my own version of the L2 moves as finding it quite tricky!

ImogenQuy · 22/01/2015 07:07

Yoga Meltdown L2 D10 done. Moving on to Yoga Inferno next week. I'm pondering whether to move on to Ripped L3 tomorrow or have one last go at nailing L2 and start L3 next week, tidily in parallel with the new yoga one. I think probably the latter. I hate feeling she's defeated me.

.

Zing, sorry you're leaving us, but I can't imagine fitting in exercise in your situation, so fair enough. See you around!

OP posts:
Sarahlouboo · 22/01/2015 07:22

Imogen - are you doing yoga and ripped every day or alternating? I did yoga inferno for the first time yesterday. I haven't done much yoga so I spent a lot of time in downward dog trying to see what she was doing upside down! I enjoyed it.

I am jumping about from dvd to dvd at the moment and I would like just to do one and stick with it for a bit!

Bye bye for now Zing Smile. Hope you'll come back when you are able.

Someone was asking about calories and shred? I put it down on MFP as 20 minutes circuit training general. I know it prob isn't very accurate but I guess it gives you a rough idea.

ImogenQuy · 22/01/2015 07:24

Alternating! I don't have time to do both even supposing I had the energy. I find I get less bored and fed up if I'm not doing the same thing every morning.

Tangoandcreditcards · 22/01/2015 08:30

L1D4 for me today. Was a REAL struggle today so did 1kg all the way - EVEN bicep curls. Feeling like a proper slacker compared to 5kg blod

DS (11mo) has had 2 of what I count as 'good nights' (still 5 night wakings, but stayed in his own bed and went back to sleep quickly each time). I feel like we're turning a corner. [JINXED IT]
Bleary-eyed high-five to those of you shredding half-awake with me.

Got to go and see the doc today and think they are going to tell me I need surgery, which is annoying for all sorts of reasons, not least because it'll mess with my shred!

ErrolTheDragon · 22/01/2015 09:01

tango - well done! IME D4 is the worst. Hope your DS starts to settle better soon and the GP isn't too bad.

InfinitySeven · 22/01/2015 10:02

Morning everyone!

Tango I hated D4 too. I hope your DS continues to sleep well!

I certainly did after yesterdays workouts. Managed a short walk, too. I've just completed Workout One for today, but it was a lot harder than yesterday. Tired legs = poor leg strength! Focused on engaging my abs. I've just realised how much taller I sit up when my abs are engaged, I'm usually such a sloucher...I hadn't even noticed!

Waiting to do Workout Two (and hopefully Three, if I have the energy), but DP is working from home today, and he's on a call. Damn him. I'm due at work in a bit, so I might just run out of time for all three.

Zing I don't blame you for feeling that something has to give. We'll welcome you back when you're ready :)

ElphabaTheGreen · 22/01/2015 13:54

30DS L3D5 done.

Right, those dodgy abs exercises. There was someone on the Jillian Webchat who thought the high impact moves had exacerbated her pre-existing back problem to the point that she ended up in hospital. I'd put money on it being one, some or all of these three moves!

Pike Crunches - Natalie is a case-study in bad form on this one, unfortunately. Every time her arms and legs go down, you can see daylight under her lower back. This should never happen in any abs moves, or you're asking for pain and injury. Beginner, intermediate, or advanced, please stick with Anita on this one - don't lower your legs all the way down to the ground. For a slight upgrade, you can add in the arms, but those abs must stay engaged (see Errol's video upthread) and the lower back should stay pinned to the floor.

Scissor Crunches - do not, under any circumstances, put your hands under your bum as they do in the video. It puts your pelvis in an unstable position and creates a greater pull on your lower back. Keep them down by your sides on the floor or, for more advanced, raised by your sides with your head and shoulders off the floor, as per the photo I have attached. Keep the abs flat and engaged and that lumbar spine pinned to the floor.

Sit Ups - Jillian asks at one point in the video 'why doesn't anyone do sit-ups anymore?' Because they're no more effective than ab crunches, Jillian, they can put a lot of undue strain on the neck and it's almost impossible to do them without 'popping' the rectus abdominus, thereby building this muscle incorrectly, as I've mentioned in some PPs. Poor old Natalie is an example of bad form again in this one in that you can see that rectus popping right up every time she does a sit up. The centre of her stomach from sternum to pubic bone underneath her belly button elevates, such that there are hollows either side of the muscle. This will never train your abs to sit flat and support your spine correctly. Furthermore, do not try sit ups with legs out straight the way Anita does them. The psoas muscle which attaches to the top of the femur crosses over the pelvis and joins onto the lumbar spine. With legs out straight, your lower back will be pulled off the floor. See pike crunches above for why this is a bad thing. Interestingly, Anita clearly has mighty core strength - I suspect she's done truckloads of Pilates as she looks like a dancer in a lot of the moves she does. Quite apart from the enviable appearance of her abs, she manages sit ups without popping, and her lower back never lets a chink of light through. If you have core stability like that, go ahead and do the exercises as given. But you probably don't, so either stick with ab crunches or keep your arms stretched out (as per the attached photo) and concentrate on not popping your abs while going through the full range of movement.

New Year, new Jillian - the January Shred thread is here!
ScienceRocks · 22/01/2015 16:19

Thanks elphaba. You have reinforced my belief that anita is much better than Natalie, despite doing the modified versions of the exercises! Natalie clearly cheats some of the time too - in level 1 of the shred, while jillian is showing something on anita, Natalie stops bending her legs and just does bicep curls for a few moves, for example. Anita doesn't wobble on exercises that's involve standing on one leg either, whereas Natalie often does, and she also gives jillian a look on the level 2 cool down when jillian turns her head the wrong way on the arm stretch!

I was pushed for time this morning so will do level 2 of the shred tonight. I was hoping yoga meltdown would have arrived by now, but alas, my order has got lost and now cancelled, so I have to reorder it.

DeliciousIrony · 22/01/2015 16:35

Hi all,

I am back with Jillian, after a three-weekish hiatus over Christmas. Had previously completed 30DS, and done 3 out of 4 weeks of Ripped.

I've now bought several others (for variety, and because I can't afford the gym at the moment): 6 week 6 pack, No More Trouble Zones, Banish Fat Boost Metabolism, Killer Buns and Thighs, and Extreme Shed and Shred. I've tried all except NMTZ so far, and have yet to work up to the higher levels of 6W6P and KBAT.

I'm basically just trying to do some form of Jillian at least 5 - 6 times per week. I've done both workouts of Extreme Shed back to back, it nearly killed me!

Today I did Banish Fat and 6 week 6 pack. Feel knackered but glad I did it - they are quite different workouts so didn't get bored. Banish Fat certainly gets a sweat on!

Has anyone been to see her live tour? I wanted to see her in my city a few nights ago but couldn't afford it.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 22/01/2015 16:56

About to do L1 D4 of 30DS

science - you can get the yoga one on YouTube.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 22/01/2015 17:06

Anyone know any good youtube Pilates sessions for beginners?

Tangoandcreditcards · 22/01/2015 17:18

Well just finished at the docs. The good news is (hoorah) that I don't need surgery. The bad news is that I've been jabbed like a pincushion and told no exercise for a week. So having cracked the D4 barrier (good luck with that squeezy ) I've now got to take a break and pretty much start again.

I'll see you on the Feb thread I guess! I'll be back to read this one though, because the knowledge shown by elphaba there is frankly astounding as is delicious 's devotion to JM. Keep it up ladies!

InkyPinkyPonkyPoo · 22/01/2015 19:08

Hello all! Sorry for introducing myself and then disappearing! I injured my back wrestling my apparently very strong 2 year old into the car and haven't been able to exercise for a week Shock I'm all healed now though so tomorrow I'll be starting over. I'm actually rather looking forward to it.

blodynmawr · 22/01/2015 20:04

30DS L2 D4 done.
Tango - I'm in my early 40s, DCs are 12 and 8, so there are no excuses for me making time first thing the morning to exercise! Hats off to all of you with babies and small DCs who are keeping fit! Smile
Most of my 30s, when my DCs were at their baby and toddler stages, passed in a total unfit sleep deprived blur, hence why I am addressing all that now! I was a very fit gym bunny during my 20s and now determined to make the time to re-gain the fitness, albeit now with creakier knees!

ScienceRocks · 22/01/2015 20:10

30ds l2 d3 done. Used my 2kg weights for nearly all of it - blod, I don't know how you do it with 5kgs! Found it hard today, maybe because it is evening (could feel the days food repeating on me Confused) but I do think days 3 and 4 are the hardest anyway. I'm going to try and shred again tomorrow so I can have the weekend off, but my diary is pretty full on for tomorrow so I may end up doing my fifth workout of the week on Saturday morning.

Off to shower now. I was quite looking forward to dinner before, but I do find the workouts reduce my appetite.

CheshirePanda · 22/01/2015 21:04

Hi all
I'm back...L2 D4 done. Feeling pleased to be here again. Thanks to Elpheba and Errol for all the useful info on technique. i dont feel so bad following Anita now :-)

wibblyjelly · 22/01/2015 21:16

Tango glad you don't need surgery Grin
L1d10 complete! Bit worried that tomorrow it will be like starting all over again with the pain, but will power through....

JustOneMoreGin · 22/01/2015 23:45

Evening all
L2 D2 done and I've also done day 3 of my 30 day squat challenge. Did loads of housework too so I definitely think I deserved that popcorn I scoffed this evening Grin

ZingTheGreat · 22/01/2015 23:59

Thanks for lovely posts and understanding.Smile
