Would you all like to join me here?

Lovely to see people starting to run! I am still slow as a snail but do actually enjoy it when I get out there and jog through the park. The seasons are soooo beautiful and at my pace I get to take it in on huge detail Smile

For anyone who is hesitating - give it a go and walk if you hate it. Once you are used to it and listening to your own music it is actually ok and the sense of achievement you get when you complete a section or get to the next tree is huge. I could barely make the first 60s when I first started and now can log 30mins! It's taken time but I am getting there - albeit very slowly!

Keeeep running.

MontserratCaballe · 03/01/2015 19:58

Loki, be very careful in the dark of you are wearing headphones. It's so important to be able to hear the traffic. You can buy hi vis sashes which illuminate you without Overheating. Worth a shot? X

SurlyCue · 03/01/2015 20:30

I am very sore this evening after just a tiny bit of running.(i also did squats yesterday though) How do people get back up and do it again being so sore? Also any tips to reduce the evening/ next day soreness?

addictedtosugar · 03/01/2015 21:31

I run with one earphone in, one earphone out, to try and hear whats going on, but also the music.

I'm currently running in long trousers and a long sleeved "technical" top - sports direct cheepie in fluorescent yellow. I doubled layered with a vest top the other day, and was roasting. I also wear a headband over my ears initially, as they do get cold, but usually end up with the wrapped round my wrist. I've seen several (blokes) out in shorts over Christmas Shock

Surly stretch afterwards is the only way I can get shot of the stiffness. Boy do I know about it is I forget. I don't do the ITB or lying down ones, but do do the others from here. I need to do the hamstring with toes flat and pointed.

SurlyCue · 03/01/2015 21:35

Thanks addicted!

ImBrian · 03/01/2015 22:36

Surly a hot bath normally sorts me out. I'm sore now off today as I did more then normal but I'm going to have two days off. Normally a day off between runs stops any aches.

SurlyCue · 03/01/2015 22:41

Thanks brain. Will do that too.

SurlyCue · 03/01/2015 23:03

sorry brian! Blush

cheapandcheerful · 04/01/2015 07:43

I did w1r1 this morning and found it very manageable.

It felt like it went on for ages though! Is it bad that I got a bit bored about halfway through?
I'm hoping that at some point I will start being able to turn my mind to other things while running, other than the run itself. When did others find they started doing this?

LokiBear · 04/01/2015 09:53

Thanks for the advice. I will only have one head phone in. I'm running residential streets too. I'm going this evening (before dark today) and I'm looking forward to it.

MontserratCaballe · 04/01/2015 11:34

Cheerful (can't address you as cheap!), well done on your first run. If it is very manageable, perhaps move on to week 2 - I found inability to breathe easily stopped me being bored! I also like nosying in people's houses as I jog past and I have made a music playlist which keeps me going. I also used to swim a lot which is the world's most boring sport....

I got caught up in a junior park run when I was out this morning. Those kids are fast! Or maybe I am just super slow! My podcast went a bit wrong and said I'd done 4.5 miles in 28 mins, which I clearly hadn't! Oops. I have downloaded a new one now to get me to 10k. Can't wait. I hope to get to go a bit faster in time, too. I had trouble overtaking walkers at points this morning.

Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeep running, everyone.

festivehopeandfrolicks · 04/01/2015 17:51

Hello there.I'd like to join in too please.I've been "doing" c25k since April.Had to start off walking and walking faster at first due to health and fitness issues.I'm now on week three but struggling a little after nasty Xmas cold and busy December.

chiefbrody · 05/01/2015 11:15

Complete newbie..................... Going for first walk/run tonight.

Any advice please.

Lilliput · 05/01/2015 13:06

Second 'run' done in the pushing rain this morning.
Big pat on the back please Smile

Lagoonablue · 05/01/2015 13:38

Hi can I join?

Did first run today. W1r1. It was ok. My headphones kept falling out though? Any suggestions? I like the app so still want to use it.

Will do next run on weds evening I think.

ImBrian · 05/01/2015 15:15

I wear a buff (like a hair band) to keep my ears warm and tuck my head phones in that.

Does anyone else ever get sore feet? I did park run on Saturday and ran further then I have done and my feet are aching a bit still.

Lagoonablue · 05/01/2015 18:41

I felt great after my run.....now my legs feel like lead. I will have a hot bath and hope I am not limping too much tomorrow!

samesizetoes · 05/01/2015 20:47

W1r1 here, I'm starting from scratch. I only got to w5 last time I attempted c25k until life got in the way and I kept finding excuses and next thing you know its 6 months later and you can't find your trainers. So I'm back at the beginning and feeling good after the first run.

I might have to sub one of my weekly runs for a 30 min swim for the first few weeks. I get bored of running all the time and want to mix up the exercise but x3 runs and a swim or two every week is a bit much after months of almost no physical activity and I don't want to be put off. So x2 runs and 1 swim is enough for now then I'll add more when I get into the swing of things.

funchum8am · 05/01/2015 20:58

Hi everyone, lots of newbies! I am home from having DS and so far struggling to remember pelvic floors but hoping to start c25k in a couple of weeks.

Advice from doing it successfully before - always rest a day or two between run days as it helps with soreness and teaches you good habits. Overdoing it leads to injury.

I used to get up early and run because I couldn't fit it around work and evening tiredness otherwise. I actually looked forward to runs as I got fitter and nearer the end so it wasn't as bad as I expected, even when I had to get up at 5:30am (also a teacher, Loki.)

Listen to audiobooks or podcasts to keep it interesting if music isn't your thing.

Feel smug -you're doing something fantastic!

addictedtosugar · 05/01/2015 21:53

Lagoon The reviews for sound quality are pretty atrocious, but these come with 3 different ear bud sizes so you can find one that fits a bit better.

The sound over my laboured breathing is OK to me.

Toes have you seen the swimfit series? They are a similar idea, but for swimming.

Welcome everyone! Apparently I burnt 50,000 cal last year running! Thats a lot of mars bars, so i dread to think what size I'd be without it.

Lagoonablue · 06/01/2015 06:27

Thanks

stilllearnin · 06/01/2015 06:45

Lagoon have you tried over ear headphones? You can get cheap ones from sports direct but they're not good quality. I think mine are Philips. Really comfy - I only have one in and i can hear it fine!

Brian perhaps your shoes are too small? I used to get sore toes and I didn't realise you're supposed to run in shoes at least a half size up. If its your arches you could try rolling a tennis ball under your feet?

Whatsthatnoise · 06/01/2015 11:41

Starting from scratch W1R1 done it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, think I got to about W5 last summer then dd was ill and everything went tits up Smile

monsterfaery · 06/01/2015 17:41

Just started this today, I was surprised at how comfortable I found the level as I haven't done any proper exercise for a long time, just the 40min twice a day round trip to school and back which does involve walking up and down 2 hills (we live on top of one hill, school is on top of the other). I'm finding hard to imagine myself being able to run 5k at the moment so I'm not mentioning to anyone in real life that I'm trying this until I see if I can really do it.

chiefbrody · 06/01/2015 18:33

I am with you monster, keeping it to myself until I can run at least up the road without stopping and choking.

My ds and I are doing it together and have found lots of fitness you tube clips that we can follow.

I do 15 mins he does 30 mins of you tube and we run together [him out in front me on my knees lol]]

But i am determined to run 5k by june for a charity run.
