Would you all like to join me here?

OP posts:
IKYTWTLYA · 06/01/2015 20:09

Just back from week 2 run 1, this time with friends, and it was much more enjoyable than last time by myself!

I've told anyone who'll listen that I'm doing it! I'm still amazed that I'm doing it at all!

Planning on signing up for a 5K in May. Might even start a just giving page to see if anyone wants to sponsor me to do it. Since I "can't run" and all!

cheapandcheerful · 06/01/2015 20:34

Just got back from my w1r2 and feel amazing! I thought that I would prefer morning runs but I might have just changed my mind!
It was about the same difficulty as last time but I definitely covered a greater distance in the time. Also I ended up doing more uphill running this time, whereas my first run I was mostly walking the uphills.

I have a question...are all of the runs the same in each week? So do all the week 1 runs consist of 60s running and 90s walking? And so on...

stilllearnin · 07/01/2015 07:15

Cheerful- if you're doing the nhs programme then most weeks are like that but about 3 have mixed runs - maybe somewhere around 5 or 6? So much of it is about building your confidence that you can do this

stilllearnin · 07/01/2015 07:17

Hence the repeated runs!

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 07/01/2015 17:03

Hello all, may I join?

I was a regular runner last year having graduated c25k but a combination of factors squashed it in Autumn and I've not been out since. I need to get back on the road but it's not an edifying thought. I'm thinking I need to kickstart with some c25k sessions and go from there, see how much mojo I've lost, so I'm here seeking motivation and inspiration.

Lagoonablue · 07/01/2015 22:22

W1r2 tonight. It rained. But felt good to go it! Another runner said hi as he passed! I feel like a vet!

ChuckNovice · 07/01/2015 22:47

Well done everyone just starting. I am really enjoying it. Except today I might add - week 8 r2 and I found today really hard, did week 8 r1 the other day and it was fine but had to stop and walk after 15 minutes today, then I just decided to have a go and run/walk the massive hill at Alexandra Palace (I barely ran, I thought I'd practice my hill running). Anyway I did eventually get into it and ended up doing 6 km including warm up/down but I did walk for a few minutes in between.

I hope next time I don't need to stop and walk so soon into it.

stilllearnin · 07/01/2015 22:54

Where are you going to restart cheesy? We chatted about this just up thread. I am going for a longer run tomorrow- hoping for 6-7k

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 08/01/2015 08:23

Hi stilllearnin, I was thinking wk4. I live in quite a hilly area so even though my running habit was quite established 4 months ago, 5 min intervals of running should let me know where I stand. I suspect the answer will be Back to wk1. Do not pass go. Do not collect £200

Lilliput · 08/01/2015 12:08

Week 1 complete. For some reason it was a bit tougher today. Saturday is the start of week 2 and so far so good.

KermitsGreen · 08/01/2015 19:10

Hi, Can I join? I'm in need of some encouragement. I did the C25K last year and it went well, though I'm terribly slow. I managed a ParkRun in August but took 38mins. Foolishly this year I've set 35mins as a target but seem to be running my usual 3km routes even slower. Is it the winter blues? Do we naturally run slower when it's cold? Or is it my lazy nature getting the better of me?!

stilllearnin · 08/01/2015 19:43

Squeezy that sounds like a good plan - thing is even if you go back to week 1, you could be up to w4 in a fortnight by doing just one run from each week if you see what I mean.

Kermits - my times are really inconsistent. I am thinking of altering my route which I wish I had done today. Instead I didn't go out at all knowing my normal route would be slippy from the rain - wish I'd just gone along some of the cycle paths nearby now and then back again in the lovely post-rain sun. Could a different route help...and just enjoy it!

cheapandcheerful · 08/01/2015 20:25

Urgh. I just completed w1r3 but had a stitch every time I ran because I went out too soon after dinner.

All you evening runners out there...what is the shortest amount of time you can comfortably leave between eating and running? I don't want to run before eating as we eat with dc before their bedtime.

IKYTWTLYA · 08/01/2015 20:36

Hello!

I haven't run today but I have done some P90X instead!

cheap I'm very new to this running thing but I have had half my tea before and then run about 20 mins later, and had the rest when I got back. Not sure if it's advisable though! I didn't have any adverse effects.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 08/01/2015 20:43

I have to run on an empty stomach. I find I can do 10k before I get any adverse effects. Well, I did when I was able to run that distance Hmm

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 08/01/2015 20:44

I need to leave at least 2hrs between a meal and a run.

KermitsGreen · 08/01/2015 20:47

Thanks stilllearnin. I probably should change my route but I'm constrained to running while the kids are doing something so my start and end point are fixed - it kills two birds with one stone and ensures that I do actually get out there and do it. Perhaps I'll try a new route at the weekend...

addictedtosugar · 08/01/2015 21:10

Cheerful About an hour for me, but I need to take it steady if I run that close to eating. 90 mins is better.

Kermit I run slower when its windy. The extra speed when the wind is behind me does not offset running into a headwind and the wind seems to change direction when I do so its always against me Also, (sorry, getting personal here) have you put on any weight over the winter? Someone I think once said every extra pound adds seconds to each km you run.

Still I have 3 routes from home. One I love, but is a fair weather, timed for when there aren't tooo many dog walkers out. The other two are weather and light dependant. Mixing things up definitely helps me.

cheapandcheerful · 09/01/2015 07:23

I have just woken up in agony Sad

I stretched after my run last night which seems to have done the trick for my legs , but my shoulders and the back of my neck are so stiff and painful. I can barely move!

Anyone else get this?

Lagoonablue · 09/01/2015 11:34

Week 1 run 3 done today. Felt hard but have done it.

Will start week 2 on Monday.

hellyd · 09/01/2015 11:47

determined to manage the whole c25k this year, only got as far as 3min runs last time but would love to do a charity run in memory of my mum this summer so do you all use the NHS podcasts or is there another better version I could download?

dizzyday07 · 09/01/2015 11:51

I am jumping back on this thread. I haven't been out running since about October but my BoxFit instructor has just started a 4 week Beginners Running class so I decided it will get me back out - especially as I have signed up for a 10k in May!!

It was just her and me and we did W1 (60sec run, 90 sec walk) but twice. So in effect 8 x 1min runs out and 8 x 1min runs back. It was pretty flat in most parts but there was a long incline in the middle - but that was nice to run down coming back!

I have promised her I shall run at least once more before next week where we will move on to W2. We covered @5k in total and I think we must have been going a bit faster than my normal plod as I couldn't get me breathing to keep in pace with my feet!

ChuckNovice · 09/01/2015 13:04

I did it! Just finished my last run and managed 6.2km (including warm up and down). Still found it really hard though and I can't believe I did it.

For all you new starters, back in November I could barely run 2 minutes let alone 30.

I'm gonna keep going to with 5km then do the 10 km programme soon.

Lagoonablue · 09/01/2015 14:14

I use the nhs app on my phone. I have my music on in background and the app interrupts when it is time to run/walk.

TheOriginalWinkly · 09/01/2015 17:50

Hi, can I join please? I used to be fit (ish) before I got pregnant with DD, then exhaustion, nausea and SPD put paid to that. She's 6 months now Shock and I need to lose 30 pounds to get into a healthy bmi bracket Blush plus I need to pass a fitness test when I go back to work...

NHS app downloaded. W1r1 tomorrow.
