Ds is 2.10, I bought him some armbands recently and he HATES them.

Could anyone recommend a good alternative?

Have a look for kids' sharks fins. My two learned to swim really quickly with them and they barely noticed they were there.

I really want to know this too! Those floaty ring things where they sit 'in' it and bob about are only for under 1s.

Depending on the swimming pool, DS2 likes a woggle.
I've seen kids with a fin

If were in the toddler pool, DS2 goes boynancy-less - he can touch the bottom the whole time, and we are right next to him - its not very relaxing for the parent. He's 3.2.

Would he wear a swim vest or arm disks rather than bands??

If you're relatively confident and he's relatively sensible (as much as any 2.10yr old) and if you are with him 1:1 then a noodle is brilliant for learning to swim.

Noodles and woggles I think are the same kinds.

Tippi is right! Its actually quite tricky for kids to learn to swim with arm bands as they hold their bodies upright in the water, rather than in a swimming position. Also older siblings put them around ankles and then lifeguards have to get wet.....
