Steady run, tempo run etc????

I've been looking over the 5-10k app thinking about starting. Theres a lot of talk about tempo runs, steady runs, jog, fast runs... What's the difference? I mean, I can run at a steady (slow!) pace but don't think I could go any distance any faster. Anyone done this? What do they all mean?!

According to Women's Running, steady is 7/10 effort, slightly faster then an easy pace but still comfortable, threshold is 8-8.5/10, able to give 3-4 word answers. Then there's your planned race pace. Not sure about tempo run. All very confusing isn't it!

A Tempo run is comfortably hard. Probably 8 out of 10.

You shouldn't be able to hold a conversation if you are running a tempo run.

Blimey! I just run... Slow but consistent!

I'm barely able to hold a conversation at my normal easy pace!!!
